Employment outlook 'not as bleak as some think'

The employment outlook in the UK is not as bad as many people believe, according to one sector expert.

A spokeswoman for Jobsite said that although there is rightful concern about the number of public sector roles that will be cut in the coming months, the number of job vacancies overall, including those in the sales recruitment sector, is on the rise.

Her comments follow the publication of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development's quarterly Employee Outlook survey, which showed that job satisfaction has experienced an increase across UK workplaces during the autumn

The representative stated: "There are more vacancies overall available now than 12 months previously so it's certainly not as bleak a picture as it could be. This increase in vacancies is across many industries and job roles so it's not just opportunities for a select few."

She added that people need to be on the lookout for roles which require people with valuable skills in the weeks ahead, as these present excellent opportunities for permanent employment if people are suitably qualified.

Employers 'must do more to develop staff skills'

More needs to be done by the UK's employers to boost staff skills, according to a new report.

A study published by the Learning and Skills Network and the Pearson Centre for Policy and Learning suggests that employers are not contributing enough to skills training in the UK and the government should do more to make them foot the bill.

The report, entitled Fair Shares: The Role of Employer Contributions to Skills Development, claims that while the government's new skills strategy "clearly demonstrates" how more money will be obtained from individuals for training in future, it fails to define how greater investment will be obtained from employers.

Raj Patel, director of research and policy at the Learning and Skills Network, said that past government policy has diminished the "critical role" employers can play in investing in skills.

"Whilst the coalition's new strategy seeks to shift the balance of responsibility away from the state, it needs to be clear about how business will contribute their fair share - or we risk a further decline in UK competitiveness," he explained.

It comes after Martin Hill at Dell Education Services recently said that developing the skills of staff should be a priority if businesses are to achieve growth in the coming months.

Companies 'must adopt new online strategies'

It is important for any company which has a web presence, including sales recruitment organisations, to change the way they think about the internet, one sector expert has commented.

Matt McAlister, director of digital strategy for the Guardian Media Group, said that the "exponential" growth of the web has left many firms behind and it is vital to keep up with developments in order to maintain a strong presence.

"This is the real challenge for anyone who has invested in making a killer website, that the growth is just so massive that you start to feel quite quickly that you are a very small planet in a [big] universe," he explained.

Companies which simply view their website as a publishing platform will find that this is often not enough to draw attention to the site.

Recently, Jason Falls, a consultant and blogger on socialmediaexplorer.com, recommended that sales employees use social media sites both internally and externally in order to boost a firm's credibility online and build relationships with customers.

Agency staff 'make a valuable contribution'

Contributions which temporary workers can make to an organisation should not be underestimated, according to one sector body.

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) has called on the government to recognise the skills which temporary workers can bring to organisations, including those in sales recruitment.

Tom Hadley, the REC's director of policy and professional services, said that agency work is a "core element" of most cost-effective resourcing strategies but is often regarded as an "unnecessary cost" which can easily be cut.

He explained: "The reality is that agency staff are often highly trained professionals providing specialised skills and making a huge contribution to frontline services."

However, Andy Dickson, head of global sales at Impact International, recently said that in the present economic climate it is vital companies measure the cost of taking on new staff, such as sales recruitment candidates, against the financial benefits they can provide during their time with the firm.

Three-quarters of workers 'motivated at work'

A new poll has revealed that a significant majority of UK staff, including those in the sales recruitment sector, feel motivated in their jobs.

The research was carried out by YouGov and commissioned by economic development company Opportunity Peterborough, and seen exclusively by the Recruiter.

According to the results of the poll, three-quarters of UK workers feel motivated to do their job on a Monday morning without assistance from managers, with 28 per cent of these feeling positively motivated and 44 per cent reluctant but ready.

Earlier this week, Phil Flaxton, chief executive of Work Wise UK, said that organisations in the sales recruitment sector and other industries should not adopt a "one size fits all" approach when tackling the subject of employee engagement.

As every employee is different, managers need to recognise which ones need more motivation than others and adopt a suitable strategy, the expert explained, noting that salesmen and technical workers have very different approaches to their jobs.

80% of workers 'want continuous development'

A new report has revealed that eight out of ten workers would like continuous development throughout their careers in order to boost their skill sets and maintain their employability.

The latest Randstad quarterly work monitor survey shows that staff, including those in sales recruitment, expect the training they receive to match their expectations.

According to the data, only 55 per cent feel that their firm is doing enough to help them keep developing, while six in ten workers would switch jobs if a new employer could help them to develop faster or better.

Graham Trevor, HR director of Randstad Staffing, said it is important for organisations to recognise the value that employees attach to learning and development.

"It is also important to ensure that training strategies are aligned with overall business goals by identifying the specific skills needed to deliver commercial objectives both now and in the future and judging what gaps may need to be overcome," he added.

Earlier this week, Jessica Pryce-Jones, chief executive of iOpener, said that managers should attempt to instil a sense of purpose in sales recruitment employees if they wish to engage them.

