Figures released by the Internet Advertising Bureau and PwC showed, on a like-for-like basis, that online advertising experienced an increase of 12.8 per cent last year, breaking the £4 billion mark.
Anna Bartz, strategy manager at PwC, said: "All formats – display, search and classifieds – contributed, although display showed the strongest recovery. This was driven by video, social media and mobile, channels which build a strong foundation for 2011."
According to the research, £1 in every £4 spent on advertising is now directed online.
A number of reasons for this growth were identified, with key drivers being named as an increase in marketing budgets, the continuing obsession with social media, faster speeds allowing for more video advertising and growth in the online audience.
Figures released recently from Handle revealed strong growth in the number of media positions available between January and February, with roles in marketing increasing by 20 per cent.
