Sales recruitment sector sees confidence rise

There has been a rise in confidence in the sales recruitment sector, according to the latest industry-wide report.

According to analyst Michael Page, confidence is "creeping back" into the jobs market.

Steve Ingham, chief executive of the firm, said the strong performance is down to an increase in permanent job vacancies, as well as "rapid growth" in emerging markets such as China and South America.

He explained that the nature of the industry means that visibility is short and the general level of business confidence and economic activity may be threatened by fiscal consolidation in the UK and Europe.

However, the expert stated: "In the UK, market conditions stabilised in the latter part of 2009 and there was growing evidence of a gradual recovery in the first half of 2010."

Last week, Adrian Tripp, chief executive of the European Business Awards, and Rosa Wilkinson, managing director of UKTI, said that there is not only a return to confidence across the business community in the UK, but across the whole of Europe.

'Confidence returning' among UK businesses

UK businesses are increasingly gaining confidence, with greater optimism among the country's firms regarding the coming weeks, two experts have claimed.

Adrian Tripp, chief executive of the European Business Awards, and Rosa Wilkinson, managing director of UKTI, said that there is not only a return to confidence across the business community in the UK, but across the whole of Europe.

The specialists said that, as businesses "wake up" to new opportunities around the world and begin to seize them, their outlook is increasingly positive.

Their comments follow the release of a study published at by the European Business Awards, which showed that four out of five companies are predicting growth over the next year.

"It's the business community that creates wealth in Europe, so we need to make sure we encourage and recognise those that are doing well, with the idea being that we can share that knowledge with other people," the experts explained.

Skills gaps 'need to be plugged'

National bodies must work together to ensure the country's skills gaps are plugged and sales recruitment numbers increase.

That is the opinion of Manpower Inc, which has conducted a Talent Shortage Survey of 35,000 employers across 36 countries and territories, which showed that skilled trades positions are the hardest to fill.

Jeffery Joerres, Manpower Inc chairman and chief executive of the organisation, said that as the global recovery gathers pace, cultivating future talent and alleviating the shortage of skilled workers is becoming vital to ensure economic growth.

"Countries should be developing policies which facilitate positive migration to fuel economic growth through providing skilled workers where they are needed, rather than creating barriers," he suggested.

It comes after Brendan Barber, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), said the latest employment figures are good news for people seeking sales jobs and other roles and suggested that the UK economy is getting back on its feet.

The data, issued by the Office for National Statistics, showed that overall employment has risen by 184,000.

Working abroad 'can enhance a CV'

Graduates looking to enhance their CV may find that working abroad is the key, it has been claimed.

A new report by the BBC has stated that hundreds of graduates are travelling to China this year in order to take part in paid or volunteering work which they believe will enhance their CV and future prospects of employment.

Joanna Page, who graduated last month with a 2:1 in accountancy and finance from Sheffield University, said that anything other than a First is not enough for many recruiters, so it is important to have a diverse CV which showcases life experiences.

"Employers will see that I can throw myself into new situations and am not afraid of a challenge. It's a long way from home and it's not been cheap, but I think it's an investment in my future and it's worth it," she told the news provider.

Recently, advice was issued by Chris Rea, business manager at Graduate Prospects, said that many people make the mistake of including an irrelevant CV with their job application, even though a little time spent tailoring a resume could go a long way.

Graduates 'examining skills shortages' to boost job chances

Graduates are increasing their chance of sales recruitment by focusing on sectors with skills shortages and gearing their applications towards them, it has been claimed.

Gerwyn Davies, public policy adviser at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), said that whereas previously many graduates acted as if their work was done, the emphasis will now be on lifelong learning and continually updating skills to broaden their range.

"We won't see a vast improvement in the employment situation for a while, so school leavers and graduates would do well to take a look at where the skills shortages are, because they still exist in some of the key areas," he noted.

Mr Davies' comments follow the latest CIPD/KPMG labour market outlook survey, which noted that the improvement in the labour market in recent months has contributed to a "modest increase" in the proportion of employers reporting hard to fill vacancies.

HR departments 'employing specialist brand managers'

HR departments are increasingly employing specialist managers to run employer brand projects, new research into industry recruitment trends has claimed.