Manufacturing sector 'will fill the growth gap'

A new report has revealed that the country's manufacturing industry is poised to fill the growth gap and respond to the prime minister's calls to boost job creation, including sales recruitment roles.

That is the verdict of a new report by EEF, the manufacturers' organisation, which shows says that David Cameron's calls for the industry to "create and innovate; invest and grow" can be met by the sector.

Commenting, EEF chief executive Terry Scuoler said: "Manufacturing is well-placed to fill the growth gap as the public sector plays a smaller role in our economy and make the investments in innovation and skills that will drive our economy forward and create new jobs."

Peter Russell, head of manufacturing sector at RBS Corporate and Institutional Banking, which helped to compile the report, added that manufacturing continues to make a "significant contribution" to the UK economy and is well situated to play an even greater role in a sustained economic recovery.

Last week, the quarterly Labour Market Outlook by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and KPMG indicated that the net positive balance in the manufacturing industry is predicted to rise to 51 between October 1st and December 31st, boosting recruitment opportunities in the industry.

Apprenticeships 'build bridges into employment'

Apprenticeships can help sales recruitment candidates and other jobseekers to "build bridges" into the world of work, according to one industry body.

Tom Hadley, director of policy and professional services at the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), said that apprenticeships and other routes into work such as internships and temporary assignments are vital if the country is to avoid a "lost generation" of workers.

"Lack of experience is a major barrier for young people entering a competitive jobs market. Apprenticeships provide a means of developing the skills and demonstrating the attitude to progress up the jobs ladder," he explained.

He added that the business community has a "pivotal role" to play in helping to create pathways into the world of work, while the apprenticeships "push" may also provide new business opportunities for recruiters.

Earlier this year, the REC's Youth Employment Taskforce published its Avoiding a Lost Generation report, which included practical recommendations on boosting the skills of young jobseekers such as gaining experience though apprenticeships.

Sales managers 'should instil a sense of purpose'

Managers should attempt to instil a sense of purpose in sales recruitment employees if they wish to engage them, one expert has pointed out.

Jessica Pryce-Jones, chief executive of iOpener, said that it is often not enough to expect that staff will stay motivated unless they are given a reason to maintain that sense of purpose.

Her comments follow the publication of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development's HR Outlook report, which showed that employee engagement is the number one priority for private sector HR professionals over the next year.

Ms Pryce-Jones suggested letting staff know that they have "choice" in their daily routines by encouraging them to write lists highlighting their intentions, as this will spell out how they can improve and what they can do for a company.

"Making a difference - purpose - seems to be the missing piece. What's quite difficult for lots of people to think about is how they make a difference, but if you really push people, they can give you an answer," she explained.

Unemployment 'will stabilise or decrease'

A rise in UK unemployment is very unlikely in the next 12 months, according to an expert, with an increase in recruitment far more likely in 2011.

That is the opinion of Phil Flaxton, chief executive of Work Wise UK, who said that unemployment levels are likely to stabilise or go down, because there is still a skills shortage in the UK.

It comes after statistics published by the Office for National Statistics revealed that the employment rate for those aged from 16 to 64 for the three months to September 2010 was 70.8 per cent, a rise on the previous quarter.

Despite fears over public and sector job cuts in the coming months, Mr Flaxton pointed to a recent letter signed and published by 35 of the top employers in the UK stating that any fallout from the public sector could be absorbed by the private sector, including sectors such as sales recruitment.

He explained: "This could take up the slack and find jobs for those people. I don't think we are going to see a dramatic rise in unemployment."

The Apprentice candidates get their figures wrong in Week 7

This week's episode of The Apprentice saw the candidates forget Rule 101 of sales - to get your figures right.

The challenges was to sell a "blue screen experience" – that is giving customers the chance to play around in front of screen showing activities such as skiing and motor racing and then selling them the DVD of their performance.

However, the losing team was undone by spending too much on marketing materials and not successfully working out how many DVDs they would need for the day – overbuying by 100 per cent.

In the boardroom, team leader Sandeesh attempted to lay the blame on Liz for failing to cost up effectively, but as Liz had not been officially designated the role, the responsibility fell on Sandeesh for not following the basics of sales jobs and she was fired by Lord Sugar.

Last week, motivational speaker and seminar leader Gavin Ingham observed that fired Apprentice candidate Alex Epstein had made a sales faux pas during his task as team leader by failing to conduct a successful brainstorming sessions and run his team well.

Developing staff skills 'should be a priority'

Developing the skills of staff should be a priority, particularly in the IT sector, if businesses are to achieve growth in the coming months, one expert has asserted.

Martin Hill at Dell Education Services made the remarks after an Everest Group report for the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) showed that outsourcing in the UK's IT sector could increase by a massive 600 per cent over the next ten years.

However, Mr Hill said that firms should be looking at how they can nurture and develop the skill sets of existing employees to avoid having to outsource work, and bringing in staff who can boost productivity.

"Developing the IT skills of existing staff across the workforce improves their ability to maximise the potential of existing technology to increase business performance, reduces the pressure on under-resourced IT departments and boosts morale," he noted.

