Number of over-65s in work increases

The number of people aged over 65 but still in full-time employment, including sales jobs, is on the rise, according to the latest official figures.

Data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows that 2.7 per cent of over-65s, or 270,000, were working full-time in 2010, up from the 1.2 per cent recorded in March 2001.

The data also showed that the 870,000 either full or part-time workers aged over 65 comprised three per cent of all workers in December 2010, compared with 1.5 per cent of the UK in March 2001.

"In October to December 2010, of those aged 65 and over and working, 83 per cent had been continuously employed for five years or more, with just over two in five working in the same job for 20 years or more," the ONS revealed.

A recent survey carried out by Aaron Wallis Sales Recruitment found that 86 per cent of workers in sales jobs had been in the industry for five years or more, with ten per cent having in excess of 30 years' experience.
