Steve Huxham, chairman of the Recruitment Society, said that the industry is currently crying out for sales engineers but some people are either unaware of the opportunities or have not researched the role well enough.
He pointed out that anybody can change careers and benefit significantly, but the key is to first spend time researching the industry to see what is in store and what the role will demand.
"I know for a fact that there are plenty of jobs available with businesses who need engineers – but they are struggling to find that talent. With engineering – is that now a good word to have on your business card again?" he stated.
Mr Huxham added that if the personal investment that people need to make through retraining to be a sales engineer "makes sense", then the career switch is "well worth contemplating".
Recently, research carried out by IntaPeople showed that there is a growing demand for people in the engineering sector and listed it in the top ten most in-demand positions in the first six months of 2010.
