Big data strategies 'can help a company evolve'

Working out a big data strategy is critical if a company manager wishes to keep up with their main business rivals.

This is the opinion of Waqas Hashemi, programme director of the Big Data Analytics 2012 event, who pointed out that the working environment is much more competitive today.

As such, the business expert advised that an employer must root out their company's weaknesses and identify its strengths in order to build up worthy competition and growth in their chosen sector.

Mr Hashemi stated that a big data strategy can help to achieve these goals, adding: "Once you have got that in place, you can evolve more and grow more as an organisation."

He was speaking ahead of the Big Data Analytics 2012 event, which is taking place at London's Victoria Park Plaza on December 6th.

During the conference, a number of business executives and those in senior positions at large corporations will discuss the benefits that a big data strategy can give them.

Mr Hashemi acknowledged that the event is particularly helpful as mobile data and social media analytics are beginning to change the face of traditional big data.

Retailers urged to 'understand customer needs to excel'

Retail managers have been encouraged to understand the needs and desires of their target customers in order to boost conversions and sales.

Susan Etlinger, an industry analyst at Altimeter Group, explained that it is highly important that those in the retail industry "piece together cause and effect".

This is made much more challenging today as retailers are seeing an increase in variables, as little as six or seven years previously.

As such, Ms Etlinger stated: "So the more you can understand what people actually like and respond to - the more effectively you can tune your sales and marketing strategies."

One of the major developments which has been seen in the retail industry over the past decade is the shift from the high street to online shopping.

Ms Etlinger has also tried to help out in this area by pointing out that "correlations and multivariate testing" has enabled companies to establish a link between online and offline worlds.

However, the expert was keen to underline: "This is a bit of a challenge, as all people are different and what works for one customer may not work for another."

British restaurants record spending increase during London 2012

The London 2012 Olympic Games has proved to be a particularly healthy period for restaurants across the UK, new research reveals.

Statistics recorded by Lloyds TSB has found that eateries across Britain witnessed the largest rise in spending in the duration of the biggest sporting event in the world.

Spending in restaurants during London 2012 rose by an average of 11.5 per cent, when compared to the same period last year.

"During the Olympics, the restaurant sector saw the strongest rise in spending growth, possibly boosted by those looking to enjoy the party atmosphere generated by the Olympics," Suren Thiru, economist at Lloyds TSB, pointed out.

Spending on health and beauty products also rose, by 6.6 per cent annually, as did purchases of food and drink (six per cent) and electrical devices (4.8 per cent).

Mr Thiru noted: "The rise in spending in the top three categories could all be partly linked back to either celebrating the event or consumers being inspired by what they were watching."

Lloyds TSB's study follows on from the YouGov BrandIndex highlighting that sportswear brand Adidas recorded a substantial increase in Buzz during the Olympic Games.

SME owners advised how to make use of the 'purple pound'

A new guide has looked to encourage owners of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to realise the potential of the 'purple pound'.

The term refers to the fact that disabled people in the UK have a combined spending power of £80 billion a year.

Minister for disabled people Maria Miller pointed out: "There are now over 11 million disabled people in the UK today, which is around 19 per cent of the population. This equates to a lot of clout for the purple pound."

As such, Ms Miller has helped to launch a new guide, entitled 'Growing your customer base to include disabled people'.

As well as advising employers of how they can make their businesses more accessible to disabled customers, the guide lists legal obligations that SMEs need to follow and cost-effective ways of making those with a disability more welcome into a firm's services.

There is also a section in the document, which is available to read on the Department for Work and Pensions website, detailing how such changes can help a business to grow.

"It's a practical guide for businesses which gives common–sense and often low–cost solutions, which can make a big difference to a disabled customer," Ms Miller underlined.

Tips to excel in a video CV for online interview

Those on the hunt for a new job have been told how they can catch the attention of potential employers by partaking in a video CV for online interview.

Such a strategy is becoming popular with employers and employees alike, as it cuts out the need for a mutually convenient interview date to be arranged and can help speed up a recruitment drive.

However, career development firm The Needle Online underlined that people taking part in a video CV for online interview need to bear in mind a number of tips.

Before even stepping in front of a camera, a jobseeker should know what they are going to say, while men should always be clean-shaven for the clip.

Appearance is very important for this form of CV, so people should aim to sit or stand tall, smile and be enthusiastic at all times, avoid wearing strong contrasting colours which will clash with a background and avoid glare from glasses or jewellery.

Job candidates should refrain from fiddling around with their hands in a video CV for online interview too, as well as always looking straight at the camera when speaking.

Pilot scheme looks to grant more young Londoners work experience

A new project being set up in London aims to help more young people in the capital to boost their career prospects.

