IT productivity 'linked to good management'

Those in IT sales jobs are likely to be more productive if they receive good management, a new report has suggested.

According to the study, conducted and published by the IT Job Board, the single biggest negative factor on productivity is lack of clarity in instructions for the task in hand, whilst the biggest single motivator for productivity is the "satisfaction of finishing a project," with 85 per cent of workers pointing to this.

Alex Farrell, managing director of the IT Job Board, commented: "Given that 84 per cent of respondents acknowledge that taking a break regularly does make them more productive, it would seem good practice for management to encourage this."

However, he noted that it is clear people in IT sales jobs and other parts of the sector feel that having choice in the workplace is even more importance than regular breaks.

Earlier this month, Maggie Berry, managing director of womenintechnology.co.uk, said that there is a wide range of IT careers available for candidates prepared to look.

For both hardware and software sales jobs call an Aaron Wallis IT sales recruitment consultant. The Aaron Wallis IT sales recruitment service includes skills testing, personality questionnaires and 12 months rebate as standard.

UK skills systems 'need to be simplified'

The skills system in the UK needs to be simplified to plug the country's productivity gap and boost the sales recruitment sector, an industry body has stated.

According to Steve Huxham, chairman of the Recruitment Society, skills consultation is "essential" if the UK is to simplify the skills system.

His comments followed the publication of a report by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development which suggested that efforts to close the UK's productivity gap with its major international competitors are being fatally undermined by a leadership and people management skills deficit.

"What you should do is identify the need at all levels, whether it is supporting management development or vocational learning, and keep that very simple and guide employers in how to do it," Mr Huxham explained.

He added that there has to be a private sector initiative which is led by employers and supported by professional bodies.

Construction sector 'can boost UK employment'

The construction sector can be responsible for boosting employment in the UK by creating construction sales jobs, it has been suggested.

Steve Turner, head of communications at the Home Builders Federation, said that it is vital that the skills needed to secure the future of the industry are developed.

The expert made the comments after a report by the cross-industry Construction Apprenticeship Task Force (CCATF) claimed that the government must help the construction industry employ young people to avoid a future skills gap.

"Undoubtedly we need to find a way of ensuring we have got the skills that are required for the future. If you look at house building, you have got a very challenging agenda including zero carbon homes that are going to need a skilled workforce," Mr Turner explained.

He added that the building industry itself will have a part to play in creating the construction sales jobs and other roles, but the government also needs to play a part.

The Aaron Wallis Construction and M&E sales team offer many construction sales jobs across the sector. For employers Aaron Wallis offer a construction sales recruitment service that offers 12 month rebate and psychometric profiling within a single fixed recruitment price.

Apprenticeships 'can boost sales recruitment'

Boosting the number of apprentices in the UK may be the best way to stimulate the sales recruitments sector, the Liberal Democrats have claimed.

At the party's annual conference in Liverpool, it outlined how public sector cuts and future skills needs were of "direct relevance" to the sales recruitment industry and that the use of apprenticeships could solve some of the issues facing the jobs market as a whole.

Fringe sessions at the event outlined how high-level apprenticeships could help to stimulate sectors such as accounting, financial services and engineering and received the approval of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC).

Chris Richards, REC policy advisor, said there were some "extremely useful" debates, adding that the organisation supports specific recommendations such as the development of high-level apprenticeships.

"The recruitment industry will continue to be a major voice on future skills needs as well as on practical measures needed to rev up the UK's job creation machine," he added.

Sales recruitment 'on the rise' in Scotland

There has been a sales recruitment rise in Scotland, with other sectors also experiencing a boost, but one expert has said that more needs to be done to ensure continued growth in the jobs market.

Commenting on the upward trend and on the immediate priorities for the Scottish jobs market, Lisa Boutineau, regional director for the Recruitment and Employment Confederation in Scotland, said that work still needs to be done to boost the labour market in the country.

However, she pointed to the recent rise in sales recruitment and other sectors as evidence that Scotland is turning a corner.

She explained: "As an industry, we are working with employers and education providers to help build better bridges into the world of work and to spearhead a radical shake-up in the support and guidance offered to the increasing number of jobseekers."

It comes after a survey carried out by Workmonitor and seen by the Recruiter indicates that 75 per cent of employees currently feel that they could comfortably land sales jobs if they applied.

