Research by education company Pearson suggested that many industries such as aerospace and IT are suffering because school leavers and graduates lack the necessary skills, the Daily Telegraph reports.
The survey revealed that only 16 per cent of companies believe children are taught the right combination of practical and academic skills.
"Young people need to have an understanding of the context that business operates in and be able to apply their learning. Communication skills, team working, eye contact and [positive] body language are all the skills you get in the course of practical learning," said Rod Bristow, president of Pearson UK.
Speaking earlier this month, Spencer Mehlman of Notgoingtouni.co.uk said it is important that people undertake work experience placements before deciding the future direction of their careers.
He suggested that many school leavers and graduates make the wrong decisions because they lack industry experience.
