Dr Ros Altmann, director general at Saga, said that the coalition government's confirmation that companies will no longer be able to sack workers simply because they have reached 65 years old will benefit young and old alike.
She explained that if the baby boomer generation is not allowed to work past 65 then the country's economic output may be damaged, as this demographic will be forced to live on "meagre" pensions and funding which could be used to create jobs for younger people would be cut.
"If we waste their skills and throw them out of work, without much money to live on, they will have less to spend, create less jobs for younger workers and set in train economic decline," Dr Altmann explained.
A recent survey conducted by Aaron Wallis Sales Recruitment found that ten per cent of sales staff have been in the industry for over 30 years, with a further 29 per cent being in the sector for between 20 and 30 years.