A poll carried out by specialist consultancy People in Business for its Employer Brand Benchmark Survey found that organisations are increasingly competing for talent, with the proportion of employer brand managers and talent managers increasing from ten per cent to 28 per cent in the last four years.

Sophy Pern, director of People in Business, said that developing and harnessing the power of the employer brand "helps bring focus to people management", which is enabling companies to get more with less.

"As the importance of having and managing an employer brand is increasingly recognised and its contribution is moving up the company agenda, we’re seeing an increase in senior management and specialist involvement," she explained.

Recently, a job market trends report issued by the Department for Work and Pensions found that training is being most commonly received by younger people and women, particularly workers in large organisations and those with higher qualifications.

Communication 'critical' for sales managers

It is essential that sales managers focus on communication if they are to boost employee motivation, one sector body has noted.

Petra Wilton, director of policy and research at the Chartered Management Institute, said that employee engagement can be the key to productivity and sales managers are often given the task of ensuring staff are suitably motivated.

His comments follow the release of a report by Aviva, which showed that many employees "suffer in silence" rather than admit health concerns to their boss, with only four per cent of workers approaching their manager about a problem.

"Certainly there are a range of different interventions that you can do to try and rebuild the communications and employee moral across the company - away days, business planning or strategy days," Ms Wilton suggested.

She added that sales managers who create a sense of community can benefit from increased output and more positive attitudes, which will boost the organisation as a whole.

Recession and unemployment rise 'is good for sales recruitment'

The country's economic downturn and resulting rise in unemployment may turn out to be a positive thing for sales recruitments organisations, it has been claimed.

According to Saffron, recruitment organisations are experiencing a growth in demand for e-learning services in a "flooded market" as people seek to move back into sales jobs and positions in other sectors.

However, the organisation said that companies face being "left behind" unless they can meet the training challenges created by different market conditions, with recruiters needing to improve their ability to pick and prepare the best candidates and win new business.

Matt Trott, director and co-founder of Recruitment Juice, added that giving recruiters the ability to upload their own training material can be a "huge benefit" to firms.

It comes after a study by accountancy body ICAEW and accountants Grant Thornton revealed that UK companies are expecting to employ a greater number of workers in the coming months, with those in sales jobs and other sectors also likely to receive pay rise.

School leavers 'heading into financial services'

As the competition for university places continues to intensify, many school leavers are turning their back on a degree and are instead moving into a career in financial services straight after leaving school, it has been claimed.

Tim Vye, divisional director of Reed Finance, said that this trend will "undoubtedly" have an impact on the workforce of the future and employers need to understand how it could impact on their recruitment processes and avoid only opting for students who have a university education.

"We believe that this degree bias will change as employers increasingly see talented new accountants following different entry routes into the accountancy profession," he explained.

Mr Vye added that, if an accountant can "successfully navigate" the early years of their career, they will often find that having a degree becomes less of an issue for them in the future.

It comes after Carl Gilleard, chief executive of the Association of Graduate Recruiters, said that graduate sales recruits are unlikely to be penalised for taking a year out from studies, and many may benefit from doing so.

As a recruitment provider to many of the UK’s major banks, mortgage lenders and building societies Aaron Wallis have a deserved reputation within Financial Services recruitment. Their dedicated FS consultants recruit sales professionals across Retail Banking and Financial Services including IFA’s and Mortgage Broking.

Businesses 'expecting greater recruitment numbers'

UK companies are expecting to employ a greater number of workers in the coming months, with those in sales jobs and other sectors also likely to receive pay rise, according to the latest report.

Accountancy body ICAEW and accountants Grant Thornton have compiled a study for the second quarter of 2010 which reveals that companies have experienced their lowest fall in staff numbers since the beginning of last year.

In addition, firms expect the number of people they employ to increase by 1.1 per cent during the next year, with salary growth for those in sales jobs and other sectors expected to be approximately 1.5 per cent during the next 12 months.

Scott Barnes, chief executive of Grant Thornton, commented: "Clearly economic conditions remain tough but there are signs that some companies are looking to switch from short-term survival measures to opportunities for growth."

Meanwhile, in a recent article published on OnRec.com, Alex Pratt, entrepreneur and author of Austerity Business: 39 Tips for Doing More with Less, said that traditional attitudes to sales recruitment need to change to ensure that businesses are operating efficiently.