It has been found that while young Londoners achieve performance levels that are above average at school, they often struggle to compete once thrust into the jobs market.

Employment minister Chris Grayling and London mayor Boris Johnson have looked to solve this problem with the launch of a pilot scheme.

In the unique project, young people in London who have not previously completed six months of paid employment must partake in work experience so that they can claim benefits.

Mr Johnson stated: "It's no secret that work experience can be the key that opens the door to a successful career and more young Londoners need to be given the opportunity to do it."

Simon Walker, the director general of the Institute of Directors, has welcomed the pilot scheme, believing that "youth unemployment is a devastating waste of potential".

"It is absolutely right that the government is seeking to give the young unemployed the chance to gain experience of the workplace," he added.

New measures to help SMEs improve their apprenticeship programmes

New measures are being introduced in order to give small and medium enterprises (SMEs) a helping hand for taking on apprentices.

Jeweller and social entrepreneur Jason Holt has published a report which details that a lack of awareness by SMEs has proved a barrier of such businesses taking on apprentices or using them effectively within a workplace.

By analysing the report, the government has now announced a number of innovative measures to make this career path more enticing.

For one, the Coalition will now work more closely with people such as lawyers and accountants, which SMEs often look to for advice when promoting apprenticeships.

Owners of SMEs will also have increased means in which to give apprentices the training they need to excel, while the Apprenticeship Grant for Employers will be made simpler and more accessible to more employers.

Business secretary Vince Cable pointed out: "Only a small minority of SMEs currently employ apprentices. Many of the rest are missing out on an effective way of growing and up-skilling their businesses."

The new measures were announced soon after the National Apprenticeship Service revealed that apprenticeship applications are up 53 per cent when compared to last year's figures.

Economic circumstances 'making older women work longer'

A business expert has looked into why more older men are in employment than older women.

Research by the Resolution Foundation has found that 72 per cent of older men are in a job role at the moment, compared to just 60 per cent of older women.

Dr Dianne Bown-Wilson, chief executive of In My Prime, believes that one issue is that the difficult economy and the fact that the state pension is received later now is leading to women having no choice but to work longer than what they once did.

"So those women who in the past wouldn't have needed to have worked and would have been coming into the retired statistics, are now still available to work and still needing to work," Ms Bown-Wilson pointed out.

The Resolution Foundation report also highlighted that the UK ranks 15th out of 34 OECD countries for older workers, with the country 15 percentage points behind the top five nations.

However, Ms Bown-Wilson underlined: "What I do want to stress though is that it isn't a battle between older people and younger people. I think the real issue is that employers have to think about their fairness in employing people."

Companies linked to London 2012 witness increase in Buzz

Companies which were heavily associated with the London 2012 Olympic Games have seen a boost in activity since the event got underway last month.

Sportswear brand Adidas has shot to the top of the YouGov BrandIndex after seeing an increase in Buzz during the biggest sport's event in the world.

YouGov's BrandIndex Buzz is calculated over a two-week period and involves adults in the UK being asked if they have heard anything positive or negative about a certain brand.

Adidas' Buzz has seen a positive change of 7.6 over the Olympic Games, with the sportswear brand catching the attention of the nation with its 'Take the Stage' advertising campaign.

Other brands who have witnessed a positive boost in Buzz during London 2012 include German car maker BMW (4.8-point increase during the Games), Sainsbury's (4.4 points) and British Airways (2.3 points).

The excitement of Britain's summer of sport continues with the London 2012 Paralympics, which take place in the capital between August 29th and September 9th.

Office jargon proving popular around British workplaces

Workplaces across the UK are now filled with employees who are keen to use words and phrases filled with office jargon.

A new poll carried out for Wonga.com has found that 44 per cent of office workers frequently use the terms "thinking outside the box" and "it's a no brainer" when they try to communicate messages to their colleagues.

In fact, male employees have gone as far as to admit to using office jargon as they believe that such terminology will boost their chances of promotion.

When questioned how they came across the phrases, many employees said that they heard the jargon being used by colleagues and adopted them into their own speech.

TV shows such as The Apprentice and Dragon's Den were also blamed for encouraging the use of nonsensical phrases in the workplace.

However, Tim Phillips, who is helping Wonga.com publish a guide to straight talking in an office, stated: "There are two rules to good communication: say what you mean, and mean what you say.

"Employees often complain about jargon in the office and the notorious office 'waffler' who struggles to make a clear point through all the cliches."

Career paths 'must be thought out over the long term'

Female workers have been encouraged to have clear goals throughout their career path and to always have a determination to excel.

Piya Khanna, founder, executive coach and change consultant at Change to Succeed, acknowledged that she has come across many people who expect their manager to tell them what they should be achieving in their chosen career.

