Retail sales in Britain 'witness sharp rise in October'

There has been a strong rise in retail sales recorded across the UK over the past 12 months, with more good news expected in the near future.

Figures released by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) as part of its monthly Distributive Trades Survey underlined that the country's sales volumes have witnessed a substantial boost.

In fact, 47 per cent of retailers surveyed reported that their sales volumes were higher in October 2012 when compared to the same time last year.

Meanwhile, just 17 per cent of companies in the retail industry admitted that their sales had fallen during the last 12 months.

The resulting +30 per cent balance is much better than the +15 per cent forecast that had been given for retail sales, as well as the being the fastest rate of sales growth since June.

Anna Leach, head of economic analysis at the CBI, commented: "It is great news that last month's sales growth has continued into October, at a much faster pace than expected, and that this momentum is expected to continue next month too."

Aaron Wallis have a dedicated retail sales team filling sales positions across a wide spectrum of the retail industry. Offering a 12 month rebate scheme, Aaron Wallis provide a retail recruitment service that is second to none.

Apple iPad Mini launch date revealed

Apple has revealed full details of the new iPad Mini, including the fact that the gadget will launch in the UK at the end of the week.

November 2nd is the official launch date of the device on British shores, with Apple boss Tim Cook stating that it is "not just a shrunken down iPad" but "an entirely new design".

One of the main selling points about the iPad Mini is its nimble design. The gadget is just 7.2mm in width – "as thin as a pencil", according to Phil Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide marketing at Apple.

Meanwhile, the fact that the device is just 0.68lbs enables it to be half the weight of a standard iPad.

However, this weight and size shredding does not compromise on quality. The iPad Mini has a screen size of 7.9 inches on the diagonal, while presenting resolution of 1024 x 768 to enable all existing iPad software is compatible.

More sustainable jobs 'will enhance confidence in the workplace'

The drop in unemployment rates across the UK has been welcomed, though the government has been urged to try and establish more sustainable jobs.

Phil Flaxton, from Work Wise UK, believes that any decrease in unemployment figures has to be met with a positive attitude, especially when the British economy is still sluggish.

The statistics Mr Flaxton was referring to came courtesy of the Office for National Statistics, which revealed that the employment rate for those aged 16 to 64 in the UK between June and August 2012 stood at 71.3 per cent. This is up by 0.5 per cent on the figure recorded from March to May this year.

However, he pointed out that part of the reason for this good news is that there has also been a rise in the number of people securing part-time jobs where they are often low-paid.

Mr Flaxton elaborated: "Any reduction in unemployment has got to be good but when you scratch beneath that, we've got to just make sure that we're creating jobs that are sustainable where people can have confidence that they are going to be with a particular employer for a number of years."

Government urged to 'help make green jobs more appealing'

The government has been encouraged to play their part in order to make the route into green jobs a more attractive venture.

A spokeswoman for the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) pointed out that there is a major concern that such a career move could leave many Brits out of pocket before they can realise their dream.

For example, she acknowledged that a person could be required to fork out between £5,000 and £8,000 to undertake a six-week course that enables them to up-skill to become a domestic green engineer.

In order to solve the problem, the CAT spokeswoman advises the government to forge new partnerships with trade unions, employers and regional development agencies.

These business deals would work to allow all parties to better understand the skills and resources required to create a zero carbon economy.

"Furthermore, strategy must be matched with planning - there is no point announcing ten new offshore wind turbines if we haven't got the supply chain working and the people to build the turbines," the spokeswoman added.

Emerging economies 'to have some of the largest retail markets by 2022'

A quartet of emerging economies are set to join established countries US and Japan for boasting the largest retail markets across the globe.

This is according to a new report compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit, which suggested that the retail industries of China, India, Russia and Brazil will all grow considerably in size between now and 2022.

In fact, the organisation's Retail 2022 report suggests that China's retail market will be larger than any other country's within the next ten years.

Forecasts predict that the Chinese retail market will be worth $8.3 trillion (£5.16 trillion) by 2022 – twice that of the equivalent industry in the US ($4.5 trillion).

Rounding out the top three will be India, which is set to be worth almost $4 trillion – almost equal in size to the entire retail industry of Western Europe.

If estimates are correct, following the big three retail markets will be Japan ($1.6 trillion), Russia ($1.5 trillion) and Brazil ($1.2 trillion).

Jon Copestake, chief retail analyst at the Economist Intelligence Unit and the author of Retail 2022, commented: "The opportunities for retail over the next decade and beyond are enormous. But where the future markets will reside and the way in which we will buy goods will change dramatically."