Expert reveals 'smart moves and mistakes' for sales jobs recruits

An industry expert has touched upon some of the biggest mistakes and smartest moves that sales jobs candidates can make during the application and interview process.

Renowned author and career columnist Alexandra Levit said that a mistake many people make is failing to use social networking sites effectively, with some candidates creating "information overload" by creating a presence on too many websites.

She added that many candidates often make the error of studying current jobs market trends rather than looking at the bigger picture.

Ms Levit explained that the long-term employment trends will give an indication of which sector they should be applying for: "Understand where the job opportunities are and will be by looking at statistics and broad trends."

Meanwhile, Mat Armstrong, writing for Human Resource Magazine, recently said that the same advice applies to recruiters – that all sales jobs candidates need to be checked out before being hired.

Aaron Wallis offer hundreds of sales jobs together with some of the most comprehensive sales tips and career advice available to UK sales jobseekers. Achieve the sales career you deserve.

Businesses 'must address staffing issues'

Businesses need to address staffing issues if they are to survive the "austerity cuts" facing the UK, one expert has noted.

In an article published on OnRec.com, Alex Pratt, entrepreneur and author of Austerity Business: 39 Tips for Doing More with Less, said that traditional attitudes to sales recruitment need to change to ensure that businesses are operating efficiently.

He noted that many managers often think that "one size fits all", but this is never usually the case and is an important aspect which needs to be addressed but rarely is.

"Getting the most out of people is about inherent fairness, mutual respect and flexibility on both sides but we need to be aware that actions speak louder than words," Mr Pratt explained.

Recently, Tina Lamb, senior partner at development organisation the Impact Factory, said that there is currently a culture of people becoming "accidental managers" without having the necessary skills to organise and lead their team, and this needs to be addressed.

Government green deal 'may boost construction employment'

The coalition government's 'green deal' plan is likely to boost the number of construction jobs in the coming months, one sector expert has stated.

Brian Berry, director of external affairs at the Federation of Master Builders, said that the industry is waiting to hear more details about the scheme, but it is likely to see the retrofit of 26 million homes.

His comments follow a report published by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, which suggested that some sectors of the construction industry experienced a drop in workloads in the second quarter of the year, although private commercial and residential were both broadly unchanged.

"This could potentially offer big job opportunities for builders who can retrofit existing properties. That is a possible ray of light at the end of the tunnel," he explained.

Mr Berry added that the sector needs to persuade the government that the construction industry is essential in terms of getting the British economy back on its feet because of the amount of people that it employs and its contribution to GDP.

The Aaron Wallis Construction and M&E sales team offer many construction sales jobs across the sector. For employers Aaron Wallis offer a construction sales recruitment service that offers 12 month rebate and psychometric profiling within a single fixed recruitment price.

Employee engagement 'must be tackled'

It is essential to tackle employee engagement if companies are to ensure the satisfaction of their staff and boost their loyalty to the company, one sector body has observed.

According to the quarterly Employee Outlook survey from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), overall, job satisfaction remains low and has decreased by one per cent since the last quarter and substantially since spring 2009.

As with previous quarters, men continue to be less satisfied with their jobs than women, with many considering a switch to a different position or sector.

Mike Petrook, head of public affairs at the CIPD, said the main issue is that people are struggling because they are overworked due to lack of resources.

"To help this employee engagement must be tackled. What we would say is the way to do this is for employers to better communicate. Let people know what is happening - before workers read about in the press," he advised.

Insurance sector sees job demand boost in July

There was a rise in the number of jobs available in the insurance sector in July, according to a new industry report, which is sure to boost sales recruitment hopes.

The Reed Job Index shows that employer demand across all sectors fell marginally last month, but certain sectors enjoyed strong growth, with the number of vacancies in the insurance and accounting industries rising substantially.

Martin Warnes, managing director of reed.co.uk, said employers are still a little nervous about how sustainable economic recovery will prove to be.

"At the same time however, some key job sectors bucked the trend, with demand for new staff in these areas rising to their highest level since the index began," he explained.

Last week, research carried out by Morgan McKinley suggested that half of hiring managers in the capital's financial services sector will be upping their recruitment drives in the second half of 2010 as the fallout of the economic downturn begins to dissipate.

Insurers 'are protecting motorists'

The work done by people in insurance sales jobs is helping to protect motorists from fraudsters, one industry body has noted.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive for BIBA, said that insurance is fair to people and "very specific to the individual", so each policy taken out is helping to give an accurate estimate of risk.