Ms Khanna called this attitude "extremely frustrating" before adding: "Women have to realise it's their life and their career and they need to be clear on what they really want from them."

To help get female workers on the path to success, Ms Khanna advised such employees to think about if they have any management aspirations and if they see themselves leading a team in the future.

Other matters that need to be thought out in the early stage of a career path is whether someone wants to work abroad or head along a different area of a business at some point.

"Planning ahead and thinking long and short term are crucial as a career is a long-term affair, while a job is only a short to medium term situation," Ms Khanna added.

Olympic Games 'boosted worker morale'

The morale of British workers was boosted significantly by the London Olympic Games, according to a new report which suggests that the expected disruption to employees' everyday routines was minimal.

A poll carried out by ILM found that two thirds of UK businesses say the Olympics were less disruptive than expected, while almost half reported no impact on their organisation and 79 per cent of managers say that their jobs were not affected.

Furthermore, 48 per cent of managers claimed that the Olympics resulted in higher morale in the office, while four in ten allowed staff to watch the major sporting event in the office.

As a result, 37 per cent of managers reported being more productive and two-thirds said that their workplace bonded due to the shared experience.

Commenting on the report, Charles Elvin, chief executive of ILM, said it was good to see that many organisations also felt some benefits from the Olympics.

"It is encouraging to find that businesses took the opportunity to trial flexible working practices and those that did found their people were productive and motivated," he added.

Many firms 'unaware' of employment incentives

A significant proportion of the nation's employers are either unaware of or will not be making use of the government’s Youth Contract scheme, according to a new survey carried out by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC).

As thousands of young people leave education to look for jobs this summer, the REC's latest JobsOutlook survey of employers found that four out of five firms will not be making use of the programme.

The programme, which offers a £2,275 incentive to organisations that hire a young person, was unknown to 31 percent of employers polled, with an additional 36 percent stating that they knew of the scheme but didn't intend to act on it.

Another 11 per cent of respondents were unsure whether they had heard about the incentive scheme or would make use of it, with just 22 per cent of managers saying they intended to take on a young worker under the programme.

REC chief executive Kevin Green said it is clear that the government’s "good intentions" on youth employment are not hitting the mark if four out of five employers are not taking up the opportunity of a financial incentive to take on a young worker.

"So as more young people leave school and college to enter the already competitive labour market, it's vital that any government interventions are successful in supporting them into work," he explained.

Mr Green said the survey indicates that the coalition is not getting the message across to employers about why and how they should take part in initiatives such as the Youth Contract.

Successful salespeople 'solve problems beforehand'

The most successful salespeople are those who can often identify and solve customers' problems before they even meet them, rather than those who only rely on good relationships to make sales, it has been claimed.

Anthony Belloir, managing director at CEB, said the business landscape has changed to such an extent that the abundance of information made available to customers now means the majority of them have already decided what they want before even engaging with a salesperson.

He explained that this is a "radical shift" that has caused a dramatic reappraisal of the qualities of the successful salesperson.

His comments came after a survey of workers carried out by his organisation showed that this new type of salesperson - dubbed the 'challenger' - consistently outperformed other sales profiles by nearly 15 per cent.

This worker is defined by their ability to "teach, tailor their message and take control," which are all essential traits considering 57 per cent of business to business purchases have already been decided before the buyer even speaks to the salesperson.

"As our research shows, today's star sales performers are those who understand their customers' underlying problems and identify new and better means of solving them, often even before they are aware of the problem themselves," Mr Belloir added.

Young jobseekers 'must be adaptable'

Young people on the hunt for a new job need to be willing to adapt if they are to get a foot on the job ladder, it has been advised.

According to Andrew Pullman, managing director of People Risk Solutions, the market is obviously challenging because of ongoing economic problems, so the best advice for young people is to be prepared to be flexible.

"Don't be too fixed on what you want to do and if you are starting out in work, the most important thing is that you get a job in roughly the area that you are interested in. Be flexible and look at all sorts of different options and try different things," he recommended.

Mr Pullman said that people should not simply apply for two jobs and wait to see what happens, and instead try and look at the various different opportunities.

"A lot of young people tend to think that you only have to apply a couple of times and then they wait for that to come back whereas what they should be doing is trying to get lots of different opportunities and try to be flexible as well," he noted.

Older workers 'are highly valued'

Older people can prove to be extremely effective workers who offer a different dimension to younger members of staff, it has been pointed out.

Dr Dianne Bown-Wilson, chief executive of In My Prime, said that on a practical level there is no reason why older people cannot perform as well, or better, than younger individuals.

"In many organisations, particularly smaller businesses, older people often are highly valued as employees and encouraged to work for as long as they want. However, there continue to be many reasons why younger people may be chosen or preferred when recruiting new staff," she explained.

