The term refers to the fact that disabled people in the UK have a combined spending power of £80 billion a year.
Minister for disabled people Maria Miller pointed out: "There are now over 11 million disabled people in the UK today, which is around 19 per cent of the population. This equates to a lot of clout for the purple pound."
As such, Ms Miller has helped to launch a new guide, entitled 'Growing your customer base to include disabled people'.
As well as advising employers of how they can make their businesses more accessible to disabled customers, the guide lists legal obligations that SMEs need to follow and cost-effective ways of making those with a disability more welcome into a firm's services.
There is also a section in the document, which is available to read on the Department for Work and Pensions website, detailing how such changes can help a business to grow.
"It's a practical guide for businesses which gives common–sense and often low–cost solutions, which can make a big difference to a disabled customer," Ms Miller underlined.
