According to Anni Townend, leadership consultant, coach and author of Assertiveness and Diversity, employees who feel that they belong to something, that their efforts matters to an organisation, are more likely to engage with others and work more productively.
"We feel more confident to be ourselves and enjoy bigger relationships in which there is a higher level of support and challenge; people are committed to each other’s success and are looking out for each other," she said.
There are challenges to creating such a positive environment, and this stems from our own behaviour and attitudes, she added.
"Without realising we can find ourselves excluding someone through our behaviour," Ms Townend continued. "One of the biggest challenges is if leaders and managers are not thinking about diversity as part of everything that they are leading for and are not encouraging of inclusivity."
