Part-time employment 'gets people back into work'

People who have been unemployed for a period of time may have a better chance of gaining a full-time job by doing part-time work, it has been claimed.

Dave Miller, co-founder of Bikeworks, said that looking outside of graduate recruitment and other traditional avenues can often reveal people who are passionate and capable of doing the job but have been made redundant or suffered unemployment for reasons beyond their control.

His comments follow the publication of figures by the Office for National Statistics, which showed that the number of people in work jumped by 184,000 from April to June, a statistic which included a record number of part-time workers - up 115,000 to 7.84 million.

Mr Miller explained: "We employ lots of part-time staff, including mums, and being able to offer part-time or flexible working is great for any small business, where predicting future growth is not an exact science."