Expert offers CV hints to applicants

An expert has issued CV hints to people applying for a new position, advising that they omit any old qualifications which they believe are irrelevant.

Responding to a reader letter in the Financial Times which questioned whether old O-level results were relevant on a CV, Geoff Fawcett, operations director for Hays financial markets, said that the inclusion of an O-level qualification needs to be pertinent to the job being applied for.

"Leave your O-levels out unless it's the last qualification you gained. I don't think there's any need to replace it with anything unless you've done more relevant courses, qualifications or training," he advised.

Mr Fawcett added that those hoping for financial services recruitment should follow the general rule of keeping a CV brief and to the point in order to highlight key attributes.

Further CV hints were recently issued by Carl Andrew, writing for the Guardian, who said it is important for students to consider the industry they are applying for and how the experience they have will be relevant to their application.

Social media 'must be embraced' by businesses

It is essential that recruiters utilise social media, as there is no escaping the fact that it is becoming a key part of hiring managers' regimes, it has been claimed.

Andrew Girdwood, head of strategy for Bigmouthmedia, said that social media affects businesses "whether they like it or not", so it is vital to develop a strategy which can harness it.

"The more successful a campaign, the more social it is, so social media is incredibly important. The challenge is to realise that and start working in that social way," he said.

Mr Girdwood added that companies which are "switched on" to the possibilities of social media, such as recruitment and advertising, will benefit far more than those which are reluctant to adopt it.

His comments came after a recent poll by Daryl Willcox Publishing found that over half of companies used social media, and 35 per cent of these said they posted updates every day to platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter.

Govt 'should be involved' with construction recruitment

The government needs to play more of a role when it comes to recruiting in the construction industry, one industry expert has advised.

Steve Turner, head of communications at the Home Builders Federation, said that the coalition needs to place more of a focus on getting young people into the construction sector if it is to flourish in the coming years.

His comments follow the publication of a report by the Cross-Industry Construction Apprenticeship Task Force, which claimed that the government must help the construction industry employ young people if a skills gap is to be avoided in future years.

Mr Turner commented: "Undoubtedly we need to find a way of ensuring we have got the skills that are required for the future. If you look at house building, you have got a very challenging agenda including zero carbon homes that are going to need a skilled workforce."

Qualifications 'the key to career success'

Jobseekers can significantly improve their chances of securing a position by ensuring they have qualifications in the field they are applying for, one source has stated.

The Home Learning College pointed out that 54 per cent of jobseekers are currently considering further study in the sector they are hoping to enter in order to boost their employment prospects.

It comes after a report carried out by the organisation found that 32 per cent of people hoping to move into an industry believe that a lack of relevant qualifications is holding them back.

Dave Snow, academic director at Home Learning College, said the volume of applications for each vacancy means that employers are paying greater attention to candidates' educational history.

"Ambitious jobseekers are recognising that targeted vocational qualifications can add real value to their CV, helping to underpin and expand existing skills and experience," he added.

Recently, Carl Andrew, writing for the Guardian, said it is important for students to consider the industry they are applying for and how the experience they have will be relevant to their application.

Economy to grow in 2011, CBI predicts

The UK's economy will grow steadily in 2011, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has claimed.

According to the latest economic forecast by the organisation, the UK economy will grow by 1.6 per cent throughout 2010, up from 1.3 per cent predicted in its previous forecast in June.

The rise is largely attributed to companies rebuilding their stocks and employing new staff as they move out of the recession - a trend set to continue in 2011, according to Ian McCafferty, CBI chief economic adviser.

We expect exports to grow at a faster rate than imports, with net trade making a positive contribution to GDP growth during the coming 15 months," he explained.

The CBI rates also showed that UK exports are expected to grow by 3.5 per cent in 2010 and 6.4 per cent in 2011, with net trade expected to make a positive contribution to GDP growth rates throughout the forecast period.

Senior executives 'being highly sought' in 2010

There is a growing demand for senior executives who can add experience to a company, according to a new report.

The latest survey findings by Ipsos MORI for the Interim Management Association (IMA) show that the use of interim managers has increased by nine per cent over the first two quarters of 2010.

According to the data, the proportion of private sector interim assignments has increased to 52 per cent, which highlights how experience is vital to firms escaping the recession, according to Paul Botting, chair of the IMA and managing director of Odgers Interim Commercial.

"Our latest results demonstrate clearly how senior, experienced executives are being sought to lead and change organisations in business-critical operations," he explained.