It comes after the FDM Group claimed that there is set to be a rise in the number of graduates being employed in IT sales recruitment roles and other positions in the information technology sector in the coming months.

Unemployment falls again, figures show

The latest figures have revealed that UK unemployment fell once more in the three months to September.

Data from Office for National Statistics shows that the numbers in work rose by 167,000 over the quarter, while the number of people classed as unemployed fell by 9,000.

In addition, the proportion claiming Jobseeker's Allowance decreased by 3,700 on the month, meaning that the number of people in employment has risen by nearly 300,000 over the last year.

Welcoming the figures, employment minister Chris Grayling said it is good news for people in all sectors, which includes sales recruitment.

He explained: "The private sector is leading the way and creating jobs and opportunities for people across the country. Today's figures show that businesses are responding well and we will continue to help them expand and develop, as the economy grows."

It comes after the latest quarterly Labour Market Outlook by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and KPMG indicated that the net positive balance in the manufacturing industry is predicted to rise to 51 between October 1st and December 31st.

Jobseekers call for disregard of social media profiles

A new report has revealed that most jobseekers in the sales recruitment sector and other industries would prefer employers not to judge them based on their social media profiles.

According to the research, carried out by MyJobGroup in conjunction with the Efficiency and Productivity Research Unit at the University of Leicester, candidates feel that social media profiles do not provide an accurate reflection of their abilities.

The poll found that 37 per cent of respondents "strongly agree" that employers should not judge candidates by their social media footprint, with only 4.8 per cent strongly disagreeing.

It also revealed that 31 per cent of hopefuls would consider taking further action if they were declined for an interview or job due to their social media profile.

However, at the recent Recruitment and Employment Confederation national convention, experts noted that more organisations are already using social media when looking to take on new staff, and such innovations will only become more important to sales recruitment agencies in the coming years.

Sales managers 'need to understand technology'

It is vital that sales managers get a firm grasp of technology if they are to drive growth in the coming months, a new report has suggested.

Research carried out by GIS software provider ESRI UK found that almost three in four of employers think the ideal future sales manager needs an equal understanding of both business and technology if they are to thrive in the sales recruitment sector and other industries.

The research also showed 90 per cent of HR leaders look for critical thinking skills in interviewees during the recruitment process, while 88 per cent believe that location is essential when they are on the lookout for skilled staff.

Recent data published by Antal showed that there has been an increase in sales recruitment from 54 per cent of respondents at the beginning of the year to 57 per cent.

The firm's chief executive Tony Goodwin said there is a high level of demand for professionals and managers as companies and nations emerge from the global economic downturn.

Manufacturing recruitment prospects 'looking good'

Recruitment opportunities in the manufacturing sector are strong in the fourth quarter of the year, according to the latest report.

The latest quarterly Labour Market Outlook by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and KPMG indicates that the net positive balance in the manufacturing industry is predicted to rise to 51 between October 1st and December 31st.

In addition, private sector consultancy services will rise to a positive balance of 44, while finance, insurance and real estate will reach the same figure.

Dr John Philpott, chief economic adviser at the CIPD, commented: "What remains to be seen is how much of this good news is merely a pre-festive season surge in private sector jobs or evidence of a sustained improvement that will continue to offset large scale public sector job cuts."

Meanwhile, a recent poll conducted by Poolia also found that there is expected to be an increase in the number of new staff being taken on by companies in the financial and accounting sectors in the coming months, including sales recruitment candidates.

More IT graduates set for employment

There is set to be a rise in the number of graduates being employed in IT sales recruitment roles and other positions in the information technology sector, a new report has suggested.

The FDM Group claimed that it will double its intake of IT graduates in 2011 as demand increases and the industry begins to stabilise following the economic downturn.

Sheila Flavell, FDM's chief operating officer, said it is important to continue persuading graduates that they can play a significant part in the IT sector.

"There is a bigger demand than ever for IT professionals and there will never be a shortage of jobs in the sector due to the increasingly important role it plays in society," she said.

A recent City Lifeline survey showed that, despite some fears over a double-dip recession, overall spend in the IT sector will rise in 2011 in line with previous years as companies look to establish a firm footing in the market, with 86 per cent of IT managers set to continue spending next year.

Sales recruitment consultants 'beginning to return'

There has been a rise in the number of sales recruitment consultants who previously left the profession looking to return, it has been claimed.

Richard Draper, managing director of Rees Draper Wright, told the Financial Times that many people left the industry but found that the pay was lower in other sectors and the jobs were not necessarily more stable, so many are now looking to return.

According to Phil Sheridan, UK managing director at Robert Half, many consultants remained in the sector, however, as they felt valued and challenged and were therefore less likely to pursue other career opportunities.

"Good candidates will always find a home and the consulting sector is as attractive now as it has ever been. It is an interesting time," he told the news provider.

It comes after Andy Dickson, head of global sales at Impact International, recently said that in the present economic climate it is vital that companies measure the cost of taking on new staff, such as sales recruitment candidates, against the financial benefits they can provide.