Britain's back-office firms 'optimistic for the future'

The optimism of back-office support service firms in the UK has delivered more hope that the country's economy is heading in the right direction.

Such businesses are seen to act as a barometer for corporate Britain, with a study by accountancy firm KPMG detailing their expectations for the months ahead.

According to the research, 59 per cent of bosses in the outsourcing industry questioned stated that they believe that the pace of customer demand will only increase between now and April 2013.

Furthermore, a third of the respondents commented that where new contracts are agreed, profitability is improving. This is an increase from 20 per cent of bosses who thought the same only a year ago.

Another positive sign for corporate Britain was seen in Experian's Late Payment Index, which underlined that businesses, on average, paid their bills almost 1.3 days earlier in the third quarter of 2012 when compared to the same period last year.

Experian's Max Firth commented: "The gap between payment performance of the biggest and smallest businesses has continued to close."

Private sector's approach to hiring 'a mini miracle'

The resilience that is being recorded in the private sector of the UK in regards to employment has been called 'a mini miracle'.

Such a comment was made by Katja Hall, chief policy director of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), following the release of Seeking a Competitive Edge, the latest CBI/Harvey Nash employment trends survey.

In the report, which analysed 300 companies, where around 1.4 million people are employed in the UK, the main message that emerged is that the country's private sector is creating jobs.

This is highlighted by the fact that 35 per cent of businesses expect their workforce to expand over the next 12 months. In contrast, just 15 per cent of firms believe they will have less staff members by this time next year – creating a balance of +20 per cent in this area.

Ms Hall commented: "Businesses look set to continue with the positive but cautious approach to hiring that we've seen over the past couple of years, and this is echoed in expected pay restraint designed to protect employment."

Fuel duty cut 'could create thousands of new jobs'

New research has suggested that a rise in the UK's fuel duty will be counterproductive and that the economy will actually benefit more if the tax received a cut.

The National Institute for Economic and Social Research (NIESR) has argued against the planned fuel duty rise of 3p a litre in January.

It believes that the increase will cause up to 35,000 jobs to be lost and economic growth to be cut by 0.1 per cent. Furthermore, the group pointed out that these effects will bring in just over half of the expected extra tax revenue of £1.5 billion.

However, the NIESR's report went on to suggest that by cutting fuel duty by 3p a litre in the new year, 70,000 new jobs will be created across the UK.

What's more, economic growth would be boosted by 0.2 per cent if this option was pursued.

Quentin Willson, the national spokesman at FairFuelUK, which will present the NIESR's report to Treasury officials tomorrow (October 30th), stated: "We've proved our argument with robust financial research and modelling that shows if you raise duty you destroy jobs and damage growth.

"We appreciate the government's aspiration to reduce the deficit but know that hiking fuel duty up by 3p in January will only make things much worse."

How to get ahead in a new job

People who are just starting a new sales job have been given a number of tips that should enable them to get ahead in the workplace.

Business-to-business sales expert Jill Konrath wrote on her blog that the first piece of advice is to seek out someone who is a little ahead in seniority and look at what they are doing well.

Ms Konrath also believes it is very useful to set up a business book club, as this will enable people to learn new skills, while socialising with other members of staff.

Communicating with existing customers is also recommended, as this will allow new employees to work out what is going well at a company and factors that need improvement from an outside source.

For this point, Ms Konrath noted: "Learn about their roles & responsibilities, how they're evaluated, what their key priorities are and how their processes work."

Sales people should not be afraid to ask for assistance from their colleagues either, as new starters are not expected to know everything right from day one.

Discover the power of the phone by taking the 28 Partner Call test

Sales people have been encouraged to take the 28 Partner Call test to rediscover how important making phone calls is to their jobs.

Lori Richardson, previously voted one of the 'Top 25 Sales Influencers for 2012', explained that the first part of the challenge is to assemble a post-it weekly planner.

Next, list down 28 strategic partners who can help a sales person tap into multiple business opportunities – the figure refers to the number of lines on the piece of a ruled sheet of A4 paper.

This list can be ranked however an employee chooses, though phone numbers for each client should either be noted on the right side of the list or in a CRM system.

After this has been completed, it is up to the sales person to call each partner on the list to tap into opportunities – at least five calls per day is advised.

Details of each conversation should be written up on post-it notes, which can then be placed on the aforementioned weekly planner.

At the end of the 28 Partner Call experiment, sales people are likely to have tapped into lots of information and areas of knowledge for their business, which they can then use to help a company excel.

Password still the most commonly used online pass code

People in sales jobs have been urged to change their chosen passwords when surfing the web, so to reduce the risk of compromising their company's security.