These include a company's brand image and customer base, for example if they are a youth-focused organisation, as well as the age of the existing workforce or team, and also the age of the person who is doing the recruiting or will be managing the person appointed.

"Cost may also be a factor if older, more experienced people are perceived as more expensive," Ms Bown-Wilson added.

Also, it may be the case that the specific role in question, particularly if it is a physically-demanding job, may be thought to be more suitable for a younger person, she noted.

Nevertheless, companies who do decide to employ older people will not be disappointed with the results, when their experience and knowledge is factored in, the expert concluded.

UK employers 'seeking customer service skills'

UK employers are currently seeking employees who have broad skillsets that include examples of customer service, one analyst has observed.

According to John Bell, policy editor at ESF-Works, when it comes to more specific qualities that employers are looking for, there remains a number of customer service gaps in the UK.

He pointed out that it is currently a very competitive marketplace, with many companies struggling, and this is often due to a lack of customer service skills throughout their organisation.

"The successful [companies] are the people who have got the staff that can really sell effectively and offer very high levels of customer service. That is also quite lacking," Mr Bell said.

Mr Bell added that sales and customer service skills are relevant across every sector, particularly in any kind of public customer-facing roles.

"Levels of customer service expectations on the part of consumers are ever-higher. I think it is something that isn't necessarily as available as it should be among the people that are actually having to deal with them," he concluded.

Flexible working 'should suit the individual'

The biggest thing that companies need to remember when implementing or considering flexible working is that different people need different things, one expert has said.

Tom Ball, managing director of NearDesk, explained that there is a danger to think that with flexible working, everyone must do the same thing but it can actually be interpreted differently by staff.

"Some people love working at home and have got somewhere productive where they can be at home, other people prefer running around, or they prefer to have somewhere productive where they can get to easily," he explained.

Mr Ball stated that there are some who actually want to come into the office every single day, so it is about being truly flexible.

The expert said one issue is that there is confusion between flexible working and being at home, and that important thing to take form this is that it is very important to be in a productive environment.

"If you can do that at a lower cost and in a better way for the employee, which is to be at home with less commuting, then that is ideal for firms," the expert added.

Reducing social media use 'would boost productivity'

Limiting workers' access to, and use of, social media would help to improve their productivity and the performance of the business as a whole, it has been suggested.

That is the finding of a new report carried out by employment law specialist Bibby Consulting & Support, which has warned that a firm with 100 staff could lose over 16 working hours every day if each person checked texts and Facebook posts for just ten minutes.

According to a study by the organisation, the main issue is that through the growth of social media applications, employees are constantly aware of personal issues as a result of status updates and tweets and so are more distracted from their jobs than ever before.

Bibby Consulting & Support managing director Michael Slade said that businesses have an "extremely simple" solution to hand, as they can create and implement a social media and IT policy.

"Companies need to get tough and implement a strict policy. Having a comprehensive set of rules will help staff remain focused and so will drive up productivity. The good news here is that this can be achieved incredibly quickly and at zero cost to businesses," he added.

Sporting summer 'may permanently change British working life'

The way in which British companies work may change permanently following the great sporting summer, according to a new survey which has indicated that flexible working will become increasingly commonplace in the months and years ahead.

Research carried out by Vodafone UK suggests that this summer's sporting events have boosted appetite for flexible working, with more than half of workers in London and Home Counties wanting to work flexibly on a more regular basis as a result of their experience during the Games.

Almost a quarter changed their normal working arrangements during the period, achieving better productivity as a result, while more than half of employers have either already enabled flexible working, or now appear to be more open to it.

Staff reported that their productivity had increased thanks mainly to fewer distractions and disruptions (34 per cent) and less time spent commuting (32 per cent).

Peter Boucher, commercial marketing director at Vodafone UK, said it is not surprising that the events of the last two weeks are emerging as a turning point in the way Britain is working.

"For employers and their staff, this has been a 'taster' for a different way of doing business. Many will have found that this can be just as effective - and often more so - than the traditional nine-to-five at your office desk," he explained.

Productivity is best measured by results achieved, rather than by the amount of time spent in the office each day, he added.

Job security continues to improve

The vast majority of UK staff are confident that their job is secure and will remain that way in the months ahead, according to the latest YouGov survey.

Job security was one of the major bright spots in this month's survey; the trend of improvement remains intact with 76 per cent reporting no change in the security of their job in August, compared with July, while eight per cent say they are in a more comfortable situation.

The labour market improvement is borne out in the official data, which shows the economy added almost 6,000 jobs in July.

The youngest survey respondents – those aged between 18 and 34 - reported the most improvement, and for the first time since the survey began, the net balance of those reporting improved job security is positive.

More respondents said that their job security had improved, compared with the number who said they felt less secure.

