Rumours are circulating that Apple is preparing to release the new gadget as early as October 17th, as a direct competitor for Google's Nexus 7 and Amazon's Kindle Fire.
Both of these examples are seven-inch tablets – making them much more convenient for mobile use than the 9.7-inch standard Apple iPad – which also have lower price tags.
However, the iPad Mini is expected to be designed with a 7.85-inch display, on top of coming complete with a lower resolution screen.
Industry sources cited by The Guardian also claim that the device will connect to the internet solely by Wi-Fi.
The reason for this is that not needing to rely on 3G or 4G connectivity can keep the cost of developing the iPad Mini down and bring it in line with the price of a Nexus 7 or Kindle Fire tablet.