SplashData has listed the Worst Passwords of 2012, having analysed user codes that were revealed during high-profile hacks of Yahoo, LinkedIn, eHarmony, and Last.fm.

The top three in the list remained unchanged, with password the most commonly used pass code followed by 123456 and 12345678.

However, all of these phrases do not present much security, as they do not take too long to figure out. The same applies for abc123 and qwerty, which ranked fourth and fifth in the list, respectively.

Morgan Slain, chief executive of SplashData, commented: "We're hoping that with more publicity about how risky it is to use weak passwords, more people will start taking simple steps to protect themselves by using stronger passwords and using different passwords for different websites."

Trade unions 'must alter their laws to reflect change in the workplace'

The rise in popularity of flexible working strategies around office spaces in the UK means that union laws must change and adapt.

Neil Carberry, the director of employment and skills at the Confederation of British Industry, gave this view when queried in a BBC Wake Up to Money podcast about what parts of the trade union laws are now outdated.

He explained that one of the main points to note about the current workplace compared to those seen a few decades ago are that they present a much less hierarchical structure and include a lot of people who carry out their jobs remotely.

"So lots of people have individualised flexible working arrangements these days [and this] means that people are looking for different deals from their employer whereas 30 years ago, if you think of the classic picture of industrial relations, all employees had roughly the same deal from their employer," Mr Carberry noted.

As a result of this, trade union laws need to be altered to reflect the shift in employment relationships, instead of only businesses themselves adapting to change.

Retail search volumes witness growth in Q3 2012

Retail search volumes have witnessed a boost across the board in the third quarter of 2012, when compared to the same period last year.

According to statistics obtained by the British Retail Consortium (BRC), total retail search volumes between July and September of this year were up eight per cent when put in comparison to the rate recorded during the third quarter of 2011.

The research has also highlighted the positive impact that more advanced forms of mobile devices is having on the retail industry.

For one, the BRC found that total mobile searches from tablet devices jumped from 40 per cent in the second quarter of 2012 to 42 per cent in the most recent quarter.

The capabilities of mobile devices today has also been linked to the fact that total search volumes from overseas customers have increased by 33 per cent in the third quarter of 2012 compared to quarter three of last year.

Peter Fitzgerald, retail director at Google, noted: "Interestingly, tablet penetration is largely driving mobile query growth. Sundays and bank holidays continue to be big days, with the August Bank Holiday seeing a peak in search queries across devices and mobile traffic significantly increasing on Sundays."

Gartner looks at next year's top strategic technology trends

Well-known research firm Gartner has listed down what it believes will be the top ten strategic technology trends for 2013.

According to the organisation, mobile device battles are set to be the most important trend in the next year. This is backed up by research suggesting that mobile gadgets will leapfrog PCs to become the most common tool for people to access the internet during the next 12 months.

Gartner placed mobile applications and HTML 5 as its second most influential strategic trend of 2013, which stems from the fact that the HTML 5 program is becoming more capable in its operations.

Next on the list was the impact of personal cloud, with apps, content and preferences all starting to operate with assistance from this innovative digital sphere, followed by the concept of the 'internet of things'.

This latter point is seen by the fact that more than 15 billion 'things' are currently operating over the web, along with more than 50 billion of intermittent connections.

Rounding out the list was Hybrid IT and cloud computing, strategic big data, actionable analytics, mainstream in-memory computing, the emergence of integrated ecosystems and the growth of enterprise app stores.

Many female workers 'do not aspire to reach board level'

A new survey has revealed that many female members of staff have no inspiration to work their way up a career ladder to the point that they reach board level.

The finding could throw a spanner in the works of the European Commission's plans to fine companies if they fail to reserve at least 40 per cent of their non-executive board seats for women.

According to a survey carried out by Allen & Overy and obtained by Telegraph Wonder Women though, only four per cent of female employees have an ambition to one day join the top table of their workplace.

Furthermore, just 37 per cent of the 547 female workers polled stated that they would like to become a manager sometime during their career. In fact, 17 per cent of respondents would feel content remaining in assistant jobs for the duration of their working life.

As a result of the research, Stefan Martin, employment lawyer at Allen & Overy, commented: "To redress the balance of women on board and in senior positions, targets – whether voluntary or mandatory – are only half the story.

"These need to be accompanied by education and mentoring programmes that start in school and continue in the workplace."

Companies urged to 'enhance community relations to realise many benefits'

Companies, whether there are large organisations or categorised in the small and medium enterprise band, have been encouraged to become more engaged in their local community.

John Minhinick, president of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, pointed out that research has already shown that members of the public are more willing to get involved with a firm that has plenty of engagement in their surrounding community.