Improving job prospects likely reflects a pick-up in business activity, with 23 per cent of employees indicating that activity at their workplace is higher than in July, against just 17 per cent who say it is lower.

Meanwhile, 32 per cent envisage further improvement over the coming year, with just 15 per cent expecting deterioration.

Confidence and employment 'on the rise'

The nation's employment levels are rising in line with the confidence of the population, according to Reed, which has corroborated recent figures from the Office for National Statistics indicating that there has been a drop in UK unemployment.

Reed's latest figures show the number of permanent jobs taken during July was up 15 per cent on the month, with a boost seen across many sectors.

This has been driven in particular by property and construction and technology, which have seen major double-digit monthly increases, though education and retail have both also seen growth when compared to July 2011, the figures went on to highlight.

Cathy Dyos, regional managing director at Reed, told HR Magazine it is "positive news" that the permanent jobs market is faring so well.

"This rise could be a sign that employers are feeling more confident to actively invest in the future of their business or perhaps it is being driven by necessity, with employers looking for specific skill sets," she added.

Confidence is a major driver of economic growth, and businesses may be harnessing the boost from positive data and the feel good factor that has spread across the country, Ms Dyos added.

Small businesses 'looking for cheaper training options'

Smaller firms are increasingly sourcing affordable training alternatives in order to sidestep steep staff development costs, according to new research from the Forum of Private Business.

A new study carried out by the organisation shows that one in five firms use guides and handbooks, while other popular alternatives include supplier training, public sector training provided by bodies such as colleges or local authorities, and services from trusted advisers such as accountants.

Personal coaching and mentoring, online training services, ‘DIY' training including industry tips and analysing competitors are other popular options, while just three per cent use self-help videos.

Although 32 per cent of panellists believe the overall training and skills environment has improved recently, compared to 19 per cent who think it has deteriorated, costs are seen as the biggest barrier to providing training for employees, with 61 per cent of panellists reporting this.

Overall, 40 per cent say the availability of training is a barrier, 28 per cent indicate that the quality of courses is an issue and 22 per cent reported that time needed for training is an impediment.

Phil Orford, chief executive of the FPB, said that it is important that small businesses are able to access the right training for their staff at the right price, but this is often not the case at present.

"However, entrepreneurs are finding ways to provide the skills training their staff need that are more affordable than traditional routes such as expensive courses. This is particularly relevant given the training and guidance required in order to negotiate the minefield of red tape," he added.

UK unemployment falls again

UK unemployment is continuing to fall, against a backdrop of rising employment, the latest figures form the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveal.

The data has established that the employment rate for people aged between 16 and 64 was 71 per cent in the last quarter, which is a rise of 0.4 per cent on the January to March quarter.

Overall, the unemployment rate was eight per cent of the economically active population, which is a reduction of 0.2 per cent on the previous quarter, while there were 2.56 million unemployed people in all, which is down 46,000.

The figures also revealed that the inactivity rate for those aged between 16 and 64 was 22.6 per cent, down 0.3 per cent on the quarter, while there were 9.1 million economically inactive people of working age - a reduction of 117,000.

The ONS also shed light on salaries, with total pay including bonuses rising by 1.6 per cent on the year before and by 0.1 per cent on the three months to May 2012.

Furthermore, regular pay excluding bonuses rose by 1.8 per cent on a year earlier, which is unchanged on the quarter to May 2012.

Biggest office bugbears revealed

The major pet peeves of the nation's office workers have been highlighted in a new survey, which shows that putting a kiss in an email ranks as the number one bugbear

According to the poll, which was carried out by Staples, 66 per cent of people hold this view, while another irritant in UK workplaces is the failure to set up an out of office reply on an email account while a person is on holiday, which irked 65 per cent of respondents.

Other major bugbears included putting smiley faces on emails to clients (44 per cent), using terms of endearment, such as 'honey' or 'dear' when speaking to clients (54 per cent) and using abbreviations such as 'OMG' or 'LOL' (50 per cent).

Amee Chande, managing director of Staples UK MD, said that other people read out of office emails more than a person may think.

She suggested staff take this opportunity to communicate their own personality or that of the company by being creative, humorous or thoughtful.

"As long as you remember to include an alternative contact and the date you'll be back in the office, your clients and colleagues will appreciate that everyone is entitled to time off," Ms Chande added.

Unpaid overtime 'the norm' for many UK staff

Unpaid overtime has now become a permanent part of working life for many British staff, who are regularly putting in many extra hours a week to keep their employer happy, a new report reveals.

Research carried out buy Travelodge shows that a third of the nation's employees currently work 16 hours a week more than they did five years ago.

Overall, one in ten workers are cramming a whole extra week of unpaid work into their weekly schedules, with the average worker now putting in 9.1 extra unpaid hours every week, which is the equivalent of £5,276.18 in unpaid time every year.