His comments followed the publication of the AA British Insurance Premium Index, which showed that fraud is leading to car insurance premiums being pushed up at their fastest-ever rate due to bogus claims.

Mr Trudgill said that those in insurance sales jobs are nevertheless doing their best to ensue that people receive the lowest possible premium for their policy.

He advised: "Don't just stick to comparison sites because they have only a limited amount of the market. Through a broker you can be advised more about what is the cheapest but also most suitable."

DWP report examines sales recruitment training trends

A new report issued by the Department for Work and Pension (DWP) has examined the training trends currently being seen in sales recruitment.

According to the study, training is being most commonly received by younger people and women, particularly workers in large organisations and those with higher qualifications.

The report also showed that training also seems to be more prevalent among higher earners, namely those in the top quintile, and staff who are relatively new to the job, which the DWP claims is linked to the provision of induction.

According to the department: "The report does find a small effect on wages of undergoing training, and also increases in the rate of retention and moving into paid work. However, the incidence of training appears to be falling, except among older workers."

Earlier this year, a study carried out by Citrix found that 88 per cent of employers believe on-the-job training is of significant importance to their organisation's wellbeing.

Part-time employment 'gets people back into work'

People who have been unemployed for a period of time may have a better chance of gaining a full-time job by doing part-time work, it has been claimed.

Dave Miller, co-founder of Bikeworks, said that looking outside of graduate recruitment and other traditional avenues can often reveal people who are passionate and capable of doing the job but have been made redundant or suffered unemployment for reasons beyond their control.

His comments follow the publication of figures by the Office for National Statistics, which showed that the number of people in work jumped by 184,000 from April to June, a statistic which included a record number of part-time workers - up 115,000 to 7.84 million.

Mr Miller explained: "We employ lots of part-time staff, including mums, and being able to offer part-time or flexible working is great for any small business, where predicting future growth is not an exact science."

A switch to sales engineer 'could be a good move'

Making a career switch to a sales engineer could be a positive move as long as people research the sector before changing, one expert has claimed.

Steve Huxham, chairman of the Recruitment Society, said that the industry is currently crying out for sales engineers but some people are either unaware of the opportunities or have not researched the role well enough.

He pointed out that anybody can change careers and benefit significantly, but the key is to first spend time researching the industry to see what is in store and what the role will demand.

"I know for a fact that there are plenty of jobs available with businesses who need engineers – but they are struggling to find that talent. With engineering – is that now a good word to have on your business card again?" he stated.

Mr Huxham added that if the personal investment that people need to make through retraining to be a sales engineer "makes sense", then the career switch is "well worth contemplating".

Recently, research carried out by IntaPeople showed that there is a growing demand for people in the engineering sector and listed it in the top ten most in-demand positions in the first six months of 2010.

With extensive experience in technical sales recruitment Aaron Wallis offer a wide range of sales engineer jobs across engineering, manufacturing, industrial, construction, electronics, scientific and M&E. BCC hails 'positive' govt impact in first 90 days

The British Chambers of Commerce has hailed the impact which the new coalition government has had on the UK since coming to power 90 days ago, stating that the work done so far has largely benefitted those in sales recruitment and other sectors.

Ahead of the May's general election, the BBC had set out a 12-point plan for the new administration to attempt to meet in order to stabilise the economy and, so far, the coalition has met three of these criteria.

David Frost, director general of the BCC, noted that the new government has published a "credible plan" to reduce the budget deficit and restore confidence, freeze the public sector wage bill and reform public pensions and begin a systematic review of existing regulation affecting employers in the sales recruitment industry as well as other sectors.

He explained: "This review shows real, balanced progress against nine of our twelve core objectives, so the coalition's overall progress after 90 days has been encouraging."

The government's latest move to impact sales recruitment organisations has been the announcement of a new set of 'time to train' regulations, which will give new sales recruits the right to request training time when they begin a new job.

Skills shortages 'hampering marketing efforts'

A shortage of skills in the marketing sector is preventing many firms from expanding following the economic downturn, a new report has revealed.

Research carried out by Accenture for a study entitled Onward and Up - How Marketers Are Refocusing the Front Office for Growth, found that executives are blaming the lack of expansion on not having staff who are equipped with the tools to drive their firms forward.