Earlier this month, Claudio Da Rold, vice president at research analyst Gartner, said that firms are beginning to increase expenditure as they shrug off the effects of the economic downturn and managers become more confident.

Sales jobs see recruitment boost

There has been a sharp rise in the number of people moving into sales jobs, according to the latest survey.

Data compiled by Hays shows that 55 per cent of sales mangers claim that there has been a rise in the number of applications for sales jobs since last year, while 58 per cent of staff already working in the sector are planning on a long-term career within it.

According to the statistics, 35 per cent of workers in the industry are now educated to degree level, something which does not surprise Geoff Sims, managing director of the organisation.

"A clear career path is always a strong draw for graduates and it is increasingly being recognised that [the profession] offers excellent opportunities for progression," he stated.

It comes after Kevin Green, chief executive of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, said that the recent fall in UK unemployment is good news for the recruitment sector and is an indication of stability.

Aaron Wallis are a Milton Keynes Sales Recruitment agency with a unique service offering that includes 12 months rebate. Psychometric profiling and online skills testing are also included within a fixed recruitment price.

Fall in unemployment 'good news' for recruitment sector

The reduction in the number of unemployed people in the UK is good news for the recruitment sector, one expert has observed.

Kevin Green, chief executive of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, said the fact that the figures are another indication of some stability in the jobs market.

The data, published by the Office for National Statistics, showed that there were 8,000 fewer unemployed people in the UK between May and July, compared with the previous three-month period.

Mr Green noted: "It fits with the feedback from recruitment professionals in terms increasing hiring activity in a number of sectors."

He added that the government needs to "build better bridges" into the world of work and to drive a "radical shake-up" of the support and guidance currently being offered.

Last week, John Hannett, general secretary of the union Usdaw, said that companies which make a commitment to retain staff will "reap dividends" in the long term when they fully escape the effects of the recession.

Half of accountants 'planning a job move'

Half of all accountants have revealed that they are considering changing jobs in the next 12 months, according to a new poll.

The survey, carried out by Careers in Audit, shows that, out of more than 600 accountants, half of them admitted to being in the process of looking for a new job, with this set to rise to three quarters in the next six months.

According to the research, nearly four in ten accountants felt they missed out on a promotion because of the recession, and are now eager to forge ahead with their careers.

The majority of accountants are very satisfied with their profession, however, with eight out of ten likely to remain in the sector for the rest of their career.

"There might be a new job afoot, or even the prospect of working in a new country, but a vast majority still view the accountancy profession as the best career path for them," the report states.

Earlier this month, accountancy body ICAEW and accountants Grant Thornton compiled a study for the second quarter of 2010 which revealed that UK financial services firms are expecting to employ a greater number of workers in the coming months.

As a recruitment provider to many of the UK's major banks, mortgage lenders and building societies Aaron Wallis have a deserved reputation within Financial Services recruitment. Employer commitment 'will pay back dividends'

Companies which make a commitment to retain staff will "reap dividends" in the long term when they fully escape the effects of the recession, one expert has stated.

John Hannett, general secretary of the union Usdaw, said that companies should strive to keep hold of their best staff through difficult times, as they are much more likely to benefit from employee loyalty when the effects of the economic downturn are shaken off.

His comments follow the publication of figures by the Office for National Statistics, which showed that the employment rate for those aged from 16 to 64 for the three months to July 2010 was 70.7 per cent, rising by 0.4 on the previous quarter.

Mr Hannett stated: "We have got to be vigilant in studying the figures and we have got to encourage employers to retain as many staff as they can because that kind of commitment will then pay back dividends when they feel they have been treated fairly."

He added that, in the private sector in particular, companies are beginning to show signs of escaping the recession are taking on new staff as they expand.

Jobseekers 'have great opportunities'

There are currently many excellent opportunities on the market for jobseekers, one sector expert has stated, noting that the recession has not had the impact that some people feared.

Jane Artess, director of research for the Higher Education Careers Services Unit, said that people willing to put in the time to search for a job opportunity will find that there are plenty of options open to them.

According to the specialist, graduates in particular often get disheartened when they feel that there are no opportunities available, but she offered reassurance to this demographic.

"The thing to do is enthuse people about careers and help them to understand that there are some really good opportunities out there despite the recession," Ms Artess added.

