Unpaid overtime 'the norm' for many UK staff

Unpaid overtime has now become a permanent part of working life for many British staff, who are regularly putting in many extra hours a week to keep their employer happy, a new report reveals.

Research carried out buy Travelodge shows that a third of the nation's employees currently work 16 hours a week more than they did five years ago.

Overall, one in ten workers are cramming a whole extra week of unpaid work into their weekly schedules, with the average worker now putting in 9.1 extra unpaid hours every week, which is the equivalent of £5,276.18 in unpaid time every year.

A third of workers now spend fewer than six hours relaxing at the weekend, while six in ten head into each weekend knowing that they will not be able to get work out of their minds at all.

A further increasing trend is for work on the go, with one in ten staff regularly interrupting important conversations with friends and family to check their work email and half of staff missing family occasions to take care of work matters at some point.

Corinne Sweet, psychologist and author of Change Your Life with CBT, commented: "This research is certainly a wake-up call for us to switch off our gadgets and get away from the clutter, pressure and stress of working life."