Recruitment return on investment 'should be monitored'

The return on investment which hiring new staff can provide should be monitored, according to one sector expert.

In the present economic climate, it is vital that companies measure the cost of taking on new staff, such as sales recruitment candidates, against the financial benefits they can provide, claimed Andy Dickson, head of global sales at Impact International.

He said that many firms will be narrowing their search for new employees by altering their recruitment processes and ensuring only the very best candidates are invited for interviews.

Mr Dickson noted: "These can all be turned into metrics that are useful when negotiating with senior stakeholders in organisations. This is about evaluating talent management in a clear statement of what it means to the organisation."

According to research from consultancy Barclay Meade, part of Matchtech Group, top talent is what many companies rate as the most important element when using a sales recruitment agency, with 61 per cent of organisations holding this opinion.

Recruitment 'will rise' in next two months

The number of people being recruited into both temporary and permanent job positions is rising sharply in the October to December period, a new industry report has indicated.

According to the Labour Market Outlook Survey, conducted jointly by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and KPMG, the number of new staff being taken on in the sales recruitment sector and other industries rose sharply in October and this will continue until the end of the year.

Dr John Philpott, chief economic adviser at the CIPD, said that signs of "sustained and increasing buoyancy" in private sector job prospects is encouraging, particularly as some other labour market indicators have been "subdued" recently.

Alan Downey, head of public sector at KPMG, added: "For the moment at least, the planned retrenchment in the public sector is likely to be more than offset by the growth plans of private sector employers, particularly in the manufacturing and IT sectors."

Last week, David Kern, economic advisor at the British Chambers of Commerce, said that he feels the government's austerity measures are "a tall order" but will help the country on its way to full economic recovery.

And now for something Completely Different...

Poetry normally leaves me cold but I love history and for some reason I enjoy reading about the American Civil War. Here’s a poem that was in a book that I must admit I skimmed through rather than read recently. For some reason it jumped out from the page and struck a chord with me. I promise that I won’t post things like this too often but I hope you enjoy it. The poem was found on a body of an unknown Confederate soldier that was killed at the battle of Gettysburg.

I asked for strength that I might achieve;
I was made weak that I might learn humbly to obey.

I asked for health that I might do greater things;
I was given infirmity that I might do better things.

I asked for riches that I might be happy;
I was given poverty that I might be wise.

I asked for power that I might have the praise of men;
I was given weakness that I might feel the need of God.

I asked for all things that I might enjoy life;
I was given life that I might enjoy all things.

I got nothing that I had asked for;
But everything I had hoped for.

Almost despite myself my unspoken prayers were answered;
I am, among all men, most richly blessed.

My Afternoon With A MoonWalker

I was lucky enough to see Charlie Duke at the recent ISMM Successful Selling show just before the October half term break. You may not of heard of Charles Moss Duke Junior but he was the tenth man on the moon (and he actually admitted himself that on no occasion EVER has anyone on a plane said “hey you’re the guy that flew to the moon aren’t you!”). In addition he was pretty integral to the Apollo missions to the moon. Not only an astronaut he was also the “voice of Houston” (the man who spoke on the first lunar landing “the Eagle has landed” and he was also the guy in Apollo 13 operating all of the simulators back on earth that helped ensure Jim Lovell (the Tom Hanks character), Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon), and Fred Haise returned safely.

It was a spine tingling hour presentation and here’s some of the perhaps lesser known stuff that I found BRILLIANT!

1. Charlie Duke has just upgraded his blackberry and it has 8GB of memory, pretty standard on today’s smartphones. This is 100,000 times more memory than was in the onboard computer in the command module during the Apollo missions!

2. From Kennedy’s ‘Moon Goal’ speech, the one that went “We’ll place a man on the moon and return him safely before the decade is out” to actually achieving it was just 8 years and 2 months. This was one unbelievably bold and “Definite, specific goal” which Charlie Duke, like most others, felt was wildly unachievable. (This is quite rightly cited as probably the ultimate example of good goal setting practise - setting a goal, stating an end date to achieve the goal, putting measures in place to know you were on the right path and keeping it on record!) To put into some historical context the boldness of this speech the US Space programme In 1961 had really just started. In May 1961 NASA was still testing chimpanzee ‘manned’ flights in Project Mercury and had only just successfully sent Alan Shepherd into sub-orbital space. However just 8 years and 2 months later we’d safely landed a man on the moon and safely returned them to earth. As Charlie Duke stated if they tried today it would now take 8 years and 2 months to draw up the proposal to gain approval let alone pass through the Health and Safety risk assessment!

3. NASA gave each Astronaut $25 each day that they were away from their main base for expenses but deducted ‘board and lodging’ or meal costs. He was away for 11 days and the expense slip said “Journey: Houston – Moon – Pacific – Houston”! So his claim was for $275 minus the meal and lodging costs of $261.25. So he earned a total of $13.75 in expenses for going to the moon. Unsurprisingly he never cashed the cheque which now hangs in a frame on his wall. Priceless!