On top of this, engaging with a local community can help a company to improve the morale of their staff members and provide a boost to staff training strategies.

These pointers were backed up in a report compiled by Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, which also reveals that 70 per cent of small and medium-sized businesses believe they have become more attractive to potential customers by being more engaged in community relations.

In order to tap into this area, Mr Minhinick noted: "It's very much on a local basis really. What local activities are on? What can local communities and local Rotary clubs get together on?"

The highlights of the Successful Selling 2012 event

The Successful Selling 2012 event has been praised for allowing a number of experienced names in the sales business to deliver important tips to a wide number of people.

According to The Sales Pro, five-time New York Times/Wall Street Journal bestselling author Larry Winget was one of the highlights of the show at Coventry's Ricoh Arena.

Described by the website as being "wonderfully provocative and humorous" throughout his keynote speech, Mr Winget advised the audience of the keys to being successful in a variety of professions.

"Want to know the 'secret ' of customer care? Be nice!" he explained. "Want to know the 'secret' of selling? Ask (again and again if necessary. And if that doesn't work, go see somebody else!). Want to know the 'secret ' of leadership? Get out in front of people – give them something to follow!"

Mr Body Language Allan Pease was also praised for being able to blend entertainment with top learning to captivate those in attendance of his keynote speech.

One of his underlining points was to urge job candidates to get their body language right in the first four minutes of an interview, otherwise they heighten their risk of jeopardising success before a meeting has been allowed to develop.

Tips to ensure a CV stands out from the rest

Job hunters have been encouraged to set out a resume in a way which will have potential employers thinking "here is someone who knows his way around. He knows what we need and he's prepared to give it to us".

This is the opinion of David Jensen, the founder of CareerTrax and managing director of Kincannon & Reed Global Executive Search, who underlined that attention to detail and good judgement are both vital for enabling a CV to shine.

In order to produce a standout document, Mr Jensen believes that the look of a resume is very important. As such, place contact details in a plain, readable font at the top of the first page and then follow this up with a summary statement.

This synopsis should outline in a couple of simple sentences why a job candidate feels that they are suitable for the role they are applying for.

Examples of work experience or education that are directly linked to the open position should also be a main focus of the CV, as these are the aspects that potential employers will be looking for.

Regional Growth Fund 'could secure 37k jobs in north east England'

A significant number of jobs in the north east of England are set to be created or protected with the aid of the government's Regional Growth Fund (RGF).

The Journal reports that the strategy will help to create 29 projects, which aim to pull in around £170 million from the fund, as well as £907 million of private sector cash.

What this looks set to reflect on the north east of England's recruitment scene is that an estimated 37,000 jobs in the region will either be protected or created.

Business minister Michael Fallon commented: "The north east turns out to be one of the big winners from the fund. They have a much higher total value of bids selected proportionately against the size of the region."

The north east local enterprise partnership is especially set to benefit from the RGF strategy.

According to the news source, the organisation has been allocated £30 million in order to enhance its planned £100m infrastructure fund. This aims to create more than 2,300 new jobs over the next decade.

Fall in youth unemployment 'very encouraging'

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has welcomed the latest official labour market figures, especially where youth employment is concerned.

Neil Carberry, the director for employment and skills at the CBI, believes that the data from the Office for National Statistics highlights that "businesses are still creating jobs" despite having to steer through tough economic times.

According to the figures, 212,000 more people found employment in the three months to August, while unemployment in the UK dropped by 50,000 during the same period.

On top of this, the number of young people employed across the country increased by 51,000 and youth unemployment dropped below one million for the first time in 12 months.

Mr Carberry acknowledged: "It is particularly encouraging that youth unemployment has started to fall, which suggests that job prospects for young people are picking up."

However, the CBI director stressed that the country cannot get ahead of itself as more than two and a half million citizens are still out of work and that "progress on unemployment will require sustained economic growth".

British retail sales figures 'relatively encouraging'

The imminent arrival of the chilly winter months and the start of a new school year have resulted in retail sales rising significantly in September.

Data released by the Office for National Statistics today (October 18th) revealed that more demand has been recorded across the board in this industry.

For example, sales volumes including automotive fuel increased by 0.6 per cent from August to September, while clothing and footwear sales rose by two per cent over the same month.

When looking over the entire third quarter of 2012, which ran from July to September, retail sales were up by one per cent when compared to the previous three months.

Annalisa Piazza, an economist at Newedge Strategy, believes that the latest Office for National Statistics report "is relatively encouraging" for the retail industry.