A third of workers now spend fewer than six hours relaxing at the weekend, while six in ten head into each weekend knowing that they will not be able to get work out of their minds at all.

A further increasing trend is for work on the go, with one in ten staff regularly interrupting important conversations with friends and family to check their work email and half of staff missing family occasions to take care of work matters at some point.

Corinne Sweet, psychologist and author of Change Your Life with CBT, commented: "This research is certainly a wake-up call for us to switch off our gadgets and get away from the clutter, pressure and stress of working life."

Business confidence 'will pick up'

Confidence levels among the nation's employers will definitely pick up, and this is already occurring in many sectors, according to one sector body.

Phil McCabe, spokesman from the Forum of Private Business, said it is just a matter of time before this occurs, and there will be a number of variables on the way.

"If you are optimistic, you would say that there are signs there of the green shoots of recovery, in traditional areas [such as] manufacturing. Certainly recent reports have shown an upturn in trade," he explained.

A lot will depend on what happens to free up finance for small firms with regards to making sure invoices are paid, as well as the restoration of affordable commercial lending, provision of alternatives to traditional banks, and getting a toehold in finance markets, he explained.

Mr McCabe said another factor is what governmental policies are introduced in the months ahead to boost confidence.

"An important area is helping these businesses in traditional sectors such as manufacturing realise that sales and marketing is a crucial and occasionally undervalued side of business activity," he added.

Bearing these things in mind will be key to business success in the months ahead, the expert predicted.

Bureaucracy impeding UK firms 'must be removed'

The red tape that is currently holding back many UK organisations needs to be slashed in order to enable growth, it has been claimed.

According to Chris Yates, finance director at Nexus, the government can be doing more to help SMEs in difficult financial circumstances.

The coalition must first continue with its programme of reducing public expenditure, as the financial markets are closely monitoring the UK's budget deficit reduction programme and, in order to maintain confidence, it is key that this course is maintained.

This will result in lower interest rates creating positive conditions for growth, though the government must also reappraise its approach to UK corporate investment and reaffirm its commitment to ensure viable businesses can raise the finance they need to start up and grow, the expert noted.

"It is vital that focus is targeted at generating additional growth in the economy and through stimulating both corporate investment and corporate job creation through tax breaks," Mr Yates said.

In addition, the layers of bureaucracy that impact SMEs must be stripped to enable companies to focus on building their businesses rather than overbearing form filling, he concluded.

Jobseeker confidence 'is soaring'

Jobseeker confidence has expanded exponentially over the past 12 months, according to a new study that canvassed the opinions of people from across the UK.

According to the poll, carried out by TotalJobs, the number of unemployed people confident in finding a job in the next year has jumped from 51 per cent in 2011 to 64 per cent this year.

Furthermore, the percentage of unemployed people out of work for longer than 12 months has dropped by two per cent to 16 per cent.

Flexibility may be one reason why prospects have been enhanced, with seven out of ten of those surveyed prepared to take a job they are over-qualified for, while 43 per cent would accept a pay cut and 63 per cent are willing to take on part-time work.

John Salt, website director at TotalJobs.com, said that jobseekers are clearly starting to see rays of hope amongst the gloom of the ongoing economic crisis.

"The recruitment market is feeling rejuvenated, with UK plc and jobseekers finally waking up to the need to be flexible, and businesses are now willing to accommodate part-time work to retain good staff or cut costs," he added.

Sectors with shortages 'most likely to recruit'

The industries and sectors that currently have the greatest amount of skills shortages will be the ones that broaden their recruitment intentions in the coming months, it has been claimed.

That is the opinion of Kevin Green, chairman of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, who told the BBC's Wake up to Money podcast that the employment situation in the UK will depend greatly on the satisfaction of these criteria.

"Sectors most likely to recruit are those wherever there's a shortage of skills and talent, so industries such as engineering, oil and gas, IT, as well as some of the catering sectors," he explained.

Mr Green said that, in many cases, it tends to be the professional and managerial positions where people do not have the skills and capability to do the jobs which are available and so the finest candidates will be strongly in contention.

The expert acknowledged that the UK has had a "fantastic run" in terms of the labour market, which has done "incredibly well" thanks to falling unemployment and rising employment even during an economic downturn.

Irregular shift work 'can impact health'

People who work irregular hours outside of the normal nine to five shift are at an increased risk of suffering from health problems, according to one expert.

Dan Hackam, associate professor at Western University in Ontario, Canada, said that this is defined as employment in any business that is not a regular daytime schedule, so approximately between the hours of nine to five.

"That could include evening shifts, night shifts, rotating shifts, split shifts, on call shifts, casual shifts, 24-hour shifts, irregular schedules and any other non-day schedules," he explained.

