Retaining accountants 'a top priority' in 2011

The majority of organisations claim that retaining top accountancy workers is one of their main priorities in 2011, it has been claimed.

A poll carried out by Hays and seen by the Recruiter suggests that two-thirds of employers in the sector are focusing on staff retention, which may include sales recruitment positions, in the coming months.

In addition, the data shows that 40 per cent of employers are concerned that they will not be able to retain top talent, while almost 70 per cent of senior finance professionals are already looking for a new role.

Chris McCarthy, director of the organisation, told the website that firms of all sizes have been lifting recruitment freezes, while many organisations are now also willing to pay more to fill vacancies permanently.

"Competition has already intensified to the extent that senior finance professionals routinely receive more than one job offer," he explained.

According to a recent poll carried out by XpertHR as part of its annual HR roles and responsibilities survey, the majority of private sector employers are aiming to improve the ways in which they attract new talent, which could include sales recruitment candidates.

Retail jobs grow in UK

The number of people in retail jobs in the UK, which may include sales recruitment positions, has increased, the latest figures suggest.

Data compiled by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and Bond Pearce as part of the Retail Employment Monitor Q4 2010 shows that there were 3,900 more people in full-time retail jobs in the last year's final quarter than at the same stage a year earlier.

This marks an increase of 0.6 per cent and was described as a "modest" rise by Stephen Robertson, director general of the BRC.

He added: "Almost two-thirds of retailers say they will add to or maintain job numbers over the next three months and new stores are still being opened. With youth unemployment a major concern, retailers' largely positive outlook is good news for young jobseekers."

Earlier this year, David Roust, head of the recruitment industry team at Barclays Corporate, told the Recruiter that momentum created by UK businesses and retail should help to drive economic growth in the coming 12 months.

Aaron Wallis have a dedicated retail sales team filling sales vacancies across a wide spectrum of the retail industry. Offering a 12 month rebate scheme, Aaron Wallis provide a retail recruitment service that is second to none.

IT and engineering 'best for job prospects'

The sectors with the best chances of gaining permanent employment positions are IT, financial services and engineering, according to a new survey of graduates.

A poll carried out by Milkround.com found that graduates believe there is a greater chance of being hired into permanent employment in these sectors, which may include sales recruitment, than in industries such as the arts and media.

Accounting and banking were also regarded by students as providing good employment prospects, said Milkround.com spokesperson Mike Barnard, with a third 35 per cent of those surveyed stating this.

"The state of the graduate jobs market has been widely discussed since the credit crunch. There are continued signs that the graduate jobs market is improving, but until Britain is in a strong financial position, the situation can change very quickly," he explained.

It comes after a study carried out by High Fliers noted that is vital that the UK's graduates have work experience if they are to enhance their chances of gaining employment, such as in sales recruitment.

Sales jobs vacancies rise in the UK

The number of sales jobs vacancies in the UK rose by 16 per cent and overall sales recruitment positions across all sectors rose by a third, a new report has suggested.

Data compiled by BTA suggests that the IT sector saw a 19 per cent rise in sales vacancies, with financial sales jobs experiencing a 6.2 per cent increase since January 2010 and the manufacturing industry showing a 1.7 per cent rise.

Commenting on the figures, director Ian Harwood said there has been a notable increase in the volume of sales vacancies in business services.

"The research doesn't really surprise me. Trends have seen an increase of 34 per cent and this figure is expected to rise again, with the possibility of growth by an even greater margin in 12 months time," he added.

A recent survey carried out by Aaron Wallis Sales Recruitment suggested that 96 per cent of people working in sales enjoy it, while a whopping 72 per cent judged their career to date to be seven out of ten or more on the satisfaction scale.

Small firms 'clearly' emerging from recession

There are now "very clear" signs that small firms in the UK are beginning to emerge from the recession, a new industry poll has revealed, which includes sales recruitment organisations.

According to the latest Quarterly Survey of Small Business in Britain from the Open University Business School, all sectors reported improved sales performance in the final three months of 2010 and are more positive about prospects for sales in the next quarter.

In addition for the first time in eight quarters, small manufacturers have reported an increase in hiring, with small firms in the south-west having the most positive employment balance at +12 per cent.

Commenting on the data, Dr Richard Blundel, from the Open University Business School noted that companies are also assessing their impact on the environment.

"There are some positive signs, particularly with the more entrepreneurial firms who are identifying opportunities to save costs and to build on personal commitments to environmental issues," he explained.