To achieve their growth objectives, the majority of marketers said that mastering customer analytics, offering innovation and improving customer engagement and marketing operations should be the key aims.

Dave Rich, managing director of Accenture Customer Relationship Management consulting group and Accenture Analytics, commented: "The insights that can be gained from the data will help marketers identify what customers want and predict how they need to act differently to help steer corporate innovation that can drive improved business outcomes."

Marketing 'a key factor' in escaping the recession

Companies struggling to escape the effects of the recession should place a key focus on their marketing strategy in order to boost revenue, one expert has said.

Tim Campbell, founder of the Bright Ideas Trust and a former winner of The Apprentice, pointed out that smaller firms in particular cannot afford to wait for the economic situation to resolve itself and instead have to be proactive in their approach.

He advised firms to focus on their marketing strategy, with any recruitment in that area conducted with a view to getting the most out of their employees.

"Particularly now that times are harder, a big thing is marketing and using all the tools that are available at your disposal to market," Mr Campbell explained.

His comments follow the publication of a report by the government's Insolvency Service last week, which showed that there has been a 19.1 per cent fall in company liquidations compared with last year.

World of employment 'will undergo major changes' by 2020

The world of work as we currently know it will undergo ten major changes in the coming decade, according to the latest report.

A study carried out by industry analyst Gartner shows that organisations will need to plan for "increasingly chaotic environments" out of their direct control, as trends such as the 'de-routinisation of work' and 'work swarms' occur.

According to the organisation, work swarms occur when companies use every available person to focus on a task, and are likely to be far more prevalent in 2020 as firms look for cost-effective strategies.

Gartner added that the concept of 'my place' will also come to the fore in the workplace - which is the idea that the lines between personal, professional, social and family matters, along with organisation subjects, will disappear.

The research follows a study by Association of Professional Staffing Companies which showed that almost a third of recruiters intend to expand overseas in the next 12 months.

Engineers 'in demand' in 2010

There is a huge demand for people in roles such as sales engineers in 2010, according to a new report.

Research carried out by IntaPeople showed that there is a growing demand for people in the engineering sector and listed the top ten most in demand positions in the first six months of 2010.

Buyers and cost engineers, supply chain consultants and planning engineers all featured on the list, which shows that the sector is bucking the trend seen in many other industries following the recession, said Chris Day, head of IntaPeople's engineering division.

"Despite some difficult conditions, organisations across the country have continued to recruit highly talented engineers as they look to deliver innovative, market-leading solutions," he explained.

Mr Day added that the growing demand for logistical experts also coincides with the launch of a number of "exciting new projects" around the country.

It comes after Steve Huxham, chairman of the Recruitment Society, suggested that many staff may be looking to make the switch to other sectors, such as engineering, to take advantage of more buoyant job markets.

With extensive experience in technical sales recruitment Aaron Wallis offer a wide range of sales engineer jobs across engineering, manufacturing, industrial, construction, electronics, scientific and M&E. Employees 'considering career switches' in the near future

Many staff are considering switching careers at the moment in order to take advantage of more buoyant jobs markets in other sectors, it has been claimed.

Steve Huxham, chairman of the Recruitment Society, said that there is always a risk in switching roles or careers, but people ultimately have to "take responsibility" for their own occupations.

His comments follow the publication of the latest Recruitment and Employment Confederation/KPMG report on jobs, which showed further increases in permanent and temporary staff appointments during July.

Mr Huxham explained: "If you believe that lessons have been learned in trying to have a mixed economy rather than the government only focusing on the public sector, then you could reasonably switch careers."

He pointed out that manufacturing is one industry which offers many possibilities for people looking to switch careers, as long as they are aware of the risks of moving from one sector to another.

Aaron Wallis have a technical sales division with experienced engineering, industrial and manufacturing recruitment consultants. For industrial sales recruitment solutions Aaron Wallis offer employers a unique recruitment service backed by a 52 week rebate period.

Looks 'a key factor' when it comes to recruitment

A person's appearance often plays a key role when it comes to being hired for a particular job, a new survey has found.

Research carried out by experts at the University of Colorado Denver Business School, shows that female applicants often have an advantage when it comes to their chances of successful sales recruitment if they are attractive.