According to the specialist, studies carried out at his university found that shift work was associated with a relative risk increase of 23 per cent for myocardial infarction (heart attacks), and a five per cent increased risk of ischemic stroke, while coronary events increased with a risk ratio increase of 24 per cent.

This is a "pretty significant" impact at population level because shift work is such a prevalent employment pattern, Professor Hackam said.

"As we move more and more towards a 24/7 society, with services open throughout the night and other odd hours, particularly in urban and industrialised countries, we think this is going to be even more of a problem in the future," he concluded.

Managing punctuality 'cuts costs and boosts productivity'

Employers who effectively manage attendance not only save money, but also improve effectiveness, according to one expert who has outlined what should be in an absence policy.

Adrian Wakeling, senior guidance manager at the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service, notification of absence is essential, with many companies requiring an absent employee to speak to their manager within an hour of their normal start date and outline discuss the nature of the illness, as well as a likely return date and any workplace issues that need dealing with.

Also, evidence of incapacity is necessary, as employees can usually use 'self-certification' forms for the first seven days' absence, but after that time a statement of Fitness for Work is required from the GP.

As far as the fit note and return to work discussions are concerned, the employee and their manager may need to discuss a possible phased return to work or altered duties, while the manager should check they are actually able to return and offer them help, where appropriate.

Mr Wakeling added: "Many companies have 'trigger points' for further action. For example, frequent short-term absences or a long-term absence may lead to a more formal review to look at the employee's overall wellbeing and attendance record."

When it comes to sick pay, the manager should refer to the sick scheme to give details of pay while absent from work, while it is also worth remembering that absences relating to the disability of an employee or to pregnancy should be kept separate from sickness absence records, he concluded.

Line managers 'must show knowledge of their trade'

Line managers who are looking to impress have been told of the qualities that they should look to display to employees.

James Scouller, executive coach and author of The Three Levels of Leadership: How to Develop Your Leadership Presence, Knowhow and Skill, underlined that technical competence in their chosen profession is particularly vital.

"Employees must believe that the manager knows what to do and how to do it - that he or she will make things happen," he explained.

On top of this, a line manager should attempt to display a sense of direction for a company which will motivate staff members to work to their best ability.

Genuineness is another ability that Mr Scouller has encouraged line managers to display around the workplace.

This can be achieved by serving a collective purpose for a company, being truthful about any issues or problems and displaying means of action instead of just talking about making changes.

His advice echoes that of Carol Wilson, managing director of Performancecoachtraining.com, who stated that employees want a line manager who has a fair attitude and is considerate.

The extent of flexible working in the UK this summer revealed

The full extent of the flexible working strategies being put in place by companies over the Olympic Games has been revealed.

Research carried out by O2 Pocket Hotspot revealed that there has been a 50 per cent rise in the number of people conducting work flexibly during London's busiest period of the year.

On top of this, a 30 per cent increase was noticed in staff members who have opted to work from home during the duration of London 2012.

Gary Booker, GM consumer at O2, commented: "This week we've truly become a nation of mobile workers. For huge numbers of people, where they work doesn't matter if they are productive, [they] have embraced that philosophy."

The O2 Pocket Hotspot study has also highlighted that flexible working seems to be becoming more popular in general.

Outside of the attractions of the summer, 59 per cent of employees state that they will work flexibly on occasion and 52 per cent said they work from home on regular intervals.

Separate research by Harvey Nash and London Chamber of Commerce and Industry recently found that four in five firms in London are giving their staff members a helping hand by teleworking during the Olympic Games.

Older people 'dominating Britain's academic industry'

More needs to be done in order to help "new blood" find their way into jobs in the UK's academic industry.

Geoff Whitty, the former director of the Institute of Education at the University of London, has delivered the message to Times Higher Education following research conducted by the Higher Education Funding Council for England.

According to the study, the number of academics under the age of 30 employed at universities across England has dropped from 12,205 in 1995/96 to 10,335 in 2010/11.

Over the same length of time, the number of academics who are 60 years old or over has increased by 3,955 to 11,160.

On top of this, the overall staff levels in the British academics industry has actually grown by almost a third over the study period.

Professor Whitty believes that universities need to make more "exit routes" available to older academics in order to balance out the age range once more.

Meanwhile, young graduates looking to impress have been encouraged by Dan Hawes, co-founder of the Graduate Recruitment Bureau, to demonstrate a broad skillset and show they are trustworthy and committed in order to boost their chances of landing a top job in whatever career they choose.

Aaron Wallis offer graduate sales roles across a wide range of industry sectors. For Employers, Aaron Wallis offer a unique Assessment Centre solution and graduate Sales recruitment service backed by a 12 month rebate period.