A recent survey carried out by Aaron Wallis Sales Recruitment found that people in the south-west are the least threatened by redundancy in the country, with only 32 per cent feeling at risk of losing their job.

Private and public sector ties 'will help jobseekers'

Closer ties between recruitment organisations in the private sphere and the public sector will help to improve employment opportunities for jobseekers in Wales, it has been claimed.

Philippa George, director for Recruitment and Employment Confederation Wales, made the comments after new figures revealed that there has been a rise in the number of people in employment in the country, which could include those in sales recruitment.

However, Ms George explained: "Though our unemployment rate is still one of the highest in the four devolved countries, the onus is now on both private and public sector interests to continue working together to help more people back into work."

She explained that providing candidates with knowledge and expertise can help to solve this problem and ensure that more people are filling skilled roles.

Recently, improving UK job prospects was emphasised by data published in the Bank of Scotland Report on Jobs, which showed that the overall Scottish labour market improved once more in December, driven by faster growth in vacancies.

Demand for jobs rises in Scotland

The demand for staff to fill temporary job positions rose at its fastest rate for over three years in Scotland last month, according to the latest figures.

Data published in the new Bank of Scotland Report on Jobs shows that the overall Scottish labour market improved once more in December, driven by faster growth in vacancies.

As well as a rise in demand for permanent positions, which includes those in sales recruitment, temporary vacancies were in particularly high demand, which highlights a "turnaround" in the country's employment market, said Donald MacRae, chief economist at the Bank of Scotland.

"All eight employment sectors registered vacancy growth in December, with the IT and computing sector recording the fastest rate of increase and a six-month high," he explained.

It comes after research commissioned by General Electric showed that 71 per cent of hi-tech companies are optimistic that their performance will improve over the next year.

Ministers 'need to support flexible labour market'

Ministers should take steps to maintain flexibility in the country's labour market, according to an expert from the British Chambers of Commerce.

The organisation's chief economist David Kern suggested that "onerous regulations" should be avoided in order to prevent unemployment levels from increasing.

He stated: "With the prospect that private sector employment could decline over the next year, it is critical that private sector businesses are able to create new jobs."

Mr Kern went on to say that the country's rate of unemployment may also be impacted by interest rate rises in the near future.

The number of jobless people in the UK could grow if such rates are pushed up too early, the commentator suggested, which might concern those in sales recruitment roles.

Over the course of the quarter which led up to November of last year, a 70.4 per cent rate of employment was seen in the UK among the nation's 16 to 64 year-old workers, the Office for National Statistics recently found.

IT job market 'due to expand' as firms aim to cut costs

With a number of firms looking to make financial savings this year, the UK's IT employment market looks likely to expand even more, according to one industry expert.

This year should see the market grow because some companies feel that their IT departments could help them to lower their business outgoings, the Langley James founder and director James Toovey has suggested.

He said: "IT recruitment is so busy at the present time because [companies] laid off everybody, and now they have to get round to actually finding people."

It might be a good option for firms to employ more trainees when they look to take on new IT staff in the months ahead, Mr Toovey went on to say.

Those working in IT sales recruitment learned earlier this week that the Recruitment and Employment Confederation and KPMG Report on Jobs suggested overall permanent staff placements in the UK went up last month.

Coalition 'aiming to support jobs growth in UK's private sector'

Jobs growth is something which the government is aiming to support within the country's private sector, one politician has suggested, which may offer good news to those in sales recruitment positions.

Chris Grayling, the UK's minister for employment, commented that certain positive signs are being witnessed in relation to job vacancies.

He stated: "We inherited ... high levels of worklessness, which we are determined to bring down by ... supporting private sector jobs growth.

"We are already seeing some improvement in the number of vacancies in the economy."

Certain steps have recently been taken by ministers in recent times to try and support the UK's economy, the government has also pointed out.

These are said to include attempts to simplify health and safety legislation and improve apprenticeships investment.

The Office for National Statistics recently revealed that the quarter leading up to November of last year saw a 70.4 per cent employment rate among people who were aged between 16 and 64.

Recruiters 'must consider every option'

Recruiters need to take every factor into account when considering potential candidates, one expert has suggested.

Speaking at the Graduate Recruitment Roundtable in London last week, supported by Michael Page and Recruiter, head of diversity practice at BT Dennis Gissing said "all options" need to be considered when hiring employees, which may include those in the sales recruitment sector.