However, where supposedly 'masculine' jobs such as mechanical engineer are concerned, good looks can be detrimental.

Professor Stefanie Johnson, assistant professor of management at the university, commented: "In two studies, we found that attractiveness is beneficial for men and women applying for most jobs, in terms of ratings of employment suitability. However, attractiveness was more beneficial for women applying for feminine sex-typed jobs than masculine sex-typed jobs."

It comes after Jerri Barrett, vice president of marketing for Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology, said that there are currently not enough women in technical roles such as IT, which is often due to the small percentage of female students in college classes.

Work experience 'can inspire sales recruitment success'

Giving prospective employees a taste of work experience can light the spark needed to fire them to sales recruitment success, one expert has claimed.

As well as a means of skill testing, Christine Hodgson, writing for Human Resources Magazine, pointed out that an "inspirational" work experience can often help to fire a person's desire for an industry they had never considered.

She noted that work experience is not necessarily only or young people, as older and experienced workers can often be enlightened as to the mechanisms of an unfamiliar sector and consider a switch.

"Such positive experiences of work demonstrate to young people that there are many paths to success, enhancing their life and career aspirations. Crucially for businesses and organisations under efficiency pressures, such initiatives can deliver tangible benefits," Ms Hodgson explained.

Meanwhile, when firms do decide to take on a member of staff, Mat Armstrong, also writing for Human Resource Magazine, said it is essential that recruiters carry out background checks on the individual.

Aaron Wallis offer a Skills Testing service to employers overseen by British Psychological Society (BPS) level B accredited staff. Offering a wide range of skills testing services including psychometrics, ability testing and aptitude tests you can rest assured that Aaron Wallis can offer the right solution for you.

Govt unveils 'time to train' regulations

The government has announced a new set of regulations which will give new sales recruits the right to request training time when they begin a new job.

From April 6th next year, any new worker in any company of any size will be bale to request time to train and study for their new role.

Currently, only workers in firms with more than 250 people are given this right and some experts have questioned the impact that this legislation is likely to have on smaller business.

Sylvia Constantine, IBA Start up Business Adviser of the Year 2005, said that sometimes if a small business trains somebody, they fear that the individual will leave for a better job once they are highly skilled.

She explained: "It is a genuine concern that small businesses have got. The problem is that one employee, when you are a small business, is a larger proportion when compared to large businesses - it has a much bigger impact."

TUC: Employment figures 'encouraging' for sales jobs

The latest employment figures are good news for people seeking sales jobs and other roles and suggest that the UK economy is getting back on its feet, one industry organisation has claimed.

Brendan Barber, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), was commenting on the figures issued by the Office for National Statistics, which suggested that overall employment has risen by 184,000.

"These encouraging figures reflect the UK's mini economic revival in the first half of 2010 before the government's cuts kicked in," he explained.

However, Mr Barber noted that there are "strong warning signs" in the figures, suggesting that the number of older people in employment fell slightly - something he says needs to be addressed by the coalition government sooner rather than later.

He added: "With the government pressing ahead with deep spending cuts, this could be the last we see of an economic revival for some time."

CVs 'must be relevant' to application

Sales recruitment candidates must ensure that their CV is relevant to the role they are applying for, according to one expert.

Chris Rea, business manager at Graduate Prospects, said that many people make the mistake of including an irrelevant CV with their job application, even though a little time spent tailoring a resume could go a long way.

His comments follow the publication of a survey by Unison, which showed that careers services for young people in England are being slashed by up to 50 per cent.

Mr Rea said that this highlights the importance of ensuring that all applications and CVs complement each other and give the best possible impression of a sales recruitment candidate.

"Advisers and experts always say that preparation is key to a successful application. You don't need to guess about this; you should have a copy of the job description and person specification in front of you when making an application," he said.

Offer Letters To Sales Employees – What Should They Include?

So you have found the perfect candidate for your sales vacancy. You were impressed enough to invite them to a face-to-face interview. You got to know them in the first round, grilled them in the second round and they’ve impressed everyone that they’ve met along the interview path. So, it’s time to offer them that all important job but you’re not sure on how to construct the offer letter.

A job offer letter confirms the details of an offer of employment and should try to contain the right mix of friendliness, optimism and of course disclaimers. It should further include details such as job description, reporting relationship, salary, bonus potential, benefits, vacation allowance, probation period, start date, notice period and more. The letter generally confirms the terms that the employer and the sales candidate (or via the sales recruitment agency) has negotiated and agreed for the candidate’s employment.

