Kevin Green, chief executive of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, said the fact that the figures are another indication of some stability in the jobs market.
The data, published by the Office for National Statistics, showed that there were 8,000 fewer unemployed people in the UK between May and July, compared with the previous three-month period.
Mr Green noted: "It fits with the feedback from recruitment professionals in terms increasing hiring activity in a number of sectors."
He added that the government needs to "build better bridges" into the world of work and to drive a "radical shake-up" of the support and guidance currently being offered.
Last week, John Hannett, general secretary of the union Usdaw, said that companies which make a commitment to retain staff will "reap dividends" in the long term when they fully escape the effects of the recession.