She is also hopeful for the economy in the months ahead, commenting: "Some strength in business confidence - for example - might convince the Monetary Policy Committee that no action is needed for now."

UK employment level hits record high

The level of employment in the UK has reached its highest figure since records began on the subject more than 40 years ago.

New data released by the Office for National Statistics highlighted that the country's employment level hit 29.59 million between June and August 2012.

Not only is this figure an increase of 212,000 people from the figures posted by the government agency between March and May, but it is also the highest since the first analysis was conducted in January-March 1971.

Looking further into the statistics, the number of full-time workers across the UK has jumped by 88,000 over the quarter to reach 21.45 million.

Meanwhile, part-time employment is now set at 8.13 million – an increase of 125,000 individuals when compared to the period between March and May of this year.

Minister for Employment Mark Hoban commented: "Despite the tough economic times, the private sector continues to create jobs and our welfare reforms are encouraging people to return to work - with 170,000 fewer people on the main out-of-work benefits than in May 2010."

People who love their jobs 'will achieve more success'

People who are planning out their career paths have been encouraged to seek out jobs which will not only earn them a decent living, but will be a joy to undertake as well.

This is according to Piya Khanna, executive coach at Change to Succeed, who believes that people who love their job will be more likely to invest more time in their work.

On top of this, an enhanced level of attention will be paid by those who enjoy going to work and they will also display more energy than an employee who is in a job simply to pay their bills and make a living.

To put this into context, Ms Khanna acknowledged that Steve Jobs and Bill Gates achieved great things in the corporate world because they loved the roles they were in. The same can be said about David Beckham and Jonny Wilkinson when it comes to successful sports stars.

"If you're not sure of what your passion is, some steps you can take to discover your passion include getting a career coach or life coach to help you with this and also reading books on the subject," the executive coach went on to state.

Google Nexus 7 becomes best-selling Android tablet

The Google Nexus 7 tablet computer has become the best-selling Android tablet ever, despite only being on sale for three months.

Carphone Warehouse reports that the first venture into the tablet device market for the search engine giant has been a roaring success.

Launched on July 27th, the Google Nexus 7 has already sold more units than gadgets such as the Asus Transformer Prime and the Samsung Galaxy.

Graham Stapleton, chief commercial officer at Carphone Warehouse, commented: "Looking at the sales of the Google Nexus tablet, it's clear that there is a massive demand amongst our customer base for smaller tablets.

"We're seeing a real shift in what customers are using their tablets for, with more and more watching content on the go."

Other standout features of the Google Nexus 7 tablet include the fact that it offers a crisp 1280-by-800 high-resolution display, while a scratch resistant Corning glass surface ensures the device remains like new for months to come.

The gadget's battery is also designed to last the distance, presenting users with more than nine hours of HD video playback, ten hours of web browsing or e-reading and a maximum of 300 hours of stand-by time.

Flexible working 'is much more than working from home'

Business leaders have been told to remember the fact that working from home is only one ingredient of flexible working procedures.

Dave Coplin, director of Envisioning at Microsoft UK, pointed out that the ability to work anywhere is exactly that – employers giving their employees the opportunity to carry out their job commitments wherever they please.

As such, this does not necessarily mean setting up an office at home but could involve being able to fulfil duties at a customer site or from the location of a company's suppliers.

To underline this point, Mr Coplin acknowledged: "For employers it is about having the confidence in their employees and for most employers it is about having the culture that measures on output rather than process."

He added that when done right, flexible working "works really great" for all parties involved.

However, Mr Coplin stated that failures in this strategy often stem from a personal issue between employer and employee – a problem that both parties have to work to overcome.

Scotland's job market posts strongest figures for several months

More people secured permanent and temporary posts in Scotland during September when put in comparison to the previous month, a new survey of recruitment agencies highlighted.

According to the latest Bank of Scotland Report on Jobs, placements have grown at their highest rate for several months throughout September.

Recruiters in Edinburgh reported the strongest rise in permanent placements during the month across Scotland, with consultancies around Dundee posting the fastest rise in temporary billings.

Agencies studied for the latest Bank of Scotland report believe that the improvement in Scotland's jobs market can be linked to greater client demand across the country.

Other significant findings of the research include permanents salaries in Scotland falling marginally in September, which were eased by a strong rise in hourly temporary pay rates.

Donald MacRae, the chief economist at the Bank of Scotland, was keen to add: "The Scottish economy is maintaining employment in the face of the global slowdown.

"A significant fall in unemployment awaits a lift in both consumer and business confidence."

Amazon launches first backlit Kindle in the UK

Amazon's first backlit Kindle device has launched in the UK, while the well-known online retailer has also revealed a new strategy for renting digital books.