It comes after Maggie Berry, managing director of womenintechnology.co.uk, said that there are plenty of diverse and interesting opportunities in the IT sector for jobseekers willing to search for them.

Rise of social media in recruiting 'not a seismic shift'

The continuing rise of social media in the recruitment sector has not led to a "seismic shift" in the way in which candidates are targeted and hired, one expert has noted.

Speaking at a Recruitment Society meeting in London, Jon Porter, managing director of TMP Worldwide, said that social media applications may allow more direct targeting of candidates, but these individuals must first be found before these tactics are employed.

He noted: "Does it represent a seismic change? No. But I believe that the market is getting faster and faster, and we are delivering a more and more sophisticated message to a more and more sophisticated audience."

Geoff Newman, chief executive of Recruitment Genius, said that social media in recruitment works well for techno-savvy people, but it has failed to exceed some of the hype which industry leaders were generating.

Earlier this year, Di Forster, director at SEO Junkies, told Internet World that companies using sales recruitment and people in sales jobs need to ensure that they embrace social media as a marketing tool, whether they like it or not.

Govt reveals unemployment has fallen

The level of unemployment in the UK has fallen, according to the latest government jobs figures.

According to the data, the number of unemployed people in the UK fell by 8,000 to 2.47 million in the three months to July, which means that overall unemployment in the country remains at 7.8 per cent.

The figures, published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), also show that the number of people in employment increased by 286,000, which is the biggest quarterly rise since 1971.

According to the ONS, this number was largely driven by a rise in the number of part-time workers in the UK.

In addition, average weekly earnings excluding bonuses rose 1.8 per cent in the three months to July compared with a 1.6 per cent rise in the June survey, the ONS revealed.

Data published in the Recruitment and Employment Confederation and KPMG Report on Jobs last week showed that both permanent and temporary placements increased in the UK last month, marking the tenth consecutive month of growth.

Financial services pay 'is on the rise'

The rate of pay for financial services staff has risen considerably in 2010, particularly over the summer, new figures have suggested.

According to statistics from Astbury Marsden, junior staff have benefitted the most in recent months, with some employees seeing their wages rise by as much as 20 per cent.

Jonathan Nicholson, managing director at Astbury Marsden, said that junior financial services staff are catching up with seniors as companies begin to accelerate out of the recession and reward workers with pay rises reflecting their efforts.

"Up to now the big jumps in pay created by the recovery have gone to the more senior staff," he noted.

A recent survey among financial services firms carried out by Reed showed that demand for new staff remained steady among most companies in August and even increased in some organisations, despite the summer usually being a quiet time for recruitment in the sector.

Candidates 'offered a huge range' of IT careers

There is a wide range of IT careers available for candidates prepared to look, one expert on the subject has suggested.

Maggie Berry, managing director of womenintechnology.co.uk, said that one of the issues with the IT sector is that the variety of roles available is not well-known.

"There's a huge range of different careers in IT and they could be quite different, but they are still under this one umbrella of working in information technology. There are so many different things in it that it is quite difficult for people to get their head around," she explained.

Ms Berry's comments follow the publication of a report by the website, which claimed that more could still be done to improve the profile of IT as a career choice.

However, Ms Berry said that the IT industry is only likely to get bigger in the coming years, leading to job creation and more diverse roles being created.

For both hardware and software sales jobs call an Aaron Wallis IT sales recruitment consultant. The Aaron Wallis IT sales recruitment service includes skills testing, personality questionnaires and 12 months rebate as standard.

Graduates issued CV tips

Graduates seeking their first major job after university have been issued with a number of tips to boost their chances of success.

Carl Andrew, writing for the Guardian, said it is important for students to consider the industry they are applying for and how the experience they have will be relevant to their application.

He pointed out that many employers will be less interested in university activities such as appreciation societies and more likely to favour a candidate who has served on a debating or politics team.

Likewise, the writer extolled the virtues of unpaid work, as it can add valuable experience to a CV while being rather easy to gain.

Mr Andrew added: "It is true that the bigger the name of the company where you do work experience the better it looks on your CV. But that does not necessarily mean you will gain any useful experience with a big-name organisation."

Confidence continues to rise in financial sector

Confidence is continuing to rise in the financial services sector as more jobs are created throughout the industry, according to the latest report.

A poll conducted by services provider Giant Group shows that optimism in the sector, particularly among those in IT jobs, has risen considerably in the last few months.