4. During the first lunar landing mission Houston lost radio contact for over 15 seconds with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin shooting across the face of the moon in the landing module. This was at a critical phase of the modules landing procedure as it flew horizontally and parallel with the moon’s surface before turning upright, turning off the engine and gently settling into the moon dust. They had calculated that there was a pile of boulders in their path so had to take evasive action. This took up valuable fuel which was already burning at a rate faster than expected. For 15 seconds the world feared that the module had run out of fuel, had shut down power or indeed had crashed on the lunar surface. The world gasped a heavy breath. 15 seconds passed and when radio contact was re-established Duke as the ‘Voice of Houston’ famously exclaimed “"Roger, Twank... Tranquility, we copy you on the ground. You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue. We're breathing again. Thanks a lot!"

It was a brilliant afternoon with a real-life ‘moon walker’ who was extremely humble, intelligent, articulate and engaging. As they’d say back home in his native Texas “What a Guy!”.

At the event he also gave a five minute interview to the BBC - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-11656790

Alex makes a sales faux pas in Week 6 of The Apprentice

This week's episode of The Apprentice highlights how not to approach brainstorming sessions and run sales teams.

In Week 6, the two teams were tasked with creating a new cleaning product and marketing it - something which proved to be a stumbling block for team leader Alex, whose inability to generate decent ideas led to him getting the axe, motivational speaker and seminar leader Gavin Ingham observed.

He noted that Alex's failure to know the market, exemplified by him having a child advertise a product which was dangerous to youngsters, was an unforgivable faux pas in the eyes of the industry professionals they pitched to and, ultimately, Lord Sugar himself.

"Know your market and your clients. If cleaning stuff is dangerous for your kids and your target market has kids then you need to understand that they don't want adverts encouraging their kids to play with dangerous fluids," Mr Ingham said.

In the end, Alex's inability to motivate his sales team and oversights in branding and marketing the product led to him falling on his sword and being fired by Lord Sugar.

Finance and accounting sectors 'predicting rising revenues'

The majority of organisations in the finance and accounting sectors are predicting increased revenues in the coming months, according to a new industry report.

A poll conducted by Poolia also found that there is expected to be an increase in the number of new staff being taken on by companies in this sector in the coming months, including sales recruitment candidates.

The survey showed that 57 per cent of firms predict revenue growth in 2011, while 40 per cent expect an increase in projects in the new year and over 30 per cent anticipate growth in headcount.

According to London Business School professor Lynda Gratton, speaking at the launch of phase two of the Future of Work plan recently, there will be many changes in the type of skills that will be needed by recruiters in the coming months.

She predicted that sales recruitment organisations and other recruiters will increasingly be looking for candidates with a "deep" skill set in the months and years ahead.

Delivering top talent 'a sales recruitment essential'

The ability to deliver the very best talent is essential, according to a new poll of companies using sales recruitment agencies.

According to research from consultancy Barclay Meade, part of Matchtech Group, top talent is what most companies rate as the most important element when using a sales recruitment agency.

The survey found that 61 per cent wanted recruiters to have the ability to deliver the right candidates, with six in ten requiring all-round good quality candidates and 55 per cent wanting the agency to demonstrate a knowledge of the market in which they operate in.

Furthermore, 53 per cent wanted the agency to be cost effective and to demonstrate client understanding, while 43 per cent sought excellent customer service.

A recent statement by the Association of Executive Recruiters, a group within the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, noted that the Comprehensive Spending Review "underlined" the need for fundamental reform in the way that staff are recruited and which candidates are chosen.

UK 'will recover steadily' from recession

The UK's recovery from the global economic downturn will be slow but steady, one sector expert has predicted.

David Kern, economic advisor at the British Chambers of Commerce, said that he feels the government's austerity measures are "a tall order" but will help the country on its way to full economic recovery.

It follows a report from PricewaterhouseCoopers which estimated that UK public and private debt is projected to top £10 trillion by 2015.

Mr Kern said he "broadly aggress" with the figures, but noted that the country will be in a better position than ever, despite the losses incurred as a result of the recession.

"I think we are going to come to a place where we can achieve steady growth, but from a lower base. I think that it will take about four or five years," he added.

It comes after Stephen Overell, associate director of the Work Foundation, pointed out that growth is returning to the retail sector and this will eventually lead to staff, including those in sales recruitment positions, receiving pay rises.

Staff engagement 'must occur at a local level'

Staff in the sales recruitment sector must be engaged at a local level if companies and the employees themselves are to truly benefit.

That is the opinion of Kate Brown, HR director for organisational effectiveness at global insurance firm RSA, who told delegates at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) conference that the sector faces a "massive challenge".

According to the specialist, the key for many firms in the coming months will be to build an emotional attachment through engagement - something which may prove difficult in the insurance sector.

She noted: "I believe you can't have group-wide engagement strategies. It has to be locally owned. The issues people have in China or Columbia are very different to those in the UK or Ireland."