More job offers available in UK, research finds

There has been a boost in the number of job opportunities made available across the UK, new figures have revealed.

According to the results of the latest Reed Job Index, there were 13 per cent more jobs posted online in July 2012 than there were in the same month last year.

On top of this, the number of job opportunities last month is a 2.5 per cent increase on the figures posted by the Reed Job Index in June.

The analysis has provided good news for the regions of the UK hardest hit by the recession as well, with a six per cent rise in job postings seen in north-east England. The West Midlands also saw a five per cent rise in job opportunities.

Martin Warnes, the managing director of Reed.co.uk, stated: "The Reed Job Index has been reporting an improving jobs market since the third quarter of 2011 and it's great to see this positive trend continuing this month."

Results of the new Reed Job Index were revealed soon after the Recruitment and Employment Confederation's latest JobsOutlook survey found that 64 per cent of employers are looking to boost their permanent staff numbers in the next three months.

Compulsory careers guidance 'a wise move'

The introduction of compulsory careers guidance in the nation's schools is a step in the right direction as far as ensuring the right people are placed into the right jobs is concerned.

That is the opinion of Chris Wilford, policy and PR advisor at the Recruitment and Employment confederation, who said that young people need all the help they can get to enter the jobs market, through coordinated action from government, business and educationalists, as well as specialist recruitment agencies.

"With this in mind, the requirement for schools to secure access to independent and impartial careers advice for their students from September is a step in the right direction," he explained.

Mr Wilford said that the key is to address educational and career preparedness for the long-term health of the labour market as well as the individual young people.

With the introduction of the statutory responsibility of schools to secure access to independent and impartial careers advice from September, it looks like government is starting to listen.

His comments came after REC chief executive Kevin Green, speaking to the Work and Pensions Select Committee last month, underlined the need to promote practical experience and awareness of the world of work and argued that this is an area where government policy seems to be going in the "wrong direction".

Awareness of psychometric testing benefits 'on the rise'

Awareness of the benefits of psychometric testing among professionals and managers is continuing to grow, according to one expert who has acknowledged it as a useful recruitment tool.

Martin Reed, chairman and chief executive of Thomas International, told HR Magazine that psychometric testing is known for multi-purpose, streamlined and cost-effective assessments.

"It can help businesses maximise the potential of their staff, from recruitment right through the lifecycle of an employee, encompassing training, development, staff satisfaction, retention and team efficiency," he explained.

The expert said that it is no longer the preserve of "dry academia", with psychometric testing finally making its way into the business arena in a way that line managers and smaller companies can relate to.

Mr Reed said it is encouraging to see smaller businesses being "empowered" through their new experience of psychometrics and predicted this to increase in the months and years ahead as the benefits of the process become more widely known.

With consultants that are British Psychological Society (BPS) level A and level B accredited Aaron Wallis are able to offer a wide range of psychometric tools, personality tests, aptitude tests and ability tests.

Academic achievement 'no guarantee of recruitment success'

People are not guaranteed to land top jobs simply because they have excelled in academia, one expert has highlighted.

That is the opinion of Steve Bulman, business development manager at Intergence, who said that having a good educational background is always preferable.

However, people also need to gain work experience, sell themselves as an intern and try other proactive approaches that will demonstrate that they have the application to do the work required.

"Continuous self study and an appetite for learning is important. Some organisations will partner with training companies to identify top performers and engage them on apprenticeship schemes or similar," he explained.

One example that Mr Bulman pointed to was Cable & Wireless, which implemented an apprenticeship scheme that has been hugely successful after identifying there was an ageing workforce and no natural succession.

It comes after Dan Hawes, co-founder of the Graduate Recruitment Bureau, recently said that people hoping to stand out from the crowd and boost their chances of recruitment success can do so without necessarily demonstrating amazing academic prowess, as long as they can prove that they work hard and have on-the-job learning experience.

UK employment costs 'the lowest in western Europe'

The cost of employing a person in the UK is lower than in any other country in western Europe, the latest statistics suggest.

Research carried out by Towers Watson for its annual Global 50 Remuneration Planning Report shows that the mandatory costs and taxes associated with employing people in Britain are lower than in the likes of France, Spain and Germany.

Typically, it costs just £3,940 to employ a middle-ranking professional earning £33,000 in the UK, while the equivalent employee in France, who would be earning €40,000, costs £14,200 to employ.

The second and third lowest costs were observed in the Netherlands and Germany, with employer expenditure of £5,250 and £6,200, respectively.

Darryl Davis, senior consultant in Towers Watson's Data Service division, said the report shows that there is a "big difference" in costs for employers across western Europe.

"It appears that the UK is amongst the most business-friendly countries in the region on the basis that the tax burden on companies is the most favourable," he added.