The job offer letter can be sent via email through conventional practise is to send by email and then follow this with a copy in the form of a letter via ‘snail mail’. Do ensure that you can confirm what you offered verbally in writing to ensure there are no unfortunate misunderstandings in the first few weeks of your new employee’s service.

Do make certain that you include as many details as possibly within the job offer letter – these can be as attachments or enclosures so the candidate has enough helpful information that will aid in helping them make an informed decision. It must never be forgotten that the candidate might receive other job offers (lucky them!) therefore you may be competing for their attention and employment.

Commonly, the candidate would have indicated if he or she will accept the position, under the stated terms (prior to the drafting of the letter) through a ‘verbal offer’ this will be done either directly or through your agency. Do regard the verbal acceptance as tentative until the offer letter, and the confidentiality agreement, if you use one, are signed. Your offer letter should be signed by the hiring manager, HR or a company director (or in some cases two or more of those detailed).

Decisions, Decisions When Writing A Job Offer Letter

No one resigns from their job until they have an offer of employment in writing (unless there are external factors such as redundancies). If you leave it too long before contacting the chosen candidate – your silence may act as a ‘no thanks’. It is suggested that a job offer in writing should be sent within 24 hours of the interview – worst case scenario would be 72 hours.

A punctual arrival of a job offer letter is a fantastic indication to a sales professional that you are decisive, keen and genuinely serious about the individual joining your team. Although none of these may be true – a delayed offer can suggest loss of interest, lack of urgency or simply poor organisation or a bureaucratic infrastructure where nobody takes responsibility!

If your communication is not clear, assumptions will invariably be made which much ultimately affect how the job seeker feels about the job which could potentially change their mind not only about the job but also your company.

Instructions On How To Write An Offering Letter

· Use a professional offer letter template as your starting point. These can be found online or through the Microsoft Office Word Template site. Remember to fill in the date, name and address as formatted in the template and adjust accordingly (usually the templates need anglicising!)

· Open with your intention to hire the candidate. Clearly state the title of the position that you’re offering and who they will report to (direct line manager)

· Continue by listing the basic bullet points of the duties that the candidate will complete while holding this job (and perhaps attach the job specification as an addendum)

· S-p-e-l-l out the pay rate and benefits of the package for the sales candidate. You must give an accurate salary number in the body of a job offer letter and to avoid confusion at a later date it is worth detailing the commission scheme if applicable.

· State the probationary period with the length and appraisal update milestones

· Explain that the offer is subject to references. Further clarify that if at any time prior to the new recruit joining you receive any reference or report that you consider to be unsatisfactory, make clear that you reserve the right to withdraw the offer of employment.

· If applicable clarify that the offer is subject to a satisfactory Criminal Records Bureau check or medical.

· Give further information about the benefits package – this should include annual leave and could include your health insurance, life assurance and retirement plans

· End with a space ............................. for the person to sign. You’ll want the candidate to sign the job offer letter and return it to you for their HR file.

· Continue to explain that you hope ‘Mr X’ will accept your offer and ask them to confirm their acceptance by a deadline date. You can further mention that if you do not hear back from them by the deadline date that the offer will be automatically withdrawn

· Finish with a personal note for example ‘We are looking forward to you joining us and wish you every success in your new role with us’

· Remember there is often no need to draw up a job offer letter until you have received verbal acceptance from the candidate – this will save time and effort on your behalf.

· Ensure that both parties have a copy of the job offer letter with both signatures. Your chosen candidate will want to save it for personal references and in the case of any discrepancies with his or her salary/benefits package.

Conclusion

Never run the risk of failing to send something as simple as a well written offer letter with full and correct details. Job offer delay can potentially spoil what could be a very smooth recruitment process and your chances of the right person joining your team.

Once you deal has been done – don’t forget to enjoy your good earned fortune in securing the right candidate!

It could be valuable to have an experienced legal or HR advisor to help in constructing an offer Letter and employment contract. We advice seeking advice in constructing all Employment Contract Agreements – most trade bodies will help you with this very cost effectively and it should cost more than ‘tens of pounds’ to purchase a current and relevant template which you adjust accordingly.
