The data has established that the employment rate for people aged between 16 and 64 was 71 per cent in the last quarter, which is a rise of 0.4 per cent on the January to March quarter.
Overall, the unemployment rate was eight per cent of the economically active population, which is a reduction of 0.2 per cent on the previous quarter, while there were 2.56 million unemployed people in all, which is down 46,000.
The figures also revealed that the inactivity rate for those aged between 16 and 64 was 22.6 per cent, down 0.3 per cent on the quarter, while there were 9.1 million economically inactive people of working age - a reduction of 117,000.
The ONS also shed light on salaries, with total pay including bonuses rising by 1.6 per cent on the year before and by 0.1 per cent on the three months to May 2012.
Furthermore, regular pay excluding bonuses rose by 1.8 per cent on a year earlier, which is unchanged on the quarter to May 2012.