The recent HR Outlook, published by the CIPD, found that 41 per cent of HR professionals rate employee engagement as one of the top three priorities for the year ahead, while 38 per cent opted for performance management and reward.

Wage rises 'may take a while'

It may be a while before the UK sees wages rise again and pay freezes thaw, particularly in the retail sector, according to one sector expert.

Stephen Overell, associate director of the Work Foundation, said it is fairly likely to be a long-term trend as although the recession is over and growth is returning, it may take a while for this to "feed through" into pay packets.

However, companies will also be "wary" about losing people from having extended pay freezes, so there is still the chance that some based in the retail sales recruitment field will boost staff pay in order to appear more benevolent, the expert suggested.

Mr Overell added: "The risk is always that someone will move onto a better job, so they will be nervous about maintaining it [for] too long."

His comments follow the publication of research by the British Retail Consortium, which suggested that next year's increase in the national minimum wage must be no more than 1.7 per cent to help retailers continue their vital job-creating capacity.

Aaron Wallis have a dedicated retail sales team filling sales vacancies across a wide spectrum of the retail industry. Offering a 12 month rebate scheme, Aaron Wallis provide a retail recruitment service that is second to none.

Right to flexible working to include all staff by April 2012

The date by which legislation extending the right to request flexible working to all staff is likely to be implemented has been revealed in a new business plan published by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).

In the paper, which has been published as part of the government's transparency agenda, the BIS outlines the planned dates for key regulatory actions.

It suggests that the right to request flexible working could be implemented for all by April 2012, with the government planning to analyse responses to the consultation on extending flexible leave rights to all and create a plan regarding this and shared parental leave.

"We want to bring about a power shift, taking power away from Whitehall and putting it into the hands of people and communities, and a horizon shift, making the decisions that will equip Britain for long term success," the statement said.

It comes after Alistair Tebbit, spokesman for the Institute of Directors, said that the regulations that are stifling the country's firms, which include sales recruitment organisations, need to be cut in order to promote growth.

Finding the right talent 'is crucial for reform'

The recent Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR) has "underlined" the need for fundamental reform in the way that staff are recruited and which candidates are chosen, it has been claimed.

According to the Association of Executive Recruiters (AER), a group within the Recruitment and Employment Confederation there is a "huge leadership challenge" facing all organisations, including those in the sales recruitment field.

Commenting on how executive search firms can help in the process, Derek Smart, chair of the AER said finding the right talent to drive the transformation agenda has to be one of the "immediate" post-CSR priorities.

"New ideas and approaches will be required. As well as harnessing untapped pockets of expertise and innovation within current structures, bodies will need to find ways of attracting new talent to work," he explained.

Recently, Richard Nott, website director at CWJobs.co.uk, said that there is a chance that public sector cuts as a result of the CSR will lead to more talented and skilled workers moving to the private sector, which includes sales recruitment roles.

REC aims to drive AWR awareness

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) is aiming to drive awareness of the Agency Worker Regulations (AWR) with a series of events.

In two half-day workshops in London and Leeds this week, the REC is aiming to help members learn more about the impact the new rules will have on their business and enable them to inform clients about how they will change the ways agency workers are assigned.

Commenting on the initiative, Lorraine Laryea, REC solicitor and commercial advisor, said the workshops are intended to complement legal documents, client briefings and impact assessments handed out before the implementation of the AWR.

"The whole purpose is to fully brief members on the legal implications of the regulations and explain some of the more complex provisions so that they and their clients are fully equipped to deal with them," she added.

Scheduled to come into force on October 1st next year, the AWR initiative will impact on all members of the recruitment industry, including those in sales recruitment.

CV tips 'will guarantee an interview'

There are some simple CV hints and tips which candidates for sales recruitment positions and other roles can follow to ensure they get an interview, one sector expert has recommended.

Recruitment professional Chimene Felton told the Shropshire Star that the competitive jobs market means there is little margin for error in the recruitment process so it is essential that CVs are professional and tailored towards the job being applied for.

She explained that the biggest mistake many people make is to fail to proofread and therefore miss errors with spelling and punctuation - something that can lead to their CV being disregarded instantly.

Ms Felton also advised hopefuls to be serious when adding email addresses, as ones with humorous names are unlikely to be found funny by recruiters.

Finally, she advised people to ensure that their covering letter or email matches the tone of the CV and comes across as being professional, as this is likely to impress potential employers immediately.

Recently, Kirsten Hines, writing for Helium.com, said that confidence is the key for sales recruitment candidates, as this will be conveyed during the interview and be viewed positively by recruiters.

REC welcomes drive to enhance recruitment industry

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) has welcomed the government's drive to improve enforcement in its sector in spite of budget cuts.

According to the group, recent tribunals helping to ban agencies with poor standards will help to boost the sales recruitment sector and other aspects of the recruitment industry in the long term.

Lewina Farrell, the REC's head of professional services, said she "fully supports" the drive, adding that agencies which fail to maintain high standards reflect badly on the sector as a whole.