When asked which sector of the economy would create most IT jobs over the next 12 months, the biggest proportion of staff said the financial services sector.

This is in comparison to a similar study carried out at the same time last year, when only 14.8 per cent of workers believed that the financial services sector was the best place for growth.

A recent survey among financial services firms carried out by Reed showed that demand for new staff remained steady among most companies in August and even increased in some organisations, despite the summer usually being a quiet time for recruitment in the sector.

Govt reveals construction output rose in Q2

Construction output rose in the UK in the second quarter of the year, according to the latest government statistics.

Figures published by the Office for National Statistics reveal that total volume of construction output in the second quarter of 2010 rose by 8.6 per cent compared with the first quarter of 2010.

This can be partly attributed to the impact of the poor weather on the previous quarter's output, according to ONS, which also revealed that the amount of new projects being created rose by 9.8 per cent compared with the previous quarter.

"The total volume of construction output in the second quarter of 2010 rose by 9.1 per cent compared to the same quarter in 2009. All new work increased by 14.2 per cent and repair and maintenance increased by one per cent," it said.

A report by the British Chambers of Commerce last week noted that quarterly growth remained in positive territory in the first two quarters of 2010, which meant that employment prospects across the UK rose and staff numbers were both boosted.

The Aaron Wallis Construction and M&E sales team offer many construction sales jobs across the sector. For employers Aaron Wallis offer a construction sales recruitment service that offers 12 month rebate and psychometric profiling within a single fixed recruitment price.

Sales candidate confidence 'is on the rise'

Sales recruitment candidates are becoming more confident about landing the role they are applying for, a new poll has suggested.

A survey carried out by Workmonitor and seen by the Recruiter indicates that 75 per cent of employees currently feel that they could comfortably land a new sales job if they applied.

In addition, 68 per cent feel that they could move to another company but do a very similar job without encountering too much difficulty.

According to the report, confidence is particularly high among firms in Europe, as the effects of the economic downturn subside and companies begin to increase their recruitment drives.

Last week, data published in the Recruitment and Employment Confederation and KPMG Report on Jobs showed that both permanent and temporary placements increased in the UK last month.

Brevity and branding 'the key to sales recruitment success'

Job-seeking executives have been advised that brevity, branding and networking are key when it comes to landing a new position.

That is the advice being issued by James Wren, general manager of search products and user experience at JobServe, who told Recruiter that in today's increasingly competitive marketplace, CVs should highlight experience, demonstrate ability to be a problem-solver, and offer examples and data that underscore an individual value proposition.

He pointed out that this is the best way of generating interviews and opportunities, rather than the traditional CV which "synthesises" an executive's experience into a bulleted, two-page document.

Mr Wren told the source: "To create more career options, dedicate a portion of every day to building relationships with contacts outside of your current company. The best networkers embody the philosophy that it is better to give than to receive."

Recently, John Salt, director of Totaljobs.com, said it is essential that jobseekers are flexible in their approach to sales recruitment if they are to enhance their prospects of securing a position.

Apprenticeships 'a wise choice' for UK organisations

Apprenticeships can provide UK organisations and hopeful job hunters with valuable employment experience, one sector body has noted.

In its new report The State of Apprenticeships in 2010, the Apprenticeship Ambassadors' Network (AAN) said that they have never been more highly valued by employers and young people, with numbers and completion rates at an all-time high.

However the organisations noted that many competitor countries are doing better when it comes to utilising and developing the skills of apprentices and the nation needs to see what their criteria for success is.

Sir Roy Gardner, chairman of the AAN, commented: "We wanted to draw comparisons on the planning and delivery of apprenticeships, with a particular focus on employer participation and involvement. We cannot be complacent and we need to know what lessons can be learnt."

Paul Davis, managing director of Perspective, recently said that people looking for sales recruitment opportunities should consider gaining skills on an apprenticeship, no matter what age they are.

Training programmes 'can stimulate UK businesses'

New training programmes can help to stimulate UK businesses in the private sector, one organisation has claimed.

The Forum of Private Business (FPB) said that with private sector organisations clamouring to form new Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs), new bodies should focus on providing training as well as guidance on the support that businesses need.

Phil Orford, chief executive of the FPB, said that services provided by bidding authorities should include localised business support, supplier matching and inward investment, export preparations, regional infrastructure investment and skills and training information and promotion.