The Amazon Kindle Paperwhite is designed with a manually-adjusted backlight, making it the first device in the range that can still be functional in the dark.

Designed with touchscreen capabilities, the device will also present a higher definition than its predecessors for added comfort on the eyes.

The Kindle Paperwhite will retail for £109 on October 25th, though customers can preorder their gadget from today.

Meanwhile, the Lending Library programme provides Kindle owners with the opportunity to expand their literary knowledge.

This is because the strategy will allow users to borrow one book per month from a selection of 200,000 titles and read them for free on a Kindle.

Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon and its chief executive, said: "We're already seeing the programme's success in the US for both readers and authors - customers are reading more and authors are reaching a whole new audience while making money in a new way."

Three big sales management mistakes to avoid

Business managers have been told of three major sales management mistakes that they should always look to avoid committing.

Urmas Purde, the co-founder of Pipedrive, believes that there are three errors that can prove substantial stumbling blocks for organisations of any size.

Mr Purde, who has more than ten years of sales and sales training experience, wrote on the Pipedrive blog that not keeping track can create serious problems.

"Without tracking things like the number of calls you make, and how many you need to make to close a sale, you won't be able to repeat your successes or avoid failures," he pointed out.

Holding lots of sales meetings should also be avoided, as every minute a sales rep is inside a boardroom means that they are failing to do their job and make their company money.

Calling on a sales team to work towards unrealistic metrics is another major mistake, with Mr Purde instead encouraging management to keep on reviewing goals that can be reached with a bit of effort.

iPad Mini 'to be revealed next week'

A new variation of the popular Apple iPad, deemed the iPad Mini, is expected to launch in the UK next week.

Rumours are circulating that Apple is preparing to release the new gadget as early as October 17th, as a direct competitor for Google's Nexus 7 and Amazon's Kindle Fire.

Both of these examples are seven-inch tablets – making them much more convenient for mobile use than the 9.7-inch standard Apple iPad – which also have lower price tags.

However, the iPad Mini is expected to be designed with a 7.85-inch display, on top of coming complete with a lower resolution screen.

Industry sources cited by The Guardian also claim that the device will connect to the internet solely by Wi-Fi.

The reason for this is that not needing to rely on 3G or 4G connectivity can keep the cost of developing the iPad Mini down and bring it in line with the price of a Nexus 7 or Kindle Fire tablet.

A diverse workforce 'gives companies a professional advantage'

Establishing a more diverse workforce can help to give business managers "a professional advantage" over their rivals.

This is the view of Tab Ahmad, founder and managing director at EmployAbility, who was also keen to stress that disabled people can substantially enhance the value of an organisation.

She acknowledged that 33 per cent of people are currently disabled or know somebody who has a disability, which can include a person's fellow employees, their customers, business competitors and partners.

Therefore, making more of an effort to create a diverse workplace will enable employers to tap into the widest pool of talent available.

Ms Ahmad also pointed out: "Disabled graduates often have more life experience, for example, overcoming obstacles, which leads to really good problem-solving skills, compared to their non-disabled peers."

The business expert underlined her message of creating a more diverse workforce by stating that an ageing population is likely to result in an increase in skilled workers with disabilities.

Flexible working 'is good for employers and employees alike'

Flexible working can provide benefits to both employers and employees, with plenty of options to choose from where this employment method is concerned.

Fintan O'Toole, chairman of Croydon Chamber of Commerce and director of its HR department, pointed out that many people see flexible working as an opportunity to do a job from home.

However, the employment specialist pointed out: "It could be reduced hours, it could be part-time, it could be working from home, and it could be working at unusual hours."

When it comes to benefits, Mr O'Toole was keen to stress that flexible working is a two-way street that can have advantages for both employers and employees to enjoy.

One of the main benefits for employees is that they can enjoy work without worrying about the expense of travel, while the employer will gain a wider workforce without needing to expand their office space.

Hilary Jeanes, a leadership coach and HR consultant with PurpleLine Consulting, has also been full of praise for flexible working recently, believing that the strategy encourages employees to do their jobs more effectively.

Outsourcing 'has many benefits if done correctly'

Outsourcing has been described as an opportunity for employers to gain "immediate access to more skills and better technology".

This is the message delivered by Martyn Hart, chairman of the National Outsourcing Association, who also praised the strategy as being the best chance to grow during the tough economic climate without taking too much of a risk.

"Provided it is done correctly, with careful due diligence and sufficient effort put into managing the relationship, outsourcing can boost productivity, drive efficiency, enable access to new markets and improve a small businesses' overall prospects," Mr Hart commented.