According to the expert, while universities can be an important source of talent, there are many more avenues which can be explored, such as apprenticeships.

She explained: "Many apprentices become the managers of the future. So it is very important that organisations look at all resourcing options."

It comes after group recruitment manager Lee Evans recently told the Recruiter that companies hiring sales staff, whether in the retail sector or elsewhere, have to ensure that the correct people are being hired so that costly employment tribunals and other problems can be avoided.

Tech sector 'will boost UK employment'

UK employment will receive a boost from the technology sector this year, according to a new study.

Research commissioned by General Electric shows that 71 per cent of hi-tech companies are optimistic that their performance will improve over the next year.

The data also revealed that half of companies in the sector intend to recruit more workers over the next 12 months, which may include those in sales recruitment positions.

Mark Elborne, president and chief executive of GE in the UK, said hi-tech manufacturers were "much more confident" than other organisations.

"Our research shows a vibrant and positive sector that can help revitalise the UK economy over the next few years. Many of those surveyed had a positive 2010 and feel confident about 2011, particularly when discussing the potential in export markets," he explained.

It comes after David Kern, chief economist at the British Chambers of Commerce, said that the ongoing recovery in the UK's industrial and manufacturing sectors needs to be reinforced if the country is to avoid potential risks.

REC: Recruiters to play a key role in 2011

Recruiters are to play a key role in 2011 as they help older workers to access new opportunities, one sector body has claimed.

According to the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), the UK employment market will continue to evolve to reflect the changing demographics of society.

His comments followed the coalition government's announcement that the default retirement age is to be scrapped, so that companies can no longer make workers aged 65 or over redundant purely based on their age.

Tom Hadley, the REC's director of policy and professional services, said that the government's move will cerate complexities, but these can be offset by recruiters assisting older staff, which includes those in sales recruitment.

He explained: "There will be an increasing desire and, in many cases, an increasing need for individuals to prolong their working lives. Professional recruiters can play a key role by helping older workers to explore new opportunities and access both temporary and permanent jobs."

UK industrial recovery 'must be reinforced'

The ongoing recovery in the UK's industrial and manufacturing sectors needs to be reinforced if the country is to avoid potential risks, one sector expert has noted.

David Kern, chief economist at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), made the comments after the organisation's latest quarterly survey revealed that the UK economy continued to grow in the fourth quarter of 2010, driven by the manufacturing sector.

He noted that it is now important to support jobs in this sector, which may includes sales recruitment positions, if the recovery is to be sustained.

"It is important to nourish and reinforce the manufacturing recovery by helping companies retain valuable skills, and ensuring that exporters are not at a disadvantage in key areas such as trade finance," Mr Kern explained.

Last week, David Frost, director general of the BCC, said that the pledge by the prime minister to drive private sector job creation will be vital to the success of small businesses in 2011.

Ending default retirement age 'can benefit all workers'

It is not only older workers who will benefit from the end of the retirement age, but younger ones too, according to one sector expert.

Dr Ros Altmann, director general at Saga, said that the coalition government's confirmation that companies will no longer be able to sack workers simply because they have reached 65 years old will benefit young and old alike.

She explained that if the baby boomer generation is not allowed to work past 65 then the country's economic output may be damaged, as this demographic will be forced to live on "meagre" pensions and funding which could be used to create jobs for younger people would be cut.

"If we waste their skills and throw them out of work, without much money to live on, they will have less to spend, create less jobs for younger workers and set in train economic decline," Dr Altmann explained.

A recent survey conducted by Aaron Wallis Sales Recruitment found that ten per cent of sales staff have been in the industry for over 30 years, with a further 29 per cent being in the sector for between 20 and 30 years.

Profitability and VAT 'key concerns' in 2011

The VAT rise and overall profitability will be the key concerns among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in 2011, including those in sales recruitment, a new survey has found.

According to a poll of 500 SMEs commissioned by independent body TheCityUK, 43 per cent of respondents believe that reduced margins and the subsequent effect on profitability will be their main challenges this year.

Meanwhile, the rise in VAT to 20 per cent was a major concern for 39 per cent of SMEs and reduced cashflow is an issue for just over a third.

Chris Cummings, chief executive of TheCityUK, said there is "no doubt" that this year will pose challenges to firms and said it is important to address any obstacles to growth.

"Business has pressing concerns that must be heard if the private sector is to create the jobs and opportunities needed to take up the challenge of generating real growth and make sure the UK remains globally competitive," he added.