"Independence is key when it comes to delivering information, advice and guidance about the help that is already easily available to business owners through dedicated support organisations in the private sector," he explained.

A recent report by Hays Senior Finance showed that, while multimillions of pounds are being spent on staff training across the UK, nearly one in seven organisations admit that they have no measurements in place to assess the impact of their programmes.

Based in Milton Keynes, Aaron Wallis are a recruitment and sales training business committed to sales excellence.

Report: Permanent placements increase in August

The number of people in permanent work placements increased again in August, according to the latest recruitment figures.

Data published in the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG Report on Jobs shows that both permanent and temporary placements increased in the UK last month, marking the tenth consecutive month of growth.

Bernard Brown, partner and head of business services at KPMG, said that demand for staff is particularly growing in the private sector.

"The big question is whether the private sector can create new jobs in sufficient numbers and quickly enough to offset the downturn in the public sector," Mr Brown explained.

It comes after research carried out by global analyst Gartner revealed that the majority of European organisations are planning to outsource more frequently in the coming months.

According to the data, 53 per cent of firms will outsource more in 2010, based on the opinions of decision makers in 206 organisations across the continent.

Employment prospects 'looking good' for engineers

People with engineering qualifications have a greater chance of gaining employment in the coming months as sector organisations are currently on the lookout for people with the skills to push them forward.

That is the opinion of Kevin Green, chief executive of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, who said that the UK jobs market is currently presenting some excellent opportunities for people with the right qualifications.

He explained: "A priority for government is to ramp up the support and guidance for job-seekers and to raise awareness of these growth areas within our labour market."

Mr Green added that vocations such as IT, particularly with regards to the internet, are also currently searching for the right candidates.

Meanwhile, Gerry McLaughlin, of ITContractor.com, said that people who have taken the time to gain technical qualifications and have a bit of experience in the field have an excellent chance to fill skilled roles at the moment.

Recruiters 'should take advantage of NIC holidays'

Companies in the recruitment sector have been advised to utilise the 'holiday' in paying staff National Insurance Contributions (NICs), outline in the coalition government's June Budget.

Liz Longman, UK director of independent recruiters' network the Employment Agencies Movement, pointed out to the Recruiter that British firms established outside of London, the south-east and east of England can benefit from a £5,000 'holiday' for the first ten employees they hire in their first year.

She explained: "Client businesses setting up will offer more business to the sector. This is a great opportunity for agencies to offer their services to a growing business attracting the right talent."

Ms Longman also told the source that it will present "new opportunities" for recruiters as well as entrepreneurs.

Meanwhile, Adrian Tripp, chief executive of the European Business Awards, and Rosa Wilkinson, managing director of UKTI, recently said that confidence is returning across the business community in the UK and the whole of Europe.

UK firms 'crying out' for skilled workers'

UK companies are desperately in need of employees with technical skills, with people who are qualified for these roles currently in an "excellent position", one expert claims.

Gerry McLaughlin, of ITContractor.com, said that people who have taken the time to gain technical qualifications and have a bit of experience in the field have an excellent chance to fill skilled roles at the moment.

His comments follow the publication of a report by e-skills UK which showed that demand for information and communications technology staff rose five per cent in the first quarter of 2010 to 86,000.

Mr McLaughlin stated: "So, IT will prove to be a lucrative and much safer profession over the next five to ten years. The information age has arrived and those working in IT are in the vanguard of it."

Earlier this week, global analyst Gartner polled 358 organisations in the IT sector and found that the industry is beginning to boost employment levels as confidence returns.

Majority of organisations 'planning to outsource' in 2010

A new report has revealed that the majority of European organisations are planning to outsource more frequently in the coming months.

The research, carried out by global analyst Gartner, reveals that 53 per cent of firms will outsource more in 2010, based on the opinions of decision makers in 206 organisations across the continent.

Claudio Da Rold, vice president at Gartner, said that firms are beginning to increase expenditure as they shrug off the effects of the economic downturn and managers become more confident.

"Although we conducted this survey in the first quarter of 2010, before the start of the Greek financial crisis, we believe that the cautious expectation of growth will continue in Europe beyond 2010," he explained.

It comes after a survey carried out by EEF, the manufacturers' organisation, showed that UK firms are continuing to report buoyant trading conditions as a result of rising demand in overseas markets, which points to positive growth prospects in 2010.

