Vince Cable calls for more female executives

Vince Cable, the UK business secretary, has urged some of the country's top companies to publish data on the number of men and women in senior positions.

He believes that this extra transparency will highlight those firms who are trying hard to combat the gender imbalance and those who actively search for high calibre female candidates.

Speaking at an event at the London Stock Exchange, Dr Cable asked leaders of FTSE 350 companies to build their own infrastructure to develop talented individuals within their organisations and ensure a continued supply of female executives over the long term.

"Headhunters have a crucial role to play in making sure there is a diverse pool of talent for business to choose from," he remarked.

A progress report published last week by Cranfield School of Management revealed that women now account for 17.4 per cent of FTSE 100 and 12.0 per cent of FTSE 250 board positions.