According to the Work Foundation, while the UK jobs market saw growth in 2010, fragility still remains, so it is important to increase the number of permanent jobs available, such as those in sales recruitment.

Work Foundation highlights key UK challenges

A number of key challenges facing the UK economy have been highlighted by the Work Foundation, including building a framework for more effective innovation.

According to the organisation, while the UK jobs market saw growth in 2010, fragility still remains, so it is important to increase the number of permanent jobs available, such as those in sales recruitment.

In addition, driving an "export-driven boom" to stimulate the manufacturing industry will be important, as will expanding the economic recovery to regions of the UK which are "flagging".

Finally, placing more focus on integration will help to boost businesses in the coming months, the foundation predicted.

"The rise of global communications technology has allowed firms to create complex networks and partnerships around the world. If the UK is to keep pace with businesses around the world, our firms must embrace integration and strategic partnerships," he said.

It comes after the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development launched its new public policy platform for 2011, which is intended to boost jobs prospects in the UK.

Entitled Blueprint for Growth, it calls for greater investment in areas such as management and leadership skills to underpin economic recovery.

Employment trends 'will hold steady in 2011'

The UK's employment trends are set to remain steady in the next 12 months, if a little cautious, as the economic recovery continues.

That is according to a new industry report published by CareerBuilder which showed that 73 per cent of UK employers are confident about the financial performance of their organisation.

In addition, 39 per cent of the country's hirers said they will add new workers in the next 12 months, including those in sales recruitment, with one in five planning to add full-time, permanent staff.

Tony Roy, president of CareerBuilder EMEA, said that the study highlights how companies are definitely hiring again, although at a "guarded pace".

"Our survey points to gradual, moderate improvements in the UK job market in 2011. We'll see more jobs added across a variety of industries, but it will still be a highly competitive job market," he explained.

According to the recent Markit/Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply UK Services Purchasing Managers Index, confidence among UK firms is gradually improving as the economic outlook becomes brighter.

Sales recruitment staff 'applying for more jobs at once'

As one expert claimed that yesterday (January 11th) was the busiest day of the year for people seeking jobs online, it is clear that sales recruitment candidates and other jobseekers are now applying for more jobs at once than ever before.

A recent survey by Aaron Wallis Recruitment revealed that the proportion of candidates applying for four jobs or more at the same time is 73 per cent - a huge rise on the 39 per cent who did the same in 2007.

This growth seems to be attributed to the rise of the internet as an application platform, as over a third of jobseekers are applying for 20 or more jobs at a time and more than quarter are sending out applications for in excess of 50 jobs in a single sitting.

"Perhaps as expected in the internet era, people are applying for more jobs at once than they claimed that they were doing back in 2007. 79 per cent of people found that the internet has made it easier to find a new job," the survey states.

According to Mark Riley, marketing manager of My Job Group, the second Tuesday in January always sees more application activity than any other day of the year as people look to start the year with a new job.

UK jobs growth 'is solid'

The rise in the number of people being hired into UK jobs, including sales recruitment candidates, is continuing to go up at a "solid" pace, according to the most recent industry figures.

Data published by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG in the Report on Jobs shows that both permanent and temporary placements rose once more in December.

The report also identified that there was a strong rise in the demand for staff, while salaries for permanent workers increased at a faster pace than in November.

Kevin Green, REC's chief executive, said that the figures show that the private sector employment market is continuing to do well.

"The next few months will be very tough for the jobs market in the UK, but we are delighted that the government is saying it intends to be pro business, pro growth and pro jobs," he added.

According to Mark Riley, marketing manager of My Job Group, yesterday (January 11th) was the busiest day of the year for people going online and looking for new jobs, such as those in sales recruitment.

Today 'is the busiest day of 2011' for job searches

More online jobs searches will be conducted today (January 11th) than at any other time in 2011, one organisation has predicted.

According to Mark Riley, marketing manager of My Job Group, the first Tuesday back after January 1st is traditionally the busiest day of the year for people going online and looking up new positions, such as those in sales recruitment.

He told the Recruiter that he expects today to be no different, as people look to start the new year with a new job.

"With many either simply happy to be in employment, or forced to stay put in 2010 due to the recession, we're expecting this year to be our busiest yet as the economy improves and more people start looking for new roles," Mr Riley explained.

His comments follow those of Martin Warnes, managing director of reed.co.uk, who recently said that the UK jobs market has grounds for optimism in 2011 as more positions become available, including those in sales recruitment.

