Steve Huxham, chairman of the Recruitment Society, said that there is always a risk in switching roles or careers, but people ultimately have to "take responsibility" for their own occupations.
His comments follow the publication of the latest Recruitment and Employment Confederation/KPMG report on jobs, which showed further increases in permanent and temporary staff appointments during July.
Mr Huxham explained: "If you believe that lessons have been learned in trying to have a mixed economy rather than the government only focusing on the public sector, then you could reasonably switch careers."
He pointed out that manufacturing is one industry which offers many possibilities for people looking to switch careers, as long as they are aware of the risks of moving from one sector to another.
