According to a new report published by PCI Films, production grew by 5.1 per cent in 2011 to reach a value of £9.3 billion.
Volume growth in European consumption was also up by almost two per cent, showing that flexible packaging is not struggling like some sectors amid the global financial woes.
Indeed, many firms are having to concentrate more carefully on their packaging in order to both beat the competition and meet sustainability targets.
Sneh Shah from Avery Dennison recently told Food Manufacturing that food safety and protection, innovation and value all have to be considered when coming up with designs, with successful firms able to manage the changes while continuing to display their brand's message clearly.
PCI Films report author Paul Gastor said the flexible packaging market growth was also supported by rising prices for inks, glues and energy.