Demand for financial services jobs 'on the rise'

There has been a rise in demand for jobs in the financial services sector in recent months, with small and medium-sized businesses especially optimistic about their prospects for the rest of 2010, it has been claimed.

A new survey among financial services firms carried out by Reed shows that demand for new staff remained steady among most companies in August and even increased in some organisations, despite the summer usually being a quiet time for recruitment in the sector.

Martin Warnes, the managing director of Reed, said the figures are "quietly encouraging" for the economy as a whole, particularly as 49 per cent of firms say they will be employing new staff by the end of 2010.

"It seems that overall confidence, particularly in the services sector, has been slowly but steadily building over the summer," he added.

Recently, accountancy body ICAEW and accountants Grant Thornton compiled a study for the second quarter of 2010 which revealed UK financial services firms are expecting to employ a greater number of workers in the coming months.

IT sector 'on the road to recovery'

The IT industry is beginning to boost employment levels as confidence returns to the sector, it has been claimed.

Global IT industry analyst Gartner polled 358 organisations in the sector and found that the median rate of increase in IT headcounts was 6.3 per cent across all respondents in the last 12 months.

Diane Berry, managing vice president at Gartner, said that as more companies resume hiring, employees will re-evaluate their current job situation and "contemplate and entertain" external opportunities.

She added: "Retention efforts at this time should be focused on identifying the profile of workforce you can't afford to lose, understanding what will keep them engaged and motivated, and addressing any potential issues."

Last month, Steve Huxham, chairman of the Recruitment Society, said that many staff are considering switching careers at the moment in order to take advantage of more buoyant jobs markets in other sectors.

Manufacturing confidence 'translating into recruitment'

There is greater confidence in the manufacturing sector as orders begin to pick up and this is translating into increased recruitment, according to the latest report.

A survey carried out by EEF, the manufacturers' organisation, shows that UK firms are continuing to report buoyant trading conditions as a result of rising demand in overseas markets, which points to positive growth prospects in 2010.

Additionally, greater confidence across the sector is leading to the creation of more jobs as organisations point towards growth in the coming months.

Commenting on the findings, EEF chief economist Lee Hopley said manufacturers have continued to "reap the rewards" of growth in overseas markets, with the upswing being felt across all sectors and regions.

"Not only has this continued to translate into better employment prospects but the recovery in investment has begun much earlier in the cycle than after previous recessions," the expert explained.

It comes after Rosa Wilkinson, managing director of UKTI, recently said that there is not only a return to confidence across the business community in the UK, but across the whole of Europe.

Jobs market 'facing demand from military personnel'

The jobs market is facing demand from military personnel as people leave the armed forces and take on civilian roles such as a sales engineer, it has been claimed.

A new report by Leicester-based Gemini Forces shows that the organisation is anticipating a "surge" in the numbers of military personnel leaving the forces and entering the civilian jobs market after rumours that several British Army regiments could be facing the axe over defence funding.

According to Harry Dean, Gemini forces director who served in the army for 30 years, said several regiments could "pay the price" when the comprehensive spending review is announced in October.

"This could potentially lead to a huge influx of ex-military personnel looking for jobs in the civilian market," he noted.

According to John Salt, director of Totaljobs.com, it is essential that jobseekers are flexible in their approach to sales recruitment if they are to enhance their prospects of securing a position.

Recruiters move to online and flexible benefit platforms

More companies are applying technology to communicate benefits via an online portal and to administer salary sacrifice and broader flexible benefit arrangements, according to a new report.

The data, published by Mercer, finds that a growing number of companies are planning to introduce "technology platforms" to automate their pension and other salary sacrifice arrangements, while enhancing the communication and flexibility of their benefit programmes.

According to the survey, more than a third of participants said they were planning to introduce technology over the next 12 months, as well as bringing in new salary sacrifice arrangements or streamline existing ones to provide greater benefit choice and improved communication.

Stephen Hempenstall, a principal and consultant at Mercer, commented: "Online benefit platforms can be introduced at much lower cost than in the past and are now affordable to many medium-sized companies. Savings made from salary sacrifice arrangements will often pay for the new benefit technology."

It comes after accountancy body ICAEW and accountants Grant Thornton compiled a study for the second quarter of 2010 which showed that companies are expecting to employ a greater number of workers in the coming months.

Employers 'not managing risks' around staff rewards

Many companies are failing to measure the risks associated with how they reward staff for good performances, and the number is increasing, a new report suggests.

