David Kern, chief economist at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), made the comments after the organisation's latest quarterly survey revealed that the UK economy continued to grow in the fourth quarter of 2010, driven by the manufacturing sector.
He noted that it is now important to support jobs in this sector, which may includes sales recruitment positions, if the recovery is to be sustained.
"It is important to nourish and reinforce the manufacturing recovery by helping companies retain valuable skills, and ensuring that exporters are not at a disadvantage in key areas such as trade finance," Mr Kern explained.
Last week, David Frost, director general of the BCC, said that the pledge by the prime minister to drive private sector job creation will be vital to the success of small businesses in 2011.
