Job opportunities 'rise by 4%'

The number of job opportunities available in the UK has risen by four per cent, according to the latest statistics.

Figures published by Reed as part of its Job Index show that the number of job placements available in the UK was four per cent higher in December 2010 than at the same point the year before.

Although available jobs fell slightly from November 2010, salaries for new jobs increased last month by three points in the Reed Job Index, following a seven-month slump and are now at the level seen 12 months ago.

Overall, job demand has increased by more than ten per cent year on year in the east and west Midlands, Yorkshire and the Humber, East Anglia and Scotland, as well as by five per cent or more in London and the south-east.

According to the Federation of Small Businesses, now is the time for firms to think about how they can take on new employees in the month ahead, with a "fresh approach" needed for sales recruitment and hiring other employees.
