According to the Institute for Employment Studies, the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics showed that there are more than 500,000 more people in work now than a year ago – and more than half of these are people over the age 50.
Futhermore, the group states that the fastest rate of increase was seen in the over 65 age group.
Jim Hillage, director of research at the Institute for Employment Studies, explained there are a variety of reasons why older staff are continuing to work longer than ever before.
"In some cases employers want to retain their skills and experience and encourage them to stay on," she added.