Small businesses 'depending on easier recruitment processes'

Small businesses in the UK are highly dependent on new, skilled staff and this can be achieved through simplifying the recruitment process, according to one sector body.

David Frost, director general of the British Chambers of Commerce, welcomed the coalition government's pledge to make private sector job creation easier by cutting red tape and said that this will lead to more workers being hired, which includes those in sales recruitment.

As job creation is vital to continued economic recovery, Mr Frost pointed out that boosting the confidence of small and medium-sized firms to recruit the right workers is a step in the right direction.

"Some of the proposals aired by the government, including reform of employment tribunals and a radical reduction in regulation for small business, would make a big difference," he added.

However, Mr Frost noted that the coalition needs to highlight exactly what it plans to do to simplify the recruitment process for small and medium-sized firms and remove the obstacles which have stifled job creation for some in the last couple of years.

Manufacturing sector growth activity 'on the rise'

There is growing activity in the manufacturing industry, with the sector expecting better balance in the months ahead, a new report has indicated.

The new Economic Prospects 2011 report published by EEF, the manufacturers' organisation, claimed "sustained, positive contributions" from both investment and net trade will boost the sector this year.

It shows that in 2010 the sector expanded by 3.8 per cent, surpassing industry expectations, with further growth of 3.5 per cent predicted for this year despite the overall economy only forecast to grow by 2.5 per cent.

EEF chief economist Lee Hopley commented: "Manufacturing now looks set to be at the heart of the rebalanced growth the economy needs with sectors most exposed to international markets likely to post the highest growth."

Recent pay data issued by EEF showed that for the three months to the end of November 2010 the average salary for those employed in the industry, which includes sales recruitment staff, rose by two per cent.

Staff productivity 'can be improved through homeworking'

The productivity of the nation's employees, including sales recruitment staff, could be improved if more businesses allowed them to work from home, one sector expert has suggested.

Shirley Borrett, development director at the Telework Association, said that allowing homeworking would improve staff contentment as it creates a greater sense of freedom.

She pointed out that this method also means staff members who feel slightly under the weather and may usually call in sick may feel like they can work remotely instead and help to prevent lost man hours.

The expert added: "That leads us into continuity of business and the whole disruption recently due to weather. Those people that can work from home help their business to carry on working even when office-based people are stumped."

It comes after a survey by Dymo suggested that staff who are allowed to work from home are more productive than colleagues who are solely based in the office.

IT spending to grow in 2011

Spending on information technology (IT), which includes staff recruitment, is expected to grow in 2011, the latest industry forecast predicts.

According to global analyst Gartner, spending in the IT sector will rise by 5.1 per cent in the next 12 months, as companies increase expenditure on services, equipment and recruiting new employees.

Overall, worldwide IT spending is forecast to amount to $3.6 trillion this year, up from the $3.4 trillion recorded last year.

Richard Gordon, research vice president at Gartner, said that businesses are increasingly regarding IT investment as essential for growth.

"As well as a fundamental enabler of cost reduction and cost optimisation, investment in IT is seen increasingly as an important element in business growth strategies. We are optimistic about continued healthy spending on IT," he added.

Earlier this week, James Richmond, sales director at recruiters Cititec, said that he expects there to be a boost in permanent hiring in 2011 as organisations move away from contractor workers.

Business confidence 'is improving' in the UK

Confidence among UK firms is gradually improving as the economic outlook becomes brighter, the latest report indicates.

According to the new Markit/Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply (CIPS) UK Services Purchasing Managers Index, output in the manufacturing sector increased further last month, which may bode well for sales recruitment positions in the industry.

Commenting on the report, David Noble, chief executive officer at the CIPS, said: "On the plus side, it's encouraging to see that business confidence for next year continued to improve slowly with the promise of stronger economic recovery."

He added that many sectors will be hoping there is a spill over from the "booming" manufacturing sector to further ease any economic worries.

Following the Reed Job Index for December, Martin Warnes, managing director of reed.co.uk, said that the UK jobs market has grounds for optimism in the coming year as more positions become available.

Coalition 'focused on growth and job creation'

The government has expressed its intention to drive growth and create jobs in the UK by expanding the planned New Enterprise Allowance (NEA).

According to the coalition, this will help to create up to 40,000 new businesses by 2013 and ultimately stimulate the economy.

In addition, there will be changes to the way in which information and guidance is provided to businesses, with an increased focus on improving small business performance, which may affect sales recruitment candidates.