"As well as driving our own standards agenda though the Industry Code of Practice and the work of the IRP, the REC is committed to working closely with government inspectorates to address examples of bad practices," she added.

It comes after a survey of worldwide employers by Antal showed that the number of people being hired across all sectors, including sales recruitment, is on the rise globally.

Public sector cuts 'may have a silver lining'

The public sector cuts set to be made as a result of the government's Comprehensive Spending Review may actually have a silver lining, one sector expert has claimed.

Richard Nott, website director at CWJobs.co.uk, said that there is a chance that the cuts will result in more talented and skilled workers moving to the private sector, which includes sales recruitment roles.

He explained that, in the IT sector in particular, it will help to boost the sector by promoting competition and bringing the most accomplished candidates to the fore.

"That's a good thing for private sector companies, because they are going to get people that are highly skilled, that have worked on very large IT projects a lot of the time, and so they can really utilise those people," he explained.

The expert said that people who are subject to public sector cuts can still prosper if the "attack" the private sector jobs market.

Majority of workers 'like their employer'

The majority of workers in the UK, including those in sales recruitment positions, like the company they work for, according to a new survey.

A study carried out by Reabur, which measured worker happiness in all aspects of their job, found that 73 per cent of individuals have a positive opinion of the organisation they work for.

However, 93 of cent of those polled claimed that they would like to be paid more for the job they do, despite 61 per cent of this figure wrongly estimating their worth when based on job title, qualifications and years of experience.

Kirsty Burgess, co-founder of Reabur, commented: "I think we would all like a little extra money each month, but the fact that respondents believe they are worth an extra £5,000 each year shows that some are out of touch with the market rate for their role."

According London Business School professor Lynda Gratton, speaking at the launch of phase two of the Future of Work plan recently, sales recruitment organisations and other recruiters will increasingly be looking for candidates with a "deep" skill set in the months and years ahead.

Sales candidates 'must display value'

Candidates in the sales recruitment sector, or any industry, need to showcase the fact that they can provide value, it has been claimed.

According to Jacqueline Davies, head of talent, performance and resourcing at Barclays Global Retail, the same applies for recruiters themselves, who need to search for talent which can "deliver at every level", Recruiter reported.

Speaking at the Human Resources Forum in London, Ms Davies pointed out that instead of thinking of talent solely in terms of individuals, companies need to consider how they can create a talented organisation.

"To withstand volatility, we need to build talented organisations and talented individuals," Recruiter reports her as saying.

IT sales jobs 'have north-south divide'

There is a clear north-south divide when it comes to IT sales recruitment jobs and other roles within the sector, the latest report has suggested.

According to a study conducted by CV Screen, the average salary for somebody in an IT job in London and the south-east is 20 per cent higher than those in the north.

The data suggests that IT professionals in London receive 14 per cent more than the UK average and those in the south-east earn 10.1 per cent more.

Matthew Iveson, managing director of the organisation, said that online recruitment has played a key role in shaping the sector and migration of candidates.

"The growth of online recruitment has also made it much easier for candidates to find local employment and with many technology companies choosing to base themselves out of London, there has definitely been a shift in the market," he explained.

Recently, a City Lifeline survey showed that spending on creating new IT sales recruitment jobs and other aspects of the information technology sector will continue to rise in the coming months.

Recruiters 'looking for deep skill sets'

Sales recruitment organisations and other recruiters will increasingly be looking for candidates with a "deep" skill set in the months and years ahead, one expert has suggested.

According London Business School professor Lynda Gratton, speaking at the launch of phase two of the Future of Work plan, there will be many changes in the type of skills that will be needed by 2020.

She noted that recruiters will no longer search for people with a general set of skills, but instead look for those who have developed skills which can be utilised to help drive growth.

Some of the findings from phase one of the research showed that increasingly transient employees will have these "deep" skills which will become more transferable in future employment.

At the launch of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation's Recruitment Industry Trends Survey 2009/10 recently, experts predicted that recruiters will have to search for opportunities in a challenging financial environment as the economy eases through "a fairly slow, protracted recovery".

Staff appointments rise again in October

The UK continued to see a rise in the number of people being hired in sales recruitment positions and other jobs, according to industry figures.

Data issued by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG as part of their October Report on Jobs shows that there were rises in both permanent staff placements and temporary and contract staff billings last month.

The data showed that appointments rose at their slowest rate for 14 months, however, which highlights that the private sector still has work to do, said Kevin Green, the REC's chief executive.

"The Report on Jobs for October shows that the UK jobs market is still growing. However, the role of job creation now rests solely with the private sector and the government must do all it can to facilitate this process," he explained.

Last week, research carried out by Badenoch & Clark found that 44 per cent of workers in public sector jobs feel that they would not have to re-train for a role with a private enterprise and would be confident about switching sectors if required.

Job postings rise in UK

The number of job postings for sales recruitment positions and other occupations rose in the third quarter of the year, according to the latest statistics.

