Ian Harper, chief executive of ATG Training, pointed out that his company often receives calls from business leaders requesting such workers who are working on their "skills and succession planning".
The reasons for approaching apprentices are vast, ranging from the need to replace a skilled member of staff who is approaching retirement to the urgency of filling the gap following a number of people moving on from a company.
Furthermore, Mr Harper acknowledged: "It allows the company to develop someone of their own reach, so that the young person works within the culture of the organisation and becomes a company man so to speak."
On top of this, bringing apprentices in can help an employer deliver a statement to the rest of their workforce that they are determined to develop their staff members and progress a worker's skill set.