Commenting on the plan, employment minister Chris Grayling said: "We will only get our economy back on track when we create a climate in which the private sector can grow and develop, creating jobs and opportunities for people across the country."

It comes after prime minister David Cameron stressed the vital need for jobs to be created in the UK during 2011 in order to boost the economy and called on enterprises to help offset the job cuts the government is making this year.

Many companies 'not offering employee benefits'

Almost half of UK organisations are potentially putting off new recruits by not offering employee benefits, according to a new industry survey.

A poll carried out by BDRC Continental found that 46 per cent of respondents offered no benefits whatsoever, and this was even greater among firms with a turnover of less than £100,000, as 68 per cent of businesses had no reward scheme in place.

In addition, only one in ten businesses were found to be protecting themselves against the impact of a key member of the organisation being unable to work.

Commenting on the figures, Shiona Davies, director of business to business for BDRC Continental, said: "This survey is clear evidence that the vast majority of small businesses are failing to protect themselves against the business impact of losing key employees."

It follows the results of a recent survey published by Aaron Wallis Sales Recruitment, which showed that a big motivator for sales staff to remain with an organisation is the prospect of career progression, as well as their employer's products, reputation and competitive edge.

Job opportunities 'rise by 4%'

The number of job opportunities available in the UK has risen by four per cent, according to the latest statistics.

Figures published by Reed as part of its Job Index show that the number of job placements available in the UK was four per cent higher in December 2010 than at the same point the year before.

Although available jobs fell slightly from November 2010, salaries for new jobs increased last month by three points in the Reed Job Index, following a seven-month slump and are now at the level seen 12 months ago.

Overall, job demand has increased by more than ten per cent year on year in the east and west Midlands, Yorkshire and the Humber, East Anglia and Scotland, as well as by five per cent or more in London and the south-east.

According to the Federation of Small Businesses, now is the time for firms to think about how they can take on new employees in the month ahead, with a "fresh approach" needed for sales recruitment and hiring other employees.

Business and retail 'should drive economic growth'

Momentum created by UK businesses and retail should help to drive economic growth in the coming 12 months, one recruitment expert has predicted.

David Roust, head of the recruitment industry team at Barclays Corporate, told the Recruiter that "sufficient momentum" will ensure that the UK economy continues to grow, with economists at the bank estimating growth of 1.6 per cent in 2010, 2.1 per cent this year and 2.2 next year.

However, while this is likely to create a "stable" environment for UK firms, subdued growth rates may have a negative impact on unemployment figures, the specialist added.

"In terms of general demand, a strengthening in household consumption, net trade and investment should offset some of the fall in public sector demand. Business investment certainly has the potential to grow in 2011," he added.

It comes after the Recruitment and Employment Confederation's December JobsOutlook revealed that 23 per cent of organisations will employ more permanent workers next year, including those in sales recruitment, while 32 per cent will be taking on more temporary staff.

IT recruitment 'will grow in 2011'

The number of people being recruited into IT jobs, particularly those in the financial services sector, will increase in the coming months, one expert has predicted.

James Richmond, sales director at recruiters Cititec, said that he expects there to be a boost in permanent hiring in 2011 as organisations move away from contractor workers.

He told efinancialcareers that IT budgets among financial firms will be bigger in 2011 and as a result companies are more likely to take on permanent staff to deal with technological deployments.

Mr Richmond explained: "We're definitely seeing the contractor market depreciating and the permanent market growing."

Meanwhile, a recent study carried out by the Centre for Economics and Business Research showed that the IT industry is forecast to grow at an annual rate of 5.1 per cent in the years to 2015 and will drive employment growth in the next five years by creating as many as 93,000 jobs, which could include those in sales recruitment.

Firms 'need a fresh approach to jobs' in 2011

A fresh approach to job creation needs to be adopted by the country's small businesses in 2011, one industry body has urged.

According to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), now is the time for firms to think about how they can take on new employees, such as those in sales recruitment positions, and stimulate recovery.

"Job creation is key in kick-starting meaningful economic growth. Over the last decade small firms have been responsible for more than 80 per cent of new jobs in the private sector. And they will do this again - but only if the conditions are right," said John Walker, national chairman of the FSB.

However, he said that the "ever-changing" employment laws in the UK are putting some firms off hiring – something which needs to be addressed by the government if recruitment is to increase.

Last week, John Philpott, chief economic adviser to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, said the strong growth in the jobs market in 2010 should be sustained this year and help to offset the impact of predicted job losses.