Figures from MyJobGroup.co.uk indicate that the UK saw an average increase of 17 per cent in job postings from the second quarter of 2010 to the third, with Greater Manchester witnessing the largest rise at 34 per cent.

Lee Fayer, managing director of MyJobGroup.co.uk, said that despite the increased uncertainty for almost half a million public sector workers, the recruitment sector should take encouragement from the results.

"Although there is likely to be an increased worry about the jobs market, it's still promising to see a strong performance from cities in the Midlands, especially as the rate of job expansion outperforms the capital's growth by a notable amount," he added.

It comes after Reed's latest Jobs Index, which analyses online job boards to track the number of opportunities in sales recruitment and other sectors, rose three points last month to 107.

IT spending 'will continue to rise'

Spending on creating new sales recruitment jobs and other aspects of the information technology sector will continue to rise in the coming months, the latest report has indicated.

Despite some fears over a double-dip recession, overall spend in the IT sector will rise in line with previous years as companies look to establish a firm footing in the market, a City Lifeline survey shows.

The poll, conducted at this year's IP Expo, shows that 86 per cent of IT managers will continue spending next year, despite the government's recent Comprehensive Spending Review.

Roger Keenan, managing director at City Lifeline, commented: "It's really encouraging to witness a positive outlook on the subject of IT spend for 2011. Many of the IT managers we spoke to realise the value of investing to ensure their organisations remain competitive."

Recently, global analyst Gartner said that the current IT sector, which encompasses sales recruitment, will only thrive if managers and workers are moving towards the same clear goals.

Demand for jobs hits 10-month high

The demand for jobs is at its highest level for ten months, according to the latest report, raising hopes of a boost in the private sector in the wake of public sector job cuts.

Reed's latest Jobs Index, which analyses online job boards to track the number of opportunities in sales recruitment and other sectors, as well as the salaries on offer, rose three points last month to 107.

This is higher than the previous 2010 best of 105, set in February, with strongest demand for new jobs coming from employers in manufacturing and marketing, according to Reed.

Martin Warnes, managing director of the organisation, said the autumn witnessed "strong growth" in the jobs market, with demand also up in sectors such as banking, financial services and tourism.

"Although salaries continue to slip downwards as applicant levels reach record highs, the threat of an imminent economic double-dip certainly seems to be receding which is great news for jobseekers," he explained.

Meanwhile, according to the results of Aon Hewitt's 2010-2011 European Salary Increase Survey, the UK average salary is expected to rise by 2.5 per cent in 2010 and 2.7 per cent in 2011.

Global sales recruitment 'on the rise'

The number of people being hired across all sectors, including sales recruitment, is on the rise globally, a new report has revealed.

According to the latest survey of worldwide employers by Antal, recruitment is up from 54 per cent of respondents at the beginning of the year to 57 per cent.

In addition, the percentage of organisations intending to hire in the coming three-month period is up from 55 per cent to 57 per cent.

Antal's chief executive Tony Goodwin said there is a high level of demand for professionals and managers as companies and nations emerge from the global economic downturn.

He noted: "For chief executives and HR directors around the globe, the key business challenge is already shifting away from headcount reduction or containment to how to source the talent they will need in improving markets."

At the recent launch of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation's Recruitment Industry Trends Survey 2009/10, experts predicted that recruiters will have to search for opportunities in a challenging financial environment as the economy eases through "a fairly slow, protracted recovery".

Small manufacturers 'expect production to grow'

Small manufacturing companies in the UK are planning to increase production in the next three months, which could create opportunities for those in sales recruitment.

Research published by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) showed that 31 per cent of small manufacturers think output will grow in the coming months, compared to the 12 per cent which expect a fall.

The resultant balance of 19 per cent in favour of production growth is an improvement on the 12 per cent which anticipated production growth three months ago.

In addition, the survey discovered that small manufacturers have increased their headcounts in the last three months, with a positive balance of seven per cent saying they have taken on new workers.

Russel Griggs, chairman of the CBI's small and medium-sized enterprise council, commented: "It is encouraging that firms have increased their headcount this quarter and are now planning to invest in plant and machinery, and innovation."

Last month, manufacturers' organisation EEF published a ten-point plan to help the UK develop a sustainable and balanced economy, which included greater investment in the country's productive capacity.

Recruitment agencies 'should embrace social media'

Sales recruitment agencies should start to make greater use of social media and other technologies, experts have suggested.

At the recent Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) national convention, industry commentators noted that more organisations are already using social media and the internet when looking to take on new staff.

Futurologist Dr James Bellini also predicted that such innovations will become more important to sales recruitment agencies and other employment organisations in the coming years.

Steve Hyde, chair of REC's marketing, media and creative industries sector group, added: "Using technology in the recruitment process is a reality and a change that we should pro-actively embrace. The world around us is evolving, as an industry we need to adapt."

However, he also reminded recruitment agencies not to neglect traditional face-to-face meetings, as these are often the most effective way of building trust between them and their clients.

Last month, the REC showed that the UK's recruitment industry achieved sales of just under £20 billion in the year to March 2010, despite enduring the economic downturn.