Research carried out by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and published in the report Managing Reward Risks: An Integrated Approach shows that 15 per cent of respondents think that their organisation is poorly prepared to deal with these risks, up from nine per cent in 2009.

Meanwhile, only 15 per cent of employers believe that their organisation is well prepared compared with 17 per cent last year.

Charles Cotton, performance and reward adviser, CIPD, commented: "The past 12 months have been a turbulent time for many employers in terms of pay and benefits practice. They are fearful that the way that reward helps them attract, retain and motivate their employees is no longer appropriate."

In an article published on OnRec.com recently, Alex Pratt, entrepreneur and author of Austerity Business: 39 Tips for Doing More with Less, said that traditional attitudes to sales recruitment need to change to ensure that businesses are operating efficiently.

Investment 'favoured over cost-cutting'

Many global businesses are favouring investment over cost-cutting in order to aid recovery, particularly in the manufacturing sector, a new report has claimed.

According to the study, published by Eversheds, businesses will continue to drive demand and will also have a stronger appetite to invest in three key areas in the near future - staffing levels, marketing activity and research and development projects.

Stephen Sorrell, partner at Eversheds, said that the findings show a very "mixed picture" in terms of confidence levels and the ways in which businesses have tackled the challenging economic climate.

"It's really encouraging to see that the manufacturing industry is among the most optimistic, while the construction sector, which was arguably the hardest hit by the global recession, has a healthy level of optimism in line with the global average," he noted.

'Caution needed' as employment prospects rise

As employment prospects across the UK rise and staff numbers are boosted, one sector body has warned that caution is still needed throughout the labour market.

A new report by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has noted that the economic recovery started in the fourth quarter of 2009, and quarterly growth remained in positive territory in the first two quarters of 2010.

It has led to the organisation forecasting positive UK GDP growth of 1.7 per cent in 2010 and 2.2 per cent in 2011, following a "very large" GDP decline of 4.9 per cent in 2009.

The upward revisions in the growth forecasts largely reflect the "unusually strong growth" registered in the second quarter of 2010, according to the BCC, with temporary factors that will support growth in the near future.

However, the organisation warned: "We expect a sharp slowdown in GDP growth starting in Q1 2011 as VAT increases to 20 per cent and tough spending cuts are implemented over the next few years."

According to the organisation, this is likely to have a knock-on effect on employment opportunities, particularly for full-time positions.

It comes after Steve Ingham, chief executive of analyst Michael Page, said that there has recently been a rise in confidence in the sales recruitment sector.

Jobseekers 'need to be flexible'

It is essential that jobseekers are flexible in their approach to sales recruitment if they are to enhance their prospects of securing a position, it has been claimed.

According to John Salt, director of Totaljobs.com, public sector jobseekers often have a "high level" of transferable skills, but in today's market, this is often not enough.

His comments follow the publication of a report by the organisation which revealed that, of 1,600 public sector jobseekers polled, two-thirds are now willing to take a pay cut to secure a job, compared with only one-fifth supporting the idea in April.

"Jobseekers need to be flexible to secure that next position and it seems that they finally understand this. Those willing to move with the times will find they will reap the benefits in the long term," Mr Salt explained.

Meanwhile, Manpower Inc recently conducted a Talent Shortage Survey of 35,000 employers across 36 countries and found that, as the global recovery gathers pace, cultivating future talent and alleviating the shortage of skilled workers is being viewed as vital to ensure economic growth.

Firms 'not assessing impact' of training

Many firms are failing to assess the impact that training is having on their employees and the organisation as a whole, it has been revealed.

A new report by Hays Senior Finance shows that, while multimillions of pounds are being spent on staff training across the UK, nearly one in seven organisations admit that they have no measurements in place to assess the impact of their programmes.

The survey also showed that coaching is often undertaken without evaluating the return on investment, while two-thirds of businesses fail to use coaching directly to address corporate objectives.

Chris McCarthy, director at Hays Senior Finance, said that in far too many cases companies are leaving it to individuals to set the framework for their own coaching or mentoring, with little or no reference to the business needs.

"They then fail to check the standards of their programmes and show little concern for the outcomes. Support can be extremely effective when a professional starts a new role, but it is essential it is carried out in the right manner," he noted.

Recently, a report issued by the Department for Work and Pensions showed that training is currently being most commonly received by younger people and women, particularly workers in large organisations and those with higher qualifications.