Furthermore, the business specialist pointed out that the majority of small businesses have already taken advantage of outsourcing to sort out accounts, cleaning and payroll.

However, Mr Hart underlined that any type of company "can successfully outsource absolutely anything" if they take the time to study the procedure.

John Ellis, managing director at Nexus, recently backed up these comments, by stating that outsourcing can provide firms with a cost-effective and time-efficient business function.

Those in sales jobs 'can no longer ignore social media'

Sales executives who are hoping to expand their brand and create a more expansive customer base have been advised to embrace social media.

Amy Jo Martin, founder and chief of social media consultancy Digital Royalty and author of social media book Renegades Write The Rules, believes that companies can no longer ignore the power of the internet.

"It's 2012, and people don't buy what you do but why you do it. Social media helps companies of all sizes expose the individuals behind the brand, humanise it and build influence," she underlined.

Sales people keen to expand into social media are encouraged by Ms Martin to connect with their customers by humanising their brand over sites like Facebook and Twitter.

Friendly questions can also be asked of followers to get an idea of what the public is after from a brand, while social media portals also enable firms to strengthen their relationships with journalists.

Surprising details to include on a CV

Those on the hunt for a new job have been told of the surprising details that could actually work to strengthen a CV.

BusinessNewsDaily has reported on the items that can help make a resume stand out from the crowd, with advice on each topic provided by business experts.

For one, political stances on a CV can answer an employer's question of whether someone will be a good fit in a workplace.

Chris Westfall, a professional development coach and author of The New Elevator Pitch, commented: "Every job seeker wants to find common ground and a connection to the company or hiring manager. What better way to make a connection than through the causes that you support?"

Meanwhile, Phil Rosenberg, president of reCareered.com, believes that jobhunters should not be afraid to put their career failings on their CV.

"Employers want to see that you've tried, failed and learned from your failure, all on a prior employer's dime," he pointed out.

Travel experience, examples of low-level jobs, any side projects undertaken and awards or recognition should all also be included on a resume if possible.

Tips for answering tough questions in sales jobs

Those employed in sales jobs have been advised how to tackle the tough questions commonly asked by sceptical prospective customers.

Steve W Martin, an expert on sales linguistics and founder of the Heavy Hitter sales philosophy company, believes that how people answer such queries will often prove to be the difference between winning and losing a contract.

With this in mind, those recruited in sales should always ensure they understand a question before they begin to provide an answer.

Mr Martin wrote on the Heavy Hitter Sales Blog: "Either rephrase the question in your mind in your own words and repeat it to the questioner aloud or ask the questioner to further explain what he meant before answering."

Every query should also be tackled with the determination to give an expert's point of view, while domain expertise should shine through.

Questions that are deemed inappropriate or inane should be directed, such as by beginning an answer with "the question you really should be asking is…", Mr Martin went on to advise.

Apprentices provide employers with plenty of benefits

Employers who are looking to expand their workplace have been encouraged to consider taking on a few apprentices.

Ian Harper, chief executive of ATG Training, pointed out that his company often receives calls from business leaders requesting such workers who are working on their "skills and succession planning".

The reasons for approaching apprentices are vast, ranging from the need to replace a skilled member of staff who is approaching retirement to the urgency of filling the gap following a number of people moving on from a company.

Furthermore, Mr Harper acknowledged: "It allows the company to develop someone of their own reach, so that the young person works within the culture of the organisation and becomes a company man so to speak."

On top of this, bringing apprentices in can help an employer deliver a statement to the rest of their workforce that they are determined to develop their staff members and progress a worker's skill set.

Employers advised 'set up a service to tackle workplace discrimination'

Employers have been giving advice on how they can work to tackle instances of discrimination in the workplace.

John Rushton, The Life Doctor, readily admits that there is "no perfect solution" to tackle this issue, with some companies reacting much better to cases of discrimination than others.

However, the expert acknowledged: "Much of it stems from the top downwards and at times unsuitable recruitment. Having people of good temperament is as important as their ability to do their job."

Furthermore, Mr Rushton recommends every company to set up a system where a grievance or complaint relating to discrimination can be aired.

This does not even need to be technology heavy, as it can simply be a person of confidence who staff members can approach to highlight an objection.

Mr Rushton's advice was delivered just as an age discrimination ban was introduced in the UK.

From October 1st 2012, it will be unlawful for service providers, whether they are in private or public service jobs, to discriminate solely on the basis of age.

Interpersonal skills 'should be taught during university'

People who are studying at university should aim to boost their interpersonal skills during this stage of their lives.

This is the opinion of Dan Hawes, co-founder of the Graduate Recruitment Bureau, who reckons that every student should aim to "make the most of their time at university".

In this respect, people should aim to do more than just learning the theory and information of their chosen course during the three years they are at a specific university.

Mr Hawes was keen to note that interpersonal skills have to expand past just group projects though, as anyone can give examples of these.

"If you have got out of your comfort zone, be it while you've had some work experience, voluntary experience, or organising something, that would make you more attractive to potential employers," Mr Hawes pointed out.

The expert added that any interpersonal skills picked up during a person's university years should be mentioned on a CV, in order to display a diverse range of skills.

Auto-enrolment 'is a positive move for the British workplace'

The auto-enrolment pension scheme, which was introduced in the UK yesterday (October 1st), has been hailed as being a "positive" move on the government's part.

According to Teresa Fritz, consumer finance expert at MoneyVista, the strategy is "a good thing" for Britain as a whole and believes that everyone who can take advantage of the scheme should do so as soon as possible.

She explained: "Apart from anything else, your employer has to put in there as well. It’s like turning down extra pay not to do it.

"You're not getting it into your hand but you are getting it into your pension and that is going to be there for you for the rest of your life."

Ms Fritz did note that many people who opt in will find that their paypacket shrinks slightly as a result, but it means that employees are better prepared when their retirement years loom.

Auto-enrolment should also significantly reduce the pension saving gap in the UK, and "is really the government's only way to encourage people to start saving for retirement", the financial expert concluded.

Tips to excel as a physiotherapist

People who are considering pursuing a career in physiotherapy have been given advice on excelling in this line of work by someone who has done just that.

Alison Wyndham, a physiotherapist and owner of The Wyndham Centres, believes that there is a long list of qualities that someone needs in order to make a good physiotherapist.

This includes having empathy, being a good listener, having a passion for work, being well organised and showing excellent time-keeping skills.

Ms Wyndham added that being flexible, adaptable and patient are all highly important qualities too, as is the skill of being a good communicator.

From her own experience, the physiotherapist added: "Don't underestimate how much a patient wants to know, explaining what you are going to do and why is important.  Use 'hands on' physiotherapy, touch is so important in the healing process."

The Wyndham Centre has been providing swift and professional physiotherapy to people across the UK for affordable rates since 1979.

Depression 'still rife in the workplace'

Many people in employment across the UK are being forced to take time off work due to depression.

A new Mori study carried out upon the request of the European Depression Association (EDA) highlighted that one in ten workers have been unable to come to work due to the condition.

The survey involved employees from Britain, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Turkey, Spain and France being studied, with those from the former three countries most likely to take time off work due to depression.

However, the study did go on to reveal that the amount of support being offered to people with depression has improved.

In fact, 20 per cent of the 7,000 workers questioned stated that they had received a diagnosis for the condition, with this rate being largest in the UK.

Dr Vincenzo Costigliola, president of the EDA, is hopeful that more will be done in the future though. He noted: "We ask policymakers to consider the impact of depression on the workforce and charge them with addressing depression and workers and workplace safety."

Employment legislation 'locking unemployed out of workforce'

Increasing amounts of regulation could lock people out of the workforce, expert have warned, indicating that different approaches should be taken for small and large businesses.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) warned that employment legislation, while benefiting those already in employment, could lock disadvantaged groups out of the workforce.

It explained that regulation increases the risks linked to hiring new recruits, and this is amplified in the case of small businesses, which could affect the employer's willingness to recruit in the first place.

The FSB contended that this is a particularly important issue for recruitment, as more than eight in 10 unemployed people that find work do so with a small business.

John Walker, National Chairman, Federation of Small Businesses, warned:"Taking a one-size-fits-all approach doesn't always work.

"Too many policymakers don't think about the consequences of policy for small firms or for the people that are on the outside of the jobs market trying to get in."

A diverse workplace 'increases productivity'

The benefits of a diverse and inclusive workplace is that everyone feels valued and respected, so much so that they feel that their contributions make a difference to the organisation.

According to Anni Townend, leadership consultant, coach and author of Assertiveness and Diversity, employees  who feel that they belong to something, that their efforts matters to an organisation, are more likely to engage with others and work more productively.

"We feel more confident to be ourselves and enjoy bigger relationships in which there is a higher level of support and challenge; people are committed to each other’s success and are looking out for each other," she said.

There are challenges to creating such a positive environment, and this stems from our own behaviour and attitudes, she added.

"Without realising we can find ourselves excluding someone through our behaviour," Ms Townend continued. "One of the biggest challenges is if leaders and managers are not thinking about diversity as part of everything that they are leading for and are not encouraging of inclusivity."
